Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government

Glenn Beck, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers An Inconvenient Book and Glenn Beck's Common Sense, has stumbled upon the secret formula to winning arguments against people with big mouths but small minds: knowing the facts.

And this book is full of them.

The next time your Idiot Friends tell you how gun control prevents gun violence, you'll tell them all about England's handgun ban (see page 53). When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244. And the next time an idiot tells you that vegetable prices will skyrocket without illegal workers, you'll stop saying "no, they won't" and you'll start saying, "actually, eliminating all illegal labor will cause us to spend just $8 a year more on produce." (See page 139.)

Idiots can't be identified through voting records, they can be found only by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. If you know someone who fits the bill, then Arguing with Idiots will help you silence them once and for all with the ultimate weapon: the truth.

dok300 says:

A fantastic read. Liberals know they don't stand a chance in a debate about the econemy or social rights, so they resort to getting comedians(Jon Stewart) to fight their battles - illustrating how much of a joke their plight is. Glenn Beck, from what i can make out, advocates exactly the same policies as Ron Paul, but no-one seems to be bashing him. Both of them are their own men and they spread the truth regardless of public opinion.

sarah says:

I had to read Arguing with Idiots for a class last semester and it was BRILLANT! It taught alot, as well as made me laugh! Glenn Beck is a great man! His veiws make me think about things and his show is interesting,

Joey McC says:

The reason the Left screeches with such anger over people like Beck is because they simply can't come up with a logical counterpoint to the man; this book is no different. My only complaint: since Beck has compiled such a great repertoire of conservative comebacks here, what will he do when the time for another Arguing with Idiots comes?

Peter F. says:

I agree with alot of the views in this book and I will gladley read it again.

Sierra Roberts says:

ha ha ha someone said watch the "real news" and they wander whats wrong with society today... you just keep on watching your "real news" and all the "truths" they show on there... as far as Im concerned the only thing the "real news" is good for is the weather.. and even thats wrong 70% of the time

Sierra Roberts says:

There are no words to describe how i feel about this book, its inspiring, truthfull, and I love it!! I am 18 years old I used to hate to read, definitly despised the(let me quote Glenn here) "idoits", and lthought our gavernment hated its people and that we were very far from being a free people, but at the same time loved government... the way our founding fathers wanted it to be anyway... After my mother finally talked me into reading this book I have found a new hope in our government, and a sympathy for the ignorant, I am proud to say I am an American and am quite greatfull for my freedoms. Thank you Glenn Beck you have saved me from a life of being a true "Idiot". and I love the expressions of my elders when I put them in check with all of the cold hard facts I learned from this book. Sympathy to those of you still living in the Matrix

Rush Limbaugh says:

I love this book! It's armed me with sufficient knowledge to argue with the biggest idiot of them all: Glenn Beck!

Amonite says:

I am enjoying reading through this book. It has a very unique format, nice presentation, and a variety of ways to present each point. While I dislike the idiot/argument concept, as such presentations can all too easily turn into straw men arguments, for the most part the 'idiot' questions do seem to be questions I have encountered in the real world, and the arguments were applicable solutions rather than just political talk. The book is very light reading and extremely funny, but manages to deal with very critical issues of our time that cannot be ignored.

One reason Glenn Beck is so popular, by the way, is that he encourages people to think for themselves. If one was trying to stupefy fan followers into mindless mimicry, the last thing one would want to do is teach them how to seek out fraud, uncover lies, judge people for character - not status, and stand on their own feet.

Bre says:

Amazing book... Goes over a lot of paths that our government has taken to limit or upsurp our "Rights". Glen has formulated each argument with fact and great illustrations to back it up and help it be understood. The fact that the goverment has taken over our education system, and has so much power over what is taught and not taught our children, is absolutely frightning. The fact that we have the "Right to bear Arms" and defend ourselfs agains a tyranical goverment or criminally minded person that would try to take our rights away, and the government can make is so hard for a citizen to get a gun, where a criminal or a tyrantical goverment could someday have all the power to kill or enslave us, is absolutely unbelievably wrong.

We are a Republic, and we have gone so far from that toward socialism that we will destoy our goverment and our beautifull United States of America. My father and brother served in the military in this country and it is horriable how dishonoring we are to the government that our forfathers established and people like them, and Glen Beck, are simply trying to defend and protect. Glen uses his WORDS, friends....Its called "Freedom of Speach". Listen and please pray, before your freedom is gone.. Amazing book Glen, and I only went over a fraction of the amazing topics you cover. Our family is reading it together.

DontTreadOnMe says:

hey, to all you people in the hate column: just because glenn beck isnt letting the government own him, doesnt mean you can hate him for it. the government is slowly moving towards socialism, and he doenst want any part of it. that why he is speaking out against it. if you stop being a coward, then you'll speak out too.

Adam says:

To everyone in the hate column...read the book then disprove or argue your point on a point by point basis..because "why do most HS dropouts vote republican?" where is that fact? 99% of statistics are made up on the spot. Glenn Beck is a voice that questions everyone and asks why is this this way? He speaks about the things no one else wants to say but everyone is thinking about. Glenn Beck, Bill O' Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh are all different people!!! Yes they are conservatives and their opinions are not bound by the PC society..if listen to PMSNBC all the time yeah you probably think this country is just a bunch of jet set bigots...I say if you want to be a socialist just say you are a socialist and lets have that debate.

EB1985 says:

Im not a big fan of Glen Beck. I agree with a few of his points sometimes but he actually really irritates me and I lump into the 'Loudmouth knowitall" category with Bill Oreilly and Rush Limbaugh. I thought the book was funny, though. I laughed out loud a lot. He has a good sense of humor.

Evil Conservitive 1 says:

God Bless Glenn Beck for at last telling the American people the truth of the evils that our goverment has been trying to put upon us and their vast conspiracy to steal our freedom.

Evil Conservitive 1 says:

Glenn Beck has at last told the American people the truth of our tyrannical goverment. Both Democrats and Republicans are guilty of shredding the Constitution. He blows past the politicly correct and tells of the conspiracy to steal away our rights. God Bless Glenn Beck.

Sally says:

First we listened to the audio version..Fantastic, funny, full of facts. Even our 3 year old grandson could recognize the Idiot and laugh at his stupidity. Next I will read it to let it settle in. This is the best written and illustrated book I have read in a long time and with sloid fact checking.

Hate it!

bptr says:

"Glenn Beck's new book will arm you with facts so that you will be able to defend your conservative beliefs". That line says it all !!!Moron "Conservatives" can't possibly think for themselves so have to parrot the complete lies and stupidity spewed from The Propaganda Channel (Faux News) and the AM radio jerks who let only the callers who agree with their nonsense on the air. The morons who follow Beck are too dumb too see this obvious censorship and, I am sure, are too illiterate to even know the word "faux". At least half the people in this country are deluded idiots. These assholes like Beck just profit off of them.

namealreadytaken says:

Aptly named. I felt like I was arguing with an idiot the entire time.

Dave says:

If you are reading Beck you are already an idiot. Solution ? Stop watching people magazine news and start watching the real news.

RAFE says:

Why is it that the majority of highschool dropouts vote republican? Why do people read this book and rant and rave about what ACORN has done when there was obvious voting fraud in the 2000 election and no one seems to care? And with the conservative view of religion in government, how many people have died in religious wars in our earths history? Are you saying that there should be prayer in school? I say that you are the idiots.

Flynn_the_Cat says:

*sighs* The rest may be accurate, i wouldn't know. By this bit... "When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244"
1. Even I know that it's CANADA's system, the US govt is looking at. The UK one is completely different.
2. Every review and published set of statistics around shows the US pays twice as much per capita for half the result.

So if you're going to use that as part of the book's description, at least provide more context, not just more pointless NHS bashing. Which, oddly, hardly anyone in the UK agrees with.

rd28 says:

glenn beck is not for america the beautiful. he is all about $$$$ -

bloomingrose says:

Glenn Beck uses diatribe and insults to get his point across. He is as far from a real, reasoned debater as you could imagine. I look at his opinions with a jaundiced eye.

Mike says:

Idiot vs teabagger... hmmmmm... I'll take being an "idiot" any day.

Chris says:

As someone once said, "Glenn Beck excels at telling us what people who don't think, think." This book, with it's facile half truths, distortions and lies is a fine example of that.

FactsnotFox says:

Fox news is mainly populated by a bunch of grumpy old conservative pundits co-hosted by cheerleaders in micro minis. Glen Beck is something else though. He employs demagoguery smoothed over with a studied humour. I personally cannot decide if his act is a cynical exploitation of the target audience in the pursuit of ratings or if he is genuine in his beliefs; as he is an ex radio talkback jock and part time stand up comedian I suspect the former.
These news pundits aren't new and in the words of the eminently more quotable George Bernard Shaw "But though there is no difference in this respect between the best demagogue and the worst, both of them having to present their cases equally in terms of melodrama, there is all the difference in the world between the statesman who is humbugging the people into allowing him to do the will of God, in whatever disguise it may come to him, and one who is humbugging them into furthering his personal ambition and the commercial interests of the plutocrats who own the newspapers and support him on reciprocal terms.

Demagoguery: strategy for gaining political power by appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public ? typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist, populist or religious themes.

theDon says:

oh my theoneanonly,

The money comments went over your head, funny how simple statements can be so difficult for some to grasp.

No one opposes Beck because he has money, what people oppose him for is his unscrupulous ways of achieving his wealth. He claims to be libertarian, but I would consider him to be a fallacious one. He has amassed his fortune by taking attractive viewpoints, many of them baseless, and perverting them in a way that attracts uneducated conservatives and polarizes anyone else who may disagree. It really is quite a shrewd business tactic, and for that I give him his due.

To summarize, it is the means to an end, rather than just the end outcome my friend.

Hmm... It seems you don't really need a book to argue with idiots...

theDon says:

Great book for people who need to be spoon fed arguments. He makes claims directed to the simple minds who really can't be bothered to try and learn about the world themselves. He is an amateurish economist who is under the impression that extreme laissez-faire policies are the answer, but sorry to say they are not. Anyways he tries to simplify complicated issues which makes the book appeal to conservatives who can't think for themselves, while making lots of $$$

TEB says:

Beck has been able to manipulate the mindless into believing he has their back. Beck is actually just protecting his wealth and the wealth of his friends through his books and talk shows. He just uses his troops (Listeners) to fight the ultra rich battles for,ie. R Murdock.etc.

Ezra says:

Glen Beck is a man who believes in an angel called Moroni. Do you think he might be a moron.

Readers Review "Arguing With Idiots"

Obviously, readers either love it or hate it. Currently with 165 Amazon readers chiming in, positive reviews outweigh negative almost 2 to 1. Here are a few samples.

5 stars: By ANDREW WHITE "awartworks.com" (Indianapolis, USA) - "Glenn and his staff are brilliant in their handling of current issues - providing citizens of the United States of America with honest and fact based counterpoints for leftist nut-jobs who long for the downfall of capitalism in our great nation (which would also lead to the down fall of our greatness). It is sickening to finally see the true face of the democratic party and how corrupt most politicians are - that they can so blatantly disregard the will of the people by subverting our Constitution every chance they get. I'm glad more of us are waking up and am hopeful that it isn't too late."

5 stars: "Kryptonite for Liberals" By J. Conlon (Louisville, KY) "Just read the negative reviews. The liberals are in full hate mode and for good reason. Anyone that is not an Obama cool-aid drinker will enjoy reading this book. It demolishes the tired old points made by your liberal friends and relatives with facts (The sources were given in the back of the book). If you are like me, there are plenty of idiot quotes in the book that I swear came strait from someone I know. This book will have an affect and could cause Glenn to overtake Rush as the person most hated by liberals."

5 stars: By L. Mattis "Rich Boxer" (USA) - "Great book, exposes liberals, (not very hard) for how foolish and arrogant they really are. I would bet that a majority of the single star reviews, didn't even read the book. Typical liberal, so predictable it's sad. This is a must read book. Very funny and honest"

1 star: By Graeme Buckley (Wellington New Zealand) "While the 1st amendment to the American Constitution (a document that Mr Beck and his ilk appear to have a nodding and rather selective acquaintance with), guarantees Mr Beck the right to spout his views (a tolerance he seems somewhat unlikely to extend to those who disagree with him), no one with any pretence to rational thought could ever agree with this twaddle. Yet another symptom of how the Republicans are becoming the natural party of stupidity. ..."

1 star: By Laura Ann Robertson (South Dakota, US) - "I cannot imagine any publisher being willing to publish a book by a man who in my opinion is a liar and an idiot and has had 60 companies withdraw their advertising from his show. What a waste of paper and trees. He is a disgrace and a shame to the USA. He can't even talk facts only lies. What does this say about the people in this country when they will buy a book written by someone who wouldn't know the truth if it hit him over the head? Don't we have any intelligent Republicans left in this country, like Eisenhower anymore and if so why don't they stand up and speak out.?"

"Hello, you sick, twisted freak. My name is Glenn Beck. I'm glad you're here." Thus begins a typical day on the Glenn Beck Program. His spirited commentary is broadcast to millions of listeners every morning, making him the third-most popular talk radio host in America. He dominates in the realm of cable news as well, where his Fox News show is the third-most watched program. Glenn's detractors assume he is a typical Republican - perhaps a recasting of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. If they listened or watched his show for just 15 minutes, they would quickly realize all their assumptions are wrong. Glenn Beck breaks the mold. He is one of the most unique participants in the political process. Glenn's personal story is remarkable. It includes tragedy at an early age, redemption at the brink of death, and success against all odds. He is an inspiring figure whether one agrees with his politics or not.

That Beck's intention is to shine lights in the dark corners of things that people believe is admirable. That he does it by removing the light from other well-lit corners is foolish. That people read his words is a good thing. That they believe them without doing their own research is foolish. Glenn Beck is - for the time being - a success at one thing: self-promotion. He has managed to procure a pinnacle for himself which brings him in a very nice life, thank you very much.
We should be wary of anybody who engenders such vociferous opinion (support or not) from those who are unwilling to engage in reasoned argument and discussion.
That is the true danger in arguing with idiots. They appear on both sides of the fence, and Beck is one of them.
