What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy uses plant oils to promote physical and mental well-being. There are many of these essential oils available - each one having different healing properties.

Perfume oils are different from essential oils. You can't use general perfumes and expect to get the same results you would if you used the proper essential oils, so you need to be sure you're using the right products.

Advanced Aromatherapy:
The Science of Essential Oil Therapy

The unfortunate thing is that many companies that claim to be aromatherapy companies are simply selling chemical perfumes, so it's very important to be sure you're buying from a reputable company that really understands what aromatherapy is.

It's not just about aromas, it's about the effects certain essential oils have on the body, and their power to heal.

Aromatherapy can have both physiological and psychological effects on the body.

When the essential oils are inhaled, they can act on the brain to stimulate certain reactions. Some of these can help heal mental or emotional issues, and some of them can even help heal some physical ailments!

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. It is believe that the Chinese were the first to use the scent of various plants for their healing powers. Later, the Egyptians, Greeks, and Persians picked up the use of various plant oils.

The term aromatherapy may not have been coined until the 20th century, but the practice was around for a very long time before the word came into being!

Aromatherapy Products Come in Different Forms

Essential Oils, Candles, Topical Applications, and More!

There are many different forms of aromatherapy products. Although essential oils are the most important for getting the true healing powers of aromatherapy, there are other products that can be used to derive emotional benefits.

Essential oils are the most important part of aromatherapy. These can be used in several ways. They can be inhaled through a tissue, diffused in steam, or burned in a candle.

There are a number of different types of diffusers on the market. Different types may work better with certain types of oils.

The most comprehensive guide to aromatherapy ever published

Some essential oils are also applied topically to the skin. These are rarely applied directly to the skin, as essential oils can be quite strong, and may damage the skin if applied directly in their concentrated form.

If they are to be applied topically, they are usually mixed with "carrier oils" such as sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, or apricot kernel oil.

Candles are a common aromatherapy product. Often, the candles that are sold as "aromatherapy candles" are not truly aromatherapy candles, but are simply artificially scented candles.

These provide little real healing benefit. Although they may be soothing, they cannot offer any real healing benefits unless they contain real natural essential oils.

So if you intend to purchase an aromatherapy candle, be sure to check to see what type of candle you're really getting.

You can also buy other products that claim to be aromatherapy products, but many aren't. For example, many aromatherapy bath products are simply artificially scented bath salts or soaps.

Again, although these may be soothing, they won't offer the same type of healing benefits as products that contain real essential oils.

How to Blend Scents to Make Your Own Aromatherapy

A beginner's guide to making aromatherapy blends.

In order to create your own aromatherapy blends, you'll need to know what each type of essential oil does, and how they work together.

There are a number of great resources on the market that can teach you about the various oils and their uses. I recommend The Power of Aromatherapy.

Here are a few blends to get you started:

Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit:
Restoring Emotional and Mental Balance with Essential Oils

The Acne Blend

* 1 oz light cold-pressed grapeseed oil
* 12 drops lavender oil
* 6 drops tea tree oil
* 1 drops geranium essential oil

Mix the oils together in an amber glass bottle and roll on a table gently for a couple of minutes to blend. Do not shake. Apply a few drops to the skin of the affected area, but be careful to avoid eyes, lips, nasal passages, and ear canals. Each time you use the oil, roll the bottle gently to remix the oils.

The Panic Attack Blend

* 1 drop rose oil
* 4 drops frankincense oil

Mix into 2 cups of water and bring to a simmer. Inhale the steam, being careful not to get the steam inside the eyes.

The Stress Reducing Blend

* 3 drops grapefruit oil
* 1 drop jasmine oil
* 2 drops ylang ylang

Mix into 2 cups of water and bring to a simmer. Inhale the steam, being careful not to get the steam inside the eyes.

Remember, you can make all types of your own aromatherapy blends if you know about the various types of oils and what they do.
