Painting and Sculpture on Vehicles Creates - Art Cars!
Artists are a creative bunch and one of the most interesting art projects I've ever seen artists create is to design and decorate an art car. Creating an art car involves decorating a vehicle with paint, stickers, sculpted ornaments or all sorts of other found objects to transform it into a work of wild and wonderful art.
If you start to research "art cars" you'll find lots more than hippie vans and VWs tricked out as art car projects. In fact just about anything with wheels can and has been transformed into a rolling work of art - bicycles, motorbikes, small cars, vans, buses and trucks all get the art car treatment. Art cars, you might say, are the original and ultimate pimped ride. They're one of a kind wild wheels and they're a heck of a lot of fun.

In the mid-1970s I owned a tired, 15-year-old Ford Falcon that a former owner had repainted by hand, but it wasn't really an art car, more like a car brushed with flat blue navy surplus paint. In the early 1990's my younger daughter decided to perk up her rust-bucket first car by decorating . entire rear end and truck with political and band bumper stickers. Then she tackled the interior and covered the dashboard with plastic figurines from Happy Meals that her friends had eaten. That's how I first got interested in the art car movement ; since then I've discovered art cars everywhere.

I haven't attended an official Art Car Festival but I've seen plenty of wild and wonderful decorated vehicles on the road or parked at at music festivals and at the sea shore. Art cars do best in warm weather - they don't mix well with snow or ice. That's probably why there are so many art car shows and festivals in the California and the Southern USA.
You don't need any special skills or training to convert your car into an art car - you just need a creative idea and gumption. If you're planning to drive your art car after you decorate it, be sure to keep the engine and interior accessible. You might want to check local automobile registration requirements so you'll know how to properly tag and insure your art car to keep it on the road.

- This is awesome! I have always loved art cars and wanted to make one... Maybe I will do it with my current vehicle, a 1978 Lindy motorhome! I have already started decorating the inside and hanging my art on the walls. I also used colored tissue paper and mod podge to create a stained glass effect on the rear (bathroom) window.
