European women have known about organic argan oil beauty secrets for some time, but this moroccan cosmetic oil has only recently begun to make waves in the USA thanks to word-of-mouth, as well as the efforts of the Moroccan government to turn it into a global export.

Derived from the nuts of the fruit of the Argania Spinosa tree in Morocco, argan oil (also known as argon, argania, argane oil or oil-argan) comes in two forms: cosmetic and food grade for culinary purposes.

The cosmetic version has been used for centuries by women in Southwestern Morocco to naturally enhance their hair, skin and nails.

Now that you know where argan oil comes from, let's take a look at how it can help you rejuvenate your skin, hair and nails.

ARGAN OIL BENEFITS

Pure argan oil is deemed to be one of the world's richest natural sources of vitamin E, which is a renowned anti-aging and anti-wrinkle ingredient, especially liked for its antioxidant powers.

It also contains 80% essential fatty acids (to help reduce inflammation), as well as squalene (to help keep our skin soft), phytosterols (to help protect collagen) and phenolic compounds (to guard against free radicals).

All these elements combine to offer users a myriad of beauty benefits, including:

  • Softer skin

  • Diminished wrinkles

  • Reduced scarring

  • Balanced sebum production (helps clear acne and monthly blemishes)

  • Relief for eczema and psoriasis (even for babies)

  • Shiny hair

  • Softer cuticles
  • ARGAN OIL PRODUCTS

The top cosmetic and food-grade argan oil products

Organic argan oil, preferably raw, is the best option, in my opinion, but there are also lots of other great argan-based products.

A quick and easy way to ensure you are getting good amounts is to read the label. If argan oil is listed as one of the first ingredients, your money will be well-spent. If it appears as the last ingredient, then it's likely that it is being used in small quantities and you may not see the results you are looking for.

Here are my argan oil reviews and recommendations to help you out. These products are recognized as some of the best in the industry. Following rave reviews in Europe, Kaeline, the below-mentioned spa quality brand, is also being used successfully as a professional argan oil line within the spa industry in the USA.

You can also ingest argan oil for its health benefits. If you do, use food grade argan oil made for culinary use.

    HOW TO USE ARGAN OIL

Tips for using organic argan oil on the face, body, hair and nails

    Face:
If you are using cosmetic grade raw argan oil, you only need to use a few drops for your entire face. A little really does go a long way. You can apply it at night as an intensive moisturizing treatment and/or in the morning as a base for your makeup. The oil penetrates easily, does not leave an oily residue and can even be used around the eye area.

First, cleanse your face using a cleansing agent that is appropriate for your skin type.

Next, use a toner or splash your face with cold water.

Finally, take a few drops of argan oil in the tips of your fingers, rub fingers together gently to warm the oil, then apply to face, including eye area. If time permits, spend a few moments lightly massaging your skin and gently tapping around the eye area to help the argan oil penetrate and give your skin a boost of energy.

    Body:
Simply apply as you would any other lotion or oil after a bath or shower. Allow a few minutes for the argan oil to penetrate before you get dressed or get into bed.

    Nails:
If your nails and cuticles are looking a little worse for wear, simply soak them in a mixture of argan oil and lemon juice for 10 minutes (or even overnight). This will not only soften your cuticles and limit nail breakage but will also give a healthy shine to your nails.

    Hair:
For an intensive hair treatment to improve dry scalp and add shine, apply a generous amount of oil to dry hair, then wrap in a warm towel and leave for 30 minutes. Wash and style as usual. Raw organic argan oil is best for this.

TIP 1: Start by using raw argan oil at night only to see how your skin likes it. You can then progress to twice a day if your skin needs extra hydration or you can simply apply it to dry or wrinkle-prone areas.

TIP 2: Raw argan oil has a distinctive natural odor which may deter more sensitive-nosed people from using it. If that is the case, opt for the aromatherapy version (see above for recommendations).

I just bought an Argan oil but it doesn't smell good at all! It reminds me of manure, or like a barn. Should I go back and complain it is that smell just normal? I miss my rose hip seed oil...

Hi Caroline - I'm sorry you don't like the smell of argan oil in its natural state. I mentioned above that argan oil has a distinctive smell that usually wears off after a while. That's why I recommended a couple of options that have been deodorized so that you don't react. You may want to return the one you purchased (if they allow returns on opened product) and purchase one that clearly states that they have removed the smell or added essential oils. I named a few for you above.

      Hope that helps,
      G

i'm glad to hear about this product. My question is about allergies or reactions to the product. Can people with rosacea use it?

Hi Papier - I suggest you buy argan oil without essential oils added as they may potentially aggravate sensitive skin. I know I don't tolerate essential oils in skin care products that well even though they are natural. Have you heard about the Rosacea Care line of products? http://rosaceacare.com/ I recommended them to my cousin and she said they helped her rosacea immensely.

I love argan oil - discovered it a few years ago in Morocco - my family thought it was weird and wouldn't use the pure oil I brought back with me. A few years later and every product seems to have added it (especially hair products) and my family keep asking me to get it for them!
