Sharlot Mabridth Hall was born in 1870 and settled in the Arizona Territory in 1882. In 1909 Sharlot was appointed Territorial Historian. In 1927 Sharlot agreed to move her extensive collection of artifacts and documents into the Old Governor's Mansion and open it as a museum. This museum has a terrific historical map collection befitting a great Arizonan.

Ghost Towns ("early" developments that didn't develop?)
The southwestern United States has many stories of towns that sprouted and blossomed and died as quickly. Mouse over the yellow areas to see a list of ghost towns in the area.Ghost Towns
More Ghost Towns
Arizona has almost 300 ghost towns and camps. Some, locations like Jerome and Tombstone, are well known and survive today as part ghost town, part tourist. Arizona also has many more ghost town sites, which are weather ravaged, and little is left. The majority of Arizona's ghost towns are nothing more than a few foundations and some occasional mining equipment.

Native American maps
Arizona is home to 21 federally recognized tribes and over 250,000 Native Americans (2000 Census). Reservations and tribal communities comprise over a quarter of Arizona's lands. This map shows Arizona's Native American tribes locations and profiles of the tribes.Finding the tribal locations in Arizona
Fourteen Indian tribes are found within Arizona. Each tribe is distinct and the people and culture are unique within each tribe. More than 19 million acres of land belongs to the twenty reservations.
Many tribes now host cultural centers, hubs of education and history, which are open to the public. Although gambling is illegal in Arizona, many of the reservations (separate political entities) now have gaming available.
