What are Essential Oils?
Typically essential oils in concentrated form can be very strong and irritating, sometimes causing adverse reactions from certain individuals. For this reason essential oils should always be blended with another type of oil to dilute its strength.
Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy today although their uses have been found as far back as history will go. At different points throughout time one will find many different claims made on certain oils. Claims that range from miraculous medical remedies to purely cosmetic reasons can be found throughout time. Essential oils are used in many different products to create a more pleasant smell; candles, cleaning products, cosmetics and the list goes on.
Today essential oils are gaining in popularity for use in aromatherapy practices. They're used in massage oils, candles, bath scents, and even some medicinal purposes. Many people are finding how scents can impact people's moods and outlook. Simply by using a certain type of essential oil one can ease or calm anger, anxiety, grief, fear, fatigue and the list goes on. Some people claim that these oils can even have an effect on some physical ailments.
There are several methods of extracting oils from plants. Plants have different consistencies and one may not tolerate the same process as another one. Distillation is a way of using steam from heated water to vaporize certain ingredients from the plant. These vapors are separated into another unit where they revert back into liquid form and are then used. Expression is another way of extracting oils. This is commonly used with thicker, hardier plants or fruits such as lemons and oranges. These are cold-pressed to release the oils, which is then collected for use in products. Solvent extraction is used for the more fragile plants such as flowers that would be destroyed in the distillation process. In using this method, a solvent is used to bring out the essential oil along with waxes. Then it goes through a secondary process that then separates the oils from the waxes. This method preserves the compounds in these delicate plants by using lower heat. The high heat in the distillation process destroys these more fragile plants.
Once these essential oils are extracted they are then blended with carrier oils to reduce their concentration.
For centuries people have found that certain fragrances will create a particular mood or feeling within them and they gravitate towards those certain scents. Aromatherapy simply took this practice further and studied how each essential oil affected people and created methods to enhance those feelings.

Carrier Oils
The kind of vegetable oils that are found in the grocery stores are not suitable as carrier oils because they are heated in the process and don't have the same effect. Typically carrier oils are cold pressed oils from such plants as avocado, olive, pecan and other plants which are not generally known for their strong scent. They are always natural oils that are derived from plants.
The best carrier oils are never subjected to a heating processed or if it is, it's generally a very brief exposure or very low heat. By doing so, the oils are able to maintain the highest quality of consistency. There are different types of oils and each responds best to a certain method of extraction. Some of the different ways are:
Cold Pressed - There is very minimal heat used in this type of extraction. It's generally the best method of extraction by most for the temperatures are strictly regulated so that it never exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Expeller Pressed - There is a tiny bit of heat produced by this method but only due to the hydraulic presses that are used in this type of extraction. This method is widely used next to the cold pressing extraction application.
Unrefined - By using this method of extraction, one is ensured getting the highest quality oil possible. Oil is extracted by using a machine and filtering with a screen. These unrefined oils are generally considered to be the richest possible product. The natural deep coloring is an indicator of the unrefined process.
Refined - These oils have been exposed to both high and low temperatures in addition to bleaching in order to change the color and scent of these oils. It's generally a more economical oil to use, but not the best.
Partially refined - There are some oils that tend to go bad quickly, so in order to be able to utilize them, they have to undergo some of the refining processes. However, only some of the processes are used rather than all of them, as in the fully refined method.
Keep in mind that the sole purpose of carrier oils is to dilute essential oils and minimize their potency and irritation to the skin. It's also a good thing to understand how certain carrier oils will work with the different types of essential oils. Some mixtures may not have as positive an effect as others. In aromatherapy, it's important to have the correct blend of oils to be able to produce the desired effect on whatever ailment one is trying to soothe.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and similar aromatic compounds from plants, for the purpose of improving a person's mood, cognitive function or health. Preliminary scientific evidence is growing in all these areas.Edris AE, Pharmaceutical and therapeutic potentials of essential oils and their individual volatile constituents: a review, Phytotherapy Research, 21 (4): 308-323, 2007 An aroma therapist is the person who performs the aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is a generic term. It is used by manufacturers (of personal care, wellness and hygiene products) as well as practitioners, including massage therapists, chiropractors, nurses and doctors. Over-the-counter products that make use of essential oils (or their constituents, such as menthol and methyl salicylate) include mouthwashes, liniments and "rubbing ointments", such as Listerine, Mentholatum Deep Heat and Vicks VapoRub. However, aromatherapy purists insist that neither essential oil constituents as such, nor synthetic fragrant chemicals, should ever be used.Tisserand, Robert (1977). The Art of Aromatherapy. London: C.W. Daniel. ISBN 085207140X
Because many essential oils are potent antimicrobials, they can be useful in the treatment of infectious disease.Carson CF, Hammer KA, Riley TV, Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree) oil: a review of antimicrobial and other medicinal properties, Clinical Microbiology Reviews, 19 (1): 50-26, doi: 10.1128/CMR.19.1.50-62.2006. They are used as medicines, often in combination with other herbal preparations, by a small group of doctors in France. In nursing, essential oils are increasingly used in pain management, anxiety/depression, and Alzheimer's disease.van der Watt G, Janca A. Aromatherapy in nursing and mental health care, Contemporary Nurse, 30 (1):69-75, 2008 Aromatherapy may be used in combination with other forms of alternative medicine. Terms such as 'essential oil therapy' 'clinical aromatherapy' and 'medical aromatherapy' have been used by some journals, educational institutions and practitioners, in order to distance themselves from association with the commercial aspects.
