Let's check out some of the best sci-fi t-shirts on the planet.

If Science Fiction is your thing and you want to (literally) wear it on your sleeve but are afraid of looking too geeky, you've come to the right place! Fasten your space suits and prepare for lift off . We're about to enter a galaxy of hip and cool sci-fi themed t-shirts referencing film and literature ranging from the obvious to the obscure. Designs that don't scream "fanboy" (or fangirl) and graphics you'll feel confident wearing to the next comic convention, sci-fi fan gathering, or even the annual community bar-b-q. Ready? Let's go!

So who's we?
We are a husband and wife team of graphic designers/illustrators who design pop culture graphic tees on the side. Click on the image above right to shop our designs.

Space, the final frontier. ~Battlestar Galactica

The pursuit of hipness.

It's hip to be square... sometimes.

It's an accepted fact that science fiction is often equated with nerdiness. So now, the big concern is how to avoid traversing the thin line dividing geek chic and, er, dorky when wearing your fandom on your person. Here are a few guidelines that you can keep in mind when choosing what kind of designs to wear.

1. As much as possible, avoid mainstream or commercial movie poster tees. Unless you're under 12 years old, these designs will look much better on your bedroom wall. Take note that I specifically added mainstream/commercial in there because classic poster tees like the vintage Star Wars poster shirt below are exempted from the rule. Remember, vintage/retro designs are always hip.

2. As much as possible, avoid logo tees. Especially the ones with that shout out "Star Trek" or "Battlestar Galactica" in logotype. Why? Well, from a t-shirt designer's perspective it's not very cool and creative. We believe there are better ways to pay homage to a movie.

Logos of fictional corporations or products from obscure science fiction flicks are the exception, like the Star Trek Enterprise logo tee pictured below for instance. Notice that the symbol is not strategically placed across the chest like usual and is positioned on the right breast area. Because of that little detail, it becomes a homage to the actual shirt worn by Captain Kirk in the series. And like before, vintage/retro logo tees such as the Flash Gordon logo tee on the right are exempted from this rule.

3. Obscure design references are always cool. It's what differentiates real fans from poseurs.

For example, the design on this shirt might make some people scratch their heads in confusion ("Greetings from Caprica City? Huh? Where in the world is Caprica?") while on the other hand, fellow BSG fans will nod at you in approval.

Now isn't that simple enough to remember? Read on because I can't wait to show you more of our great sci-fi t-shirt finds.

Shirts from a galaxy far, far away.

Let's start with the "obvious" designs.

If you're a budding SF fan, why not start with shirts that feature the old reliable? Let's face it, Star Wars is THE ultimate monster sci-fi flick. But don't worry about blending in with everyone else, we made sure to do away with the ubiquitous poster tees and selected funny, unique & artistic designs that are guaranteed to catch attention wherever you go!

~ HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey)

2001: A Space Odyssey T-shirts

2001: A Space Odyssey is a groundbreaking film directed by Stanley Kubrick based on Arthur C. Clarke's novel of the same title. Check out the t-shirts featured below.

HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey High Quality T-Shirt Black Large

Amazon Price: $25.00 (as of 12/27/2009)Buy Now

From the manufacturer: We've created another rare swag item to portray a Kubrick character who we all love to quote, HAL 9000, the artificial intelligence without whom Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, would not be what it is. Some see him as a villain, whereas we see him as a beautiful neural network whose mental wiring just wasn't built to sustain lies. As such, HAL's descent into insanity is what this shirt is all about. Memorable symptomatic quotes of HAL's demise, mangled amidst the lines of Daisy Bell, fading into blackness, is our memory of HAL 9000.
