REVIEW (5 STARS)

"Disturbing and delightful"

Linda Moran

(Author of How to Survive Your Diet and Conquer Your Food Issues Forever and owner of the Diet Survivor's non-dieting Yahoo! Group)

BILLED AS FICTION, this anthology of short stories could not have been made up. The vivid word pictures of neglect, sexual abuse, harsh criticism, emotional torture over her weight, spiritual abuse by the Catholic Church, and more, all are painted with such detail that they could only have come from the heart of the author, Jennifer Semple Siegel.

Any alteration of the details is unknown to the reader, and is only the price of admission to a conspiracy we call the "fictional account," starring "Samantha," the one who is battered about in these stories.

Siegel is stoic and curiously detached from Samantha's life of struggle and strain. She tells Samantha's story as though she were a journalist. This author is only the reporter of the terrible facts.

And that she does well. Siegel delights in the highly descriptive re-telling of her accounts as only a writer can. These anecdotes, even the most sinister of them, are transformed into lovely pieces of writing at the author's hand.

The facts speak for themselves--maybe better. No emotion is necessary. By neither condemning nor condoning anything that happened, the raw details come across most clearly. The author, in this way, manages to do what is not easily done--she normalizes the events as part and parcel of the human condition while never stating it has to be this way.

It is in Siegel's dispassionate account, somewhat ironically, that Samantha touches readers' hearts, especially those who have endured chronic shame.

The stories vary in intensity and evil. Some are a light touch infused with humor. Although I personally like the lighter stories best, I make an exception for what may be my favorite story in this anthology. In this disturbing account of abuse at the hands of a day care worker, the author crafts words of sights and sound and thought that portray in living color an awful beauty.

Samantha's stories are only a reflection of what was and what now is as an adult. The author neither draws grand conclusions nor moralizes; if there's a theme, it's about the generations, the struggles of families, and that life is oh so messy.

I recommend this book for anyone who's had a difficult start in life, was unprotected as a child, or has been abused, or anyone with an interest in mental and emotional health. You'll laugh and cry with Samantha, and, by conspiratorial wink, with Siegel herself. The redemption in this book is in the beauty of the written word itself.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

SAMANTHA ANNE MALLORY, an artist and psychology professor, struggles with weight, abuse, love, marriage, sexuality, the Catholic church, traumatic cultural events, family, passage of time, and death.

A 1990 family reunion awakens the nagging voices of Samantha's relatives, dead and alive. The title story interweaves fat-obsessed letters from an aunt with a grandmother's dire warnings of illicit preteen sexuality.

"Time, An Other," the opening story, describes Samantha's first memory; other stories move backward and forward and forward in time. "The Mission" looks back at Samantha's hippie days in Los Angeles, when, on New Year's Eve 1968, she nearly jumps out of a second-story window to escape a hotel fire that turns out to be only a tear gas attack by the L.A.P.D. "In the Name of God" introduces Samantha to 9/11 New York and her feisty granddaughter Kaitlyn. "Psychedelic Bingo" moves forward to 2035, where teenagers are wired--literally--and Samantha is an elderly woman who wages a generational war with her aging daughter Nicole. "Hurry Up, Please, It's Time" depicts Samantha's increasing obsession with death and dying.

Throughout this collection of 24 stories, this spirited middle-aged overweight woman seeks significant meaning in her life as she faces 40 and beyond.

("Time, An Other," the opening story from the collection, appears on the next four modules)

"Time, An Other" (Short Story)

(Part 1)

I FIRST BECAME AWARE of my fat when I was two. Yes, that awareness came first, that moment when a blob of fat jiggled into memory, unblocking Jungian canals of prehistory.

Nanoseconds after fat-consciousness, I became aware of "I" as one. In an instant, springing from nothing to a wiggling amoeba to a sudden human being sitting on a horse on a merry-go-round.

My breath catching me by surprise, almost as if someone had jumped from behind and frightened me into existence.

Now, what?

Colors, sounds, smells, touch, and taste flooding my body. Feelings-wild and random and terrifying, a sea of voices screaming in tongues, pushing me under.

I can't breathe!

Then, something-someone?-moving through the canals of my brain-organizing, filing, and deleting.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....AIR! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...!

"Time, An Other" (Short Story)

Part 2

I wasn't dizzy as the merry-go-round spun around, my horse pumping up and down, like a wave ebbing and flowing and ebbing and flowing....Carrousel music! David Rose's "The Stripper." Yes, the Da-Da-Dah, DAH, Dah, Da, da! I couldn't have known then. But the memory knows what it knows.

Around and around and around. An other, with red hair and three jiggling chins-a pink amoeba-laughed, leaped onto the carrousel, latched onto a pole, and hopped side-saddle onto a horned horse. The platform sagged and groaned, still whirling around and around. The new presence singing from the gut, its words grooving into memory, "You can't love me, I'm big and fat," to the carrousel music.

The amoeba climbed off the horse, and leaped from the platform, disappearing beyond.

Where are you?

The merry-go-round stationary, the rest of the world spinning out of control. Spiraling outward, a spin-art ménage of people, tents, balloons, vivid colors curving around and around, enfolding me.

More color! Yet that blur was confusing, my world was here, and I was not yet ready for the beyond. Someday, I would find it, my amoeba.

I barely had language, but one word was all I needed:

Why?

The awe of touching my cheek and feeling something elastic, something soft and warm, gently giving way to my fingers, mirroring my touch.

What is it?

(Part 3 continued on next module)

"Time, An Other" (Short Story)

Part 3

My leg. A warm, elastic surface; at my touch, a white circle appeared, for a split instant, as the pink gave way to my finger. A fold, just below the thigh. A curiosity, a place to poke, a place where the skin held the tip of my finger captive. I liked this place, it felt real, somewhere I could hold onto without pinching and hurting, for the flat places of my new self pinched when I tried holding onto them. Comfort.

Another surface, unlike the pink one: my sunsuit, yellow with brown and purple dots, ballooning at the belly. I patted this surface. Different. Indifferent. This place rough, flimsy, cool, not mirroring my touch-no me on me. Yet, a part of me, it too having folds like the ones in my leg.

Very puzzling.

The horse rocked beneath me.

Is this me?

What was me, anyway? Touching the creases in its head, I recoiled: it was inelastic, cool, uncomfortable.

Not me.

Otherness.

(Part 4 continued on next module)

"Time, An Other" (Short Story)

Part 4

An inkling: when I touched some surfaces, they did not feel back, that some surfaces existed independently-I was afraid. Something familiar sitting in a sidecar next to my horse, its hands in its lap, my mother? Black smock, her blunt-cut platinum hair blowing stiffly in the wind.

My eyes bore on her.

One other in an ocean of otherness.

My other, an other who could stand up and walk away. I cried. She cooed; I felt better, but not entirely. A vague fear she might leave me on the horse; I couldn't remember getting on the merry-go-round, I didn't know how to get off.

Mama!

More soothing sounds. Relief. My other wasn't going to leave me. I still longed to know about this other otherness, to know why I was.

I spun around and around and around and around, fat-consciousness coursing through prehistorical tributaries.

Time flows, sparkling diamond specks, hurtling through a time-space continuum...

My other now a certainty.

The last certainty I would ever know.
