Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government

Glenn Beck, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers An Inconvenient Book and Glenn Beck's Common Sense, has stumbled upon the secret formula to winning arguments against people with big mouths but small minds: knowing the facts.

And this book is full of them.

The next time your Idiot Friends tell you how gun control prevents gun violence, you'll tell them all about England's handgun ban (see page 53). When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244. And the next time an idiot tells you that vegetable prices will skyrocket without illegal workers, you'll stop saying "no, they won't" and you'll start saying, "actually, eliminating all illegal labor will cause us to spend just $8 a year more on produce." (See page 139.)

Idiots can't be identified through voting records, they can be found only by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. If you know someone who fits the bill, then Arguing with Idiots will help you silence them once and for all with the ultimate weapon: the truth.

Evil Conservitive 1 says:

God Bless Glenn Beck for at last telling the American people the truth of the evils that our goverment has been trying to put upon us and their vast conspiracy to steal our freedom.

Evil Conservitive 1 says:

Glenn Beck has at last told the American people the truth of our tyrannical goverment. Both Democrats and Republicans are guilty of shredding the Constitution. He blows past the politicly correct and tells of the conspiracy to steal away our rights. God Bless Glenn Beck.

Sally says:

First we listened to the audio version..Fantastic, funny, full of facts. Even our 3 year old grandson could recognize the Idiot and laugh at his stupidity. Next I will read it to let it settle in. This is the best written and illustrated book I have read in a long time and with sloid fact checking.

matt says:

Everyone needs to read this book if they care at all for this country!

Dani says:

Currently reading it. I'm half way through and so far I love it. I'm 15 years old and I have my own political opinion. I love reading Glenn Beck because it's nice to see someone who isn't afraid to be criticized by the world and will speak his opinions.

Diane says:

I love the book. I found it very informative and full of common sense. I think it is a must read for everyone.

Ariana says:

The left has no ability for introspection and their reaction is the proof.

"Cletus" says:

Liberals are all the same.Reality frightens you,so U blame the messanger.Conservatism is a set of ideals,Liberalism the lack thereof. You want to bash the Becks,Limbaughs and Hannitys who have what? The bulk of the listeners..You want to silence these voices because..?The majority are uneducated, ignorant rubes, and your ...?wrong?There is a Air America and its kind doesnt work. Most Americans, educated or otherwise dont believe that dried up,tree-huggin 60's rhetoric. It doesnt work...see:USSR

theoneanonly says:

I think it's funny to see most of the opposition here vilify beck simply because he makes money, I wonder in the minds of those people just how much money a person is allowed to make before their viewpoints can be judged solely for what their viewpoints are?

If you're going to vilify the man the only thing you can judge him on are his words, not how much money he makes and not who writes his paycheck, if you want to debate with the man you debate with him about the issues if you want to prove a man wrong you prove a man wrong by showing the error in his words, not as simple as a hominid attack based on how much money he makes.

Good book, hope his detractors someday learn to put their petty jealousy aside so that they can actually learn to debate about the issues.

JamesS. says:

Mr. Beck has well reasoned arguments with copious citations and serious fact checking done. His book is well produced and an easy read for those on both sides of the arguments in the book. I hope that many if not all who are "true believers" in the hope and change movement will read it and be changed for the better by it. I will not hold my breath.

Ezra, you make Mr. Beck's argument for him with your ad hominem attack. Adolescence is a stage in the development of a normal human. Are you stuck on stupid?

Brookelorren says:

Just started chapter 3. It is a fun, easy read, with a lot of good facts.

Michey says:

I love him as he is telling us things as they are, and the truth is sometimes painful. but I don't think hiding the truth is a solution to get us better.

Hate it!

RAFE says:

Why is it that the majority of highschool dropouts vote republican? Why do people read this book and rant and rave about what ACORN has done when there was obvious voting fraud in the 2000 election and no one seems to care? And with the conservative view of religion in government, how many people have died in religious wars in our earths history? Are you saying that there should be prayer in school? I say that you are the idiots.

Flynn_the_Cat says:

*sighs* The rest may be accurate, i wouldn't know. By this bit... "When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244"
1. Even I know that it's CANADA's system, the US govt is looking at. The UK one is completely different.
2. Every review and published set of statistics around shows the US pays twice as much per capita for half the result.

So if you're going to use that as part of the book's description, at least provide more context, not just more pointless NHS bashing. Which, oddly, hardly anyone in the UK agrees with.

rd28 says:

glenn beck is not for america the beautiful. he is all about $$$$ -

bloomingrose says:

Glenn Beck uses diatribe and insults to get his point across. He is as far from a real, reasoned debater as you could imagine. I look at his opinions with a jaundiced eye.

Mike says:

Idiot vs teabagger... hmmmmm... I'll take being an "idiot" any day.

Chris says:

As someone once said, "Glenn Beck excels at telling us what people who don't think, think." This book, with it's facile half truths, distortions and lies is a fine example of that.

FactsnotFox says:

Fox news is mainly populated by a bunch of grumpy old conservative pundits co-hosted by cheerleaders in micro minis. Glen Beck is something else though. He employs demagoguery smoothed over with a studied humour. I personally cannot decide if his act is a cynical exploitation of the target audience in the pursuit of ratings or if he is genuine in his beliefs; as he is an ex radio talkback jock and part time stand up comedian I suspect the former.
These news pundits aren't new and in the words of the eminently more quotable George Bernard Shaw "But though there is no difference in this respect between the best demagogue and the worst, both of them having to present their cases equally in terms of melodrama, there is all the difference in the world between the statesman who is humbugging the people into allowing him to do the will of God, in whatever disguise it may come to him, and one who is humbugging them into furthering his personal ambition and the commercial interests of the plutocrats who own the newspapers and support him on reciprocal terms.

Demagoguery: strategy for gaining political power by appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public ? typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist, populist or religious themes.

theDon says:

oh my theoneanonly,

The money comments went over your head, funny how simple statements can be so difficult for some to grasp.

No one opposes Beck because he has money, what people oppose him for is his unscrupulous ways of achieving his wealth. He claims to be libertarian, but I would consider him to be a fallacious one. He has amassed his fortune by taking attractive viewpoints, many of them baseless, and perverting them in a way that attracts uneducated conservatives and polarizes anyone else who may disagree. It really is quite a shrewd business tactic, and for that I give him his due.

To summarize, it is the means to an end, rather than just the end outcome my friend.

Hmm... It seems you don't really need a book to argue with idiots...

theDon says:

Great book for people who need to be spoon fed arguments. He makes claims directed to the simple minds who really can't be bothered to try and learn about the world themselves. He is an amateurish economist who is under the impression that extreme laissez-faire policies are the answer, but sorry to say they are not. Anyways he tries to simplify complicated issues which makes the book appeal to conservatives who can't think for themselves, while making lots of $$$

TEB says:

Beck has been able to manipulate the mindless into believing he has their back. Beck is actually just protecting his wealth and the wealth of his friends through his books and talk shows. He just uses his troops (Listeners) to fight the ultra rich battles for,ie. R Murdock.etc.

Ezra says:

Glen Beck is a man who believes in an angel called Moroni. Do you think he might be a moron.

Readers Review "Arguing With Idiots"

Obviously, readers either love it or hate it. Currently with 165 Amazon readers chiming in, positive reviews outweigh negative almost 2 to 1. Here are a few samples.

5 stars: By ANDREW WHITE "awartworks.com" (Indianapolis, USA) - "Glenn and his staff are brilliant in their handling of current issues - providing citizens of the United States of America with honest and fact based counterpoints for leftist nut-jobs who long for the downfall of capitalism in our great nation (which would also lead to the down fall of our greatness). It is sickening to finally see the true face of the democratic party and how corrupt most politicians are - that they can so blatantly disregard the will of the people by subverting our Constitution every chance they get. I'm glad more of us are waking up and am hopeful that it isn't too late."

5 stars: "Kryptonite for Liberals" By J. Conlon (Louisville, KY) "Just read the negative reviews. The liberals are in full hate mode and for good reason. Anyone that is not an Obama cool-aid drinker will enjoy reading this book. It demolishes the tired old points made by your liberal friends and relatives with facts (The sources were given in the back of the book). If you are like me, there are plenty of idiot quotes in the book that I swear came strait from someone I know. This book will have an affect and could cause Glenn to overtake Rush as the person most hated by liberals."

5 stars: By L. Mattis "Rich Boxer" (USA) - "Great book, exposes liberals, (not very hard) for how foolish and arrogant they really are. I would bet that a majority of the single star reviews, didn't even read the book. Typical liberal, so predictable it's sad. This is a must read book. Very funny and honest"

1 star: By Graeme Buckley (Wellington New Zealand) "While the 1st amendment to the American Constitution (a document that Mr Beck and his ilk appear to have a nodding and rather selective acquaintance with), guarantees Mr Beck the right to spout his views (a tolerance he seems somewhat unlikely to extend to those who disagree with him), no one with any pretence to rational thought could ever agree with this twaddle. Yet another symptom of how the Republicans are becoming the natural party of stupidity. ..."

1 star: By Laura Ann Robertson (South Dakota, US) - "I cannot imagine any publisher being willing to publish a book by a man who in my opinion is a liar and an idiot and has had 60 companies withdraw their advertising from his show. What a waste of paper and trees. He is a disgrace and a shame to the USA. He can't even talk facts only lies. What does this say about the people in this country when they will buy a book written by someone who wouldn't know the truth if it hit him over the head? Don't we have any intelligent Republicans left in this country, like Eisenhower anymore and if so why don't they stand up and speak out.?"

Glenn Beck: The Redemptive Story of America's Favorite Political Commentator

Amazon Price: $9.95 (as of 12/17/2009)Buy Now

"Hello, you sick, twisted freak. My name is Glenn Beck. I'm glad you're here." Thus begins a typical day on the Glenn Beck Program. His spirited commentary is broadcast to millions of listeners every morning, making him the third-most popular talk radio host in America. He dominates in the realm of cable news as well, where his Fox News show is the third-most watched program. Glenn's detractors assume he is a typical Republican - perhaps a recasting of Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. If they listened or watched his show for just 15 minutes, they would quickly realize all their assumptions are wrong. Glenn Beck breaks the mold. He is one of the most unique participants in the political process. Glenn's personal story is remarkable. It includes tragedy at an early age, redemption at the brink of death, and success against all odds. He is an inspiring figure whether one agrees with his politics or not.

Funny you should mention that, since his entire book is essentially a straw man attack. Few people actually make the arguments he refutes. They are broadly similar to the arguments of liberals, but missing key points. You also might want to look up what a straw man fallacy is. While arguing that his book is wrong because he makes a lot of money is in fact a fallacy, its not a straw man fallacy, it's an "attacking the motive" fallacy.

i think it's very telling that his only detractors here use the strawman argument of saying that he has no validity solely because he makes a lot of money, lol

My wonder in their minds just not how much money a person is allowed to make for their arguments to have validity?

If you want to say why a man is wrong about the issues. The new debate him on the issues. You do not come up with silly ad hominem attacks based on that person's financial welfare, the issues are all that matter, not how much money that person makes.

Frankly, seeing these people lecture about not being able to think for themselves is hilarious considering that they all use the same argument.

Opponents should do themselves a favor and actually debate beck on the issues rather than simply trying to back door vilify the man because he's getting paid to do what he loves, inform the people.
