Say After Me: I Am An Artist

Ranked #15,754 in Arts & Design, #320,169 overall

Are you an Artist? No? Why not?

How many of you are artists? [Not too many of you have raised your hand] What happened? If I asked this of 5 year olds, everyone would be jumping up and down, raising their hands and screaming "I am, I am, I am". I challenge you to change your thoughts and reconnect to the artist that you once were. I challenge you to create art every day.

So many of us make excuses:

♥ I've been told that I don't have talent

♥ I didn't go to art school - I have no training

♥ I don't have the skill - I can't even draw a straight line

♥ I don't have the time

♥ I don't have the art supplies

♥ I don't have the space for a studio

♥ I'm not the creative type - I'm just not inspired.

♥ I could never do that

♥ Art is an expensive project - materials cost too much

♥ Artists are poor and struggling - I need to make money at what I do.

♥ Art is a waste of my time - I could be doing something more productive.

On and on we go and then we stop, never giving ourselves a chance. What we need now is CONFIDENCE! I am asking you to suspend your disbelief and say after me:

♥ I am an artist

♥ I can create

♥ I can make the time to put art and creativity into every day of my life.

Just Do It!

How to create a beautiful image

I Did It!I started creating beautiful images by learning how to Zentangle®. This is a simple process taught by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. You create art by drawing repetitive patterns. You start small - a 3 and a half inch square tile is your canvas. Pencil and pen in hand you take a Deep Breath - Relax - and Smile. 15 minutes or so later and you have a work of art that you can appreciate and share.

If you can draw a line, a circle, a square, a triangle then you can create a pattern or a tangle as we call them. You do not need to graduate from art school. You do not need to spend a lot of time or money. You already have the skill. If you wish, you can expand to creating inspired works of art that you can sell.

♥No mess

♥No bother

Whispers of Aloha - Zentangle Inspired

Art-a-Day

Spirit Friends

Each day for the past year I have been Whispering Aloha. My Whispers of Aloha have been heard from the uplands to the sea ~ on Twitter, Facebook and Squidoo. Aloha means much more than Hello and Goodbye. "Aloha means compassion for all the things on earth" (Serge King). It suggests love and much, much more.

As an Artist of the Spirit, I create art as a contemplative and spiritual practice. My practice is called HUNArt ~ a combination of the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna and art as a moving meditation.

I will be combining my Whispers of Aloha (my daily prayers as one of my friends calls them) with Zentangle® an intuitive artform created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.

Taking inspiration from Duane Keiser who created A Painting a Day ~ I will be creating a Zentangle inspired Art~a~Day. These leaves will then be made available for purchase from our online store.

Journey with me as Earl and I wake up each morning to take a walk to a place in front of our house, where the ocean crashes upon the dark lava stone shore. On my walk I will find a leaf from the autograph tree found in Hawaii. I will greet Laka, the goddess of hula and of plants and with a chant, thank her for this gift from nature. When I return home I will continue this meditation by etching the leaf with a bamboo knitting needle. I will be asking for inspiration for a Whisper of Aloha as I create tangles or patterns on the leaf in Zentangle style. I will then breathe in the beauty of this symbol and send it out around the world.

I am creating Zentangle inspired Art~a~Day because I felt a need to create a new pattern in my life. I wanted to establish a ritual or a habit if you will ~ of walking to the ocean at sunrise ~ creating art ~ and Whispering Aloha. A thank you to Leo Babauta for Zen Habits.

If I Can Whisper - I Can Write

You Can Too!

Aloha LeafEveryday I Whisper Aloha. Everyday I send my whispers to the world via my WeBlog, Twitter, Facebook and Squidoo. Everyday people are inspired by my poetry. I am an Artist of the Spirit. And it only takes 140 characters per day of my time. All I have to do is look up, look down, look to my left, look to my right and look within to be inspired.

If you can whisper, you can write. Try it. It doesn't have to be long.

♥ Write on a napkin when you are drinking your cup of tea, coffee or juice.

♥ Write on a sticky note

♥ Twitter

♥ Play with word magnets on your fridge

♥ Doodle and write while inspired by and watching TV

yes, yes you are. My usual response is, if you can write you can draw, since we learned to draw before we learned to write. Thanks for the journey of remembering :-)

The confidence to begin is more than half the battle of becoming an artist. Sometimes I think the term artist holds people back. It really is all about just having fun with your creative stop and stop obsessing over the final product. Nicely done lens.

I like the way you look at the importance of having fun. That's exactly what children do when they immerse themselves into painting. They don't worry about the end results as so many of us adults do when we sit down to create.

Your work is lovely. You are correct -- I do struggle to call myself an artist. I usually say I do crafts but feel embarrassed to call it art. I think many of us struggle with this issue. Thanks for your encouraging tips.,

Thank you nightcats for your sharing. I'm finding that what most of us need is confidence. We need to believe in ourselves and not worry about what other people think of our art. I find that creating art as a process of relaxed focus or meditation has less stress than creating art to hang in a gallery for the world to see.
