When I was in college I was always in need of some extra cash. I ended up doing some really gross jobs like waiting tables, factory jobs and even a stint at our local fast food joint. Needless to say I was miserable getting minimum wage for hard work.

Luckily with the internet is growing by leaps and bounds today's college students have more options. One of the best options to earn extra money is Squidoo.com . Squidoo is a recommendation web site where you can build unique web pages called lenses on things that you are passionate about...like the latest movies, world history, Anime or even your class projects!

Building a lens is fun, easy and most of all FREE. Having worked in financial aid at a local college I know how much college students can use some extra cash. You can even choose to donate some of the royalties you make to charity, how's that for cool!

So read on to learn more about how you can turn a few extra hours per week into some extra cash for pizza, books or even a new car! I bet that would make mom and dad happy!

  1. Squidoo was founded in 2005 and was live to the world in 2006. The founding team consisted of just four people. In 2009 we're only at 6 full time people.
  2. Squidoo has been reviewed by the New York Times, Mashable, BoingBoing and sites and papers around the world. But the reviews we're most proud of: those from our lensmasters, who talk about Squidoo and their lenses on their blogs.
  3. Many lensmasters earn more than $1,000 a year from Squidoo. Some make $10,000. Others are happy with $40 or $4. Lots give it to charity.
  4. As of Dec 2009: About 800,000 people visit Squidoo (that means your lenses) every day. The more traffic one lens brings in, the greater the chances that visitor will see your lens as well. That means it's good for you when your competition on Squidoo succeeds.

5 ways college students can use Squidoo.

Here are some ideas to get you brain kicking!

  1. Create movie reviews for your Campus Friday Movie Night. Then pass them on to your friends. I'll bet by the end of the semester you're the go to person for movie hits and misses.
  2. Get a group of 10 or 15 people together and have a "lens building party". Pool you earnings and have a year end campus party. Pizza's on Squidoo!
  3. Create a lens for your Sorority Car Wash. Give the date, time, price and other details. It's an instant web page for your event and it's FREE!
  4. Start a book club with SquidLit . Have your group review their favorite books online.
  5. Create a campus newsletter lens showcasing art shows, Theatre productions, and sports scores.
