Pet Blessings: History of Animal Blessings

Although most people often associate St Francis of Assisi with the Blessing of the Animals--the practice has been around much longer.

In fact, art and folklore suggest that blessing traditions may predate the religious ceremonies so popular today...but little documentation exists even on those ceremonies we have popularized.

Documentation of a blessing of the animals in Rome was found from the 1930s and recent research links the Olvera Street Animal Blessing to the founding of Los Angeles--1781 instead of the anglicized event that began to take hold in the 1930s.

Saint Francis was an animal lover and is the Catholic Saint of Ecology and Animals--but his feast day didn't start until the 13th Century.

Even so, most people associate the pet blessings and other blessing of the animal events with St. Francis but it was in fact, St Anthony who preceded him.

Saint Anthony of the Desert was the first associated with blessing of the animal events and was the Catholic Saint of the Animal Kingdom associated with blessing events much earlier--starting in the 4th Century.

Today animal blessings have moved into popular culture and are found throughout the world.

Pet blessings and similar events such as the Blessing of the Hounds, Blessing of the Horses, World Animal Day, Tumpek Kandang, take place at different times of the year.

Olvera Street
Olvera Street's Blessing of the Animals has been popular since the 1930s. The origin is linked back to 1781 and the founding of Los Angeles at El Pueblo (aka Olvera Steet). Did you know that there is a pet blessing expert?

Pet blessings and other ceremonies are on the rise according to animal blessing expert.

Pet blessings and other blessing of the animal events are on the rise according to pet blessing expert and author, Diana L Guerrero.

Guerrero is the author of the new book, "Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Creatures."

During her research, she found that Catholic pet blessing tradition can be traced back via anecdotal evidence to the 4th century and St Anthony of the Desert.

She said, "Most people associate the blessing of the animals with the feast day of St Francis of Assisi--but the tradition goes much further back."

In the United States, one of the oldest established blessing of the animals takes place in Los Angeles at Olvera Street. Although popularized in the 1930s, recent research indicates that the blessing goes back to the founding of El Pueblo back in 1781!

Guerrero said that some of the most popular pet blessings take place at Olvera Street and St Boniface in California, Duke Chapel in North Carolina, and the Cathedral of St John of the Divine in New York.

I enjoyed reading about St Anthony the Desert, that's the first I heard of him.

I'm inspired now to take my pooch along to the next Pet Blessing in my local community.
