Finding Your Own Voice as a Designer

So you've found something you love to do, you are perfecting your skills, and you want to create masterpieces of jewelry! You've done the hard part and now its time to get down to business. How do you find your voice as an artist? First of all, you need to sit down and decide what kind of jewelry you want to design. Are the pieces just for you to wear? Or they for other people? Are they custom requests? Are they easy to construct, difficult to make, expensive or inexpensive? What is the market you are selling to? Who is your customer? It takes time and patience to figure this all out. But you must be precise when it comes to the image you want to represent to the public. Because this is how they perceive you, your art, and your business. So take your time and plan out how you want to go forward. Read books on artists, go to museums to see art, go to art shows and look around. Sooner or later you will come to a conclusion about your worth as an artist. It is then you will realize your own unique talent.

Betsey Johnson

Fashion Entrepreneur

This woman put a face on rad funky fashion!

Betsey Johnson (born 10 August, 1942, Wethersfield, Connecticut) is a fashion designer best known for her feminine and whimsical designs. Many of her designs are considered "over the top" and embellished. She also is known for doing a cartwheel at the end of her fashion shows. She took many dance classes as a child and adolescent which inspired her love of costumes. After high school, Johnson studied at the Pratt Institute and then later graduated from Syracuse University where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

In 1968, she married Velvet Underground's John Cale. They divorced in 1971. She had a daughter, Lulu, in 1975 who now works with her and a granddaughter Layla.

Johnson's fashion career started when she entered and won the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest. Within a year she was the in-house designer for the Manhattan boutique Paraphernalia. Johnson became part of both the youthquake fashion movement and Andy Warhol's underground scene, along with The Velvet Underground, Edie Sedgwick and Lou Reed.

In 1969, she opened a boutique called Betsey Bunki Nini on New York's Upper East Side. Edie Sedgwick was her house model and Johnson designed the clothing Sedgwick wore on her last film, Ciao! Manhattan.

In the 1970s, Johnson took control of the fashion label "Alley Cat" which was popular with the rock 'n roll musicians of the day. In 1972 she won the Coty Award. In 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line and then opened up her first retail store in Soho. Today, there are over forty-five of her stores worldwide.

In 2002, Johnson was inducted into the Fashion Walk of Fame. Her bronze plaque held one of her original sketches. Then, in 2003, she expanded her line for 2004 to include handbags, accessories, hats, and scarves.

In 2008, Johnson was one of the contributors to Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna's book Cherry Bomb.LA WEEKLY July 30, 2008

Celebrity Jewelry

How to get your stuff into the right hands!

There are some limited options here:
(1) Celebrity Gift Bags: This involves usually paying large amounts of money up-front to an agency involved in sponsoring you at an event where celebrities are guaranteed to be showing. I don't know if they actually guarantee that celebs will receive your jewelry but some have gift-bag offerings and that sort of thing. You may or may not hear from a celeb. Only for those who have lots of expendable cash to throw away.
(2) PR Agencies: Some will list your link or site for free. All charge to use their services and either receive contact info or provide companies interested in viewing your jewelry. This could be for a movie, tv show, a fashion shoot, etc. I have not used this option yet but it may prove to be interesting sometime in the future. I am listed on a PR site under a free listing but so far have not received any inquiries.
(3) Get the name of a publicist, costume designer or accessories person at a magazine, tv show or production company. Note: It is not easy to find these names - you will have to do some digging. You might even end up paying for contact info, such as IMDB. It might be worth trying as your expense will be minimal. Most sites or agencies let you cancel anytime so there are no long-term fees or contacts but I'd check it out first and make sure you're not locked into anything long-term.
(4) If you know anyone in the industry thru a relative, friend, or business contact, USE this info to your advantage. Find out as much as you can about where to send inquiries, and get a NAME and MAILING ADDRESS. If you feel comfortable enough you might want to try calling this person. Who knows, if they don't hang up on you, they might actually be helpful!
(5) I WOULD NOT send any samples or jewelry thru the mail listed on websites. I tried that and lost my shirt (or jewelry, as the case may be). Even if the site encourages you to contact the celeb thru that address, do not send anything before making sure the person knows it's coming. I would not even send samples to reviewers on websites or fashion blogs. I have been asked to do this and I do not feel it is necessary if you have decent photographs and descriptions. Why should you give away your hard-earned creations to someone you don't even know, who might or might not give you a favorable review? Its simply not worth the time.
I hope these tips will help you in your search for publicity and famous-ness. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of designers simply either lucked out thru favorable connections or paid alot of money to get their stuff seen. My belief is that if you are talented, hard-working and PERSISTENT in your jewelry efforts, you will eventually get customers and be recognized for your work. KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON...and if anyone reading this knows a great tip, please PAY IT FORWARD!!!

Make the Most of Your Assets

Here is quick guide to jewelry for differing body types according to www.jewelry.com:
RINGS: Marquise and Pear shapes will elongate the hand. Wide bands suit long fingers. Cocktail rings are good for stubby fingers! I say, wear whatever ring that turns you on and be happy!!!
BRACELETS: Chunky bracelets are great for the full-figured woman. Narrow Bangles suit petite women.
Of course, my bangles suit any woman! Check them out on Yessy.com.
NECKLACES: Chokers de-emphasize height for tall women, although I feel taller women can wear anything and look good. I guess that's because I'm petite and have to be more careful about what looks good. Longer necklaces elongate the body (THINK LARIATS) and also help elongate a square or round face. That's a lot of us! So note to us shorties: GO LONG!!!
EARRINGS: Long danglies are great for tall women, or women with long necks (if you are fortunate). Geometric shapes such as triangles can flatter full-figured women. My take: Ear-clips can create an illusion of height. Think short-cropped or spikey hair. Also a good option for short or petite women. Petites can wear pearls, studs or anything that doesn't overwhelm the face. I know there are many little gals out there saying Whoa-hold on there, I can wear anything. But trust me, it's just more flattering when your accessories don't overwhelm your best assets, which could include a pretty face, high cheekbones, or great eyes. Remember, jewelry is meant to enhance the wearer, not overwhelm her!!! So...lots of styles and shapes to choose from. Be sure to pick the best for your body-type to make the most of your GREAT ASSETS!!!
