What is Argyle?
The argyle pattern is created by the use of diamonds placed in a sort of diagonal arrangement. Argyll is an area in Scotland and it is believed that the popular pattern of argyle for socks and sweaters was derived from the tartan plaids of the Clan Campbell whose historic home was in Argyll, Scotland.
If you look at the socks on the gentleman in the image, you can see a bit of the argyle pattern suggested. Kind of amazing that all of these centuries later, we are still interested in having this pattern as a part of our fashion.
