Army Painting the Quick Way

I love playing miniature war games -- the sight of superbly painted armies moving across fantastic terrain is just plain fun. For my part, I play both Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40k. I love painting, but sometimes the notion of sitting down to painting dozens of models is too much. Either because of time limits, or because of patience.

Army Painter provides some great products that help speed up the process of painting your miniatures -- without a loss of quality. Their approach is very simple. Base coat the miniature in a primer color that will be the dominant color of the finished model. Block in the details (skin, decoration, other colors of clothing) with a single coat of matt paint. Then apply Quick Shade by either dipping or "splashing". The results are spectacular given the amount of effort. Using traditional techniques, you can spend a couple hours per miniature -- maybe more. Using Army Painter's approach, you can paint entire units in that time.

Getting Started with Army Painter

Army Painter provides all the items you need to start assembling and painting miniatures. Basic painting techniques start with white primer or black primer. White primer is used to bring out the brightest colors when you block in and paint details, but may require washes to dull the recesses. Black primer allows dark shadows and allows you to focus on just the highlights, but may require multiple coats for brighter colors to come out. Army painter has basic paint sets for both, plus the stuff you need to make plastic and metal miniatures, plus great basis.

You can prime your miniatures with colors other than black or white. Army Painter provides several additional options that may decrease how much paint you need to apply with a brush.

Army Painter Quickshade Dipping

Dipping models is one way to add lots of visual depth to your miniatures. It's a very fast technique of adding shades which deepen the darks and show off the highlights. Army Painter's product for dipping is Quickshade which comes in three tones -- soft, strong, and dark.

Army Painter Quickshade Splashing

Another way of applying Quickshade is to use a brush to liberally slop the shade onto the brush. This will work for all three shads.
