Tips about entering Juried Art Competitions

blog posts and articles available on the Internet

These links cover tips and techniques for entering art competitions. They cover a variety of aspects which artists need to think about when preparing to enter an art competition.

Links also include a commentary on juried competitions - how selection works in art competitions and what rejection really means. Some of these links are by American artists commenting on american juried competitions - but many of the observations are true the world over.

Making a Mark: 20 tips for entering art competitions
What do you need to know when thinking about entering an art competition. Here's twenty tips - what are yours?
Making a Mark: Juried art competitions - does size matter?
Bigger is better. Small is beautiful. Does size matter? I know - one of those perennial questions which always gets asked but in this post I'm asking this question in relation to juried art exhibitions. Recently somebody commented (offline) on the photo below of the award-winning paintings in my recent post RWS / Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2008 - exhibition review. The comment was to the effect that my reader hadn't previously realised the size of some of the paintings being exhibited.
Making a Mark: Selection, jurying and must-see lists
If there's one thing I've learned from watching people enter work into exhibitions it's that the decision will vary depending on who looks at the work in a given context. What gets rejected from one exhibition will win prizes in another.
Making a Mark: The Websites of Contemporary Painters in the UK
As always when doing one of my major artists' website search exercises, I've learned a few things about the current status and state of play of artists' websites in the UK.

Art Calendar - Judge and Jury: What to Expect When Entering Art Shows, By Annie Strack
Entering an art show, at any level of your career, is a wonderful means of gaining validation and recognition. For beginning artists, receiving appreciation from people other than friends and family can be very encouraging. Competition is an excellent way of building up a resume, especially if one is fortunate enough to win an award. Plus, more people may see your work, increasing the possibility of sales and getting into galleries.

Guest blogger Michelle Davis Petelinz gives artists tips for wowing the jurors who look at your slide submissions.
Petrified by rejection
"I felt I couldn't take the rejection from galleries and shows and what it takes to be a real artist. I just wanted to paint beautiful things--I wasn't looking for angst or meaning or whatever it is that the experts say makes art."

Art competitions - challenges and complications

what happens - and should happen - when things go wrong

Any number of things can go wrong when an art competition is held. This section deals with:
* the challenges around matters relating to originality and copyright for artists, jurors and competition organisers
* sponsorship and funding of art competitions

Do not forget there can be serious ramifications for your art career if you get it wrong

Making a Mark: Art competitions and copyright - the AWS Gold Medal debate
This is a lengthy post highlighting issues relating to the use of reference photographs for artwork and is of relevance to:
* art societies which have to deal with disputes about copyright
* artists selling work or entering competitions with artwork based on a reference photo taken by somebody else, and
* artists who work in a hyperrealistic/photorealistic way.
Making a Mark: American Watercolor Society Gold Medal - the final verdict on Sheryl Luxenburg
It was a long time coming, however last month the American Watercolor Society, Inc., (AWS) finally released the following statement to the AWS membership and the artist community at large about the withdrawal of 2008 Gold Medal from Sheryl Luxenburg.
Making a Mark: AWS gold medal controversy - the final word
Yesterday I read a post on a forum by professional photographer Annie Kitzman which appears to answer the question which was THE hot topic two years ago. (see links at the end of this post). Was the gold medal winning painting at the centre of the American Watercolor Society controversy actually painted - or was it a giclee print?
Making a Mark: Government seizes control of Singer & Friedlander
This post is about the impact of the banking crisis and the looming recession on the sponsorship of art competitions and prizes.

Turner painted some of his late masterpieces, including Rain, Steam and Speed - The Great Western Railway, in the Summer Exhibition itself. Varnishing Day was traditionally used for varnishing and touching up paintings in the galleries just before the exhibition opened to the public. An onlooker recalled him 'standing very close up to the canvas, [he] appeared to paint with his eyes and nose as well as his hands'.

Figurative / Representational Art

The Threadneedle Prize for Painting and Sculpture

£25,000 first prize; £10,000 Visitors Choice Prize

The £25,000 Threadneedle Prize was inaugurated in 2008. It's aim is to be the UK's leading showcase for paintings and sculptures that promote the practice of representational art, but challenge its language and assumptions.

The Prize encourages both experienced and emerging artists to submit fresh and intriguing works that are strong and topical observations on the world.

To date there have been four winners of the prize - interestingly ALL of them have been women!

An Annual Exhibition is held at the Mall Galleries in London in September each year. All works are sourced from the open competition and there is no invited or curated element.

The Prize's terms of entry and mode of operation have been refined in each of the first four years as entries have grown.
* In 2011, the £10,000 Visitors Choice Award was selected by visitors to the exhibition from ALL the works on display.
* In 2012, all artists must submit via digital image for pre-selection.

The competition is open to all artists - whether established and emerging talent - who are aged 18 or over and who live or work in the UK or Ireland.

Artists are encouraged to submit recent work which has not been previously exhibited and, preferably, work that has been created for this competition.

In 2008, 71 works in a variety of different media were selected from a national open submission. In 2010, just 46 works were exhibited.

In 2011, initial submission was via digital entry and the number of entries increased to a record of 4,350 entries, more than double the number received in previous years.

The CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR 2O12 will be published in the Spring of 2012 (March/April)

Threadneedle Prize 2011

Key changes for 2011:
* a new two-stage selection process. The first stage will pre-select - from digital photos - those to be invited to submit work for selection for the exhibition
* the definition of what the prize is about has been improved - it's now simpler and more accessible
* ALL works in the exhibition are now eligible to win the £10,000 Visitors' Choice prize

Last year over 2,100 works were submitted but only 46 works were chosen for exhibition. This year the website states 65 will be selected for exhibition.

MAKING A MARK: Threadneedle Prize 2011 - a new selection process
This is a reminder about the Call For Entries for the Threadneedle Prize 2011 - for painting and sculpture - plus it also highlights and comments on the changes in the entry and selection process this year and another change which I've long lobbied for! This year is also a good year for artists who are computer 'savvy'.
MAKING A MARK: Three women artists win Threadneedle Prize in first three years
Today I've been given some data about entries to the Threadneedle Prize 2011 which is absolutely fascinating for an ex-number cruncher like me. Read on to find out
* why this Prize is so very different - and
* why it's much more representative this year!
MAKING A MARK: Review: Threadneedle Prize Exhibition 2011
Yesterday I went to the Preview of the Threadneedle Prize Exhibition which opened today. Below I offer you:
* my comments on the exhibition in general - which have been a challenge to write this year!
* plus comments on the work by the selected artists
MAKING A MARK: Threadneedle Prize: The Making a Mark Select Seven
Last week I reviewed the Threadneedle Exhibition. This week, like the jurors for the Threadneedle Prize and as I did last year (see My Threadneedle Prize shortlist), I'm going to share with you the seven works that I've selected as worth highlighting in 2011.

Making a Mark: Threadneedle - just another art prize in 2010?
Some key changes in 2010 which makes it much more like other art competitions. The public no longer decide the main prize.

Making a Mark: Threadneedle Prize Registration Opens
It's interesting to see how the criteria for entry have been changed and refined since last year's very successful inaugural year (see last year's call for entries here) when over 2,700 entries were submitted to the 11 regional prize drop off points around the UK
Making a Mark: Threadneedle Prize - exhibition goes online today
Today's the day (August 14th) that the 87 paintings and sculpture selected for this year's £25,000 Threadneedle Prize exhibition go online at www.threadneedleprize.com/exhibition. Images have been published however voting by the public will not start online until 1st September.
Making a Mark: Exhibition review: The Threadneedle Prize - the shortlist
Today the Threadneedle Prize Exhibition opens to the public, having been online since 14th August. I had a chance to see it yesterday while the hanging was being finalised and have had a good look at all the shortlisted candidates. This post is about the shortlisted works.
Making a Mark: Selection for Threadneedle Prize & my shortlist
Which Threadneedle piece gets your vote? is an article written by Brian Sewell, the art critic of the London Evening Standard about the selection process for this exhibition. He was one of the jurors last year and observed the selection process this year.....

I love being a jury of one - there's none of those pesky alternative perspectives to deal with! Here's my choice of an alternative shortlist. I'm not choosing any of the official shortlist on purpose - although I would have given serious consideration to a couple of the pieces.
Making a Mark: Sheila Wallis wins £25,000 Threadneedle Prize
The public have voted in their thousands. The votes have been counted and tonight came the announcement that Sheila Wallis has been awarded the 2009 Threadneedle Prize (£25,000) for her self-portrait.

Making a Mark: Threadneedle Figurative Prize (part 1) - view the entries and vote!
The £25,000 Threadneedle Figurative Prize is brand new and is the largest art prize in the UK ever to be decided entirely by the public - based on votes in the gallery and cast online.

The public are choosing from a shortlist of seven artworks - which you can see in this post. Interestingly the shortlist offered in this first year of this very prestigious new prize for figurative work looks nothing like the photorealistic works which crop up so very often in the shortlist for the BP Portrait Award.
Making a Mark: Threadneedle Figurative Prize (part 2) - Green, Mills, Murdoch and Schierenberg
I saw the exhibition of works accepted for the Threadneedle Figurative Prize on Tuesday and was very impressed with the overall standard and presentation.
Making a Mark: Threadneedle Figurative Prize (part 3) - Brandford, Shaw, Williams and the DVD
Following on from yesterday's post about artists short-listed for the Threadneedle Figurative Prize, the ones I'm commenting on today are the ones that I responded to less on an emotional level. Which is not a comment on their skill or their concepts - just that they didn't reach out to me in the same way.
Making a Mark: Nina Murdoch wins the Threadneedle Figurative Prize 2008
Nina Murdoch, 38, is the winner of the inaugural year of the £25,000 Threadneedle Figurative Prize for Untitled, her amazingly luminous egg tempera study of a derelict corner of South London. It's been described as a work that transforms the mundane into something sublime.

I'm rather cockahoop as I was not only the first person to cast a vote in the gallery but was also the first person to vote for Nina's work!

Lynn Painter Stainers Prize 2012

moving to the Mall Galleries in 2012

This prestigious art prize was created in 2005 by the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, the Lynn Foundation and with The Spectator as media sponsor.

The purpose of the Prize is to encourage creative representational painting and promote the skill of draughtsmanship. This annual exhibition is open to all UK artists with prize money totalling £22,500 and an engraved gold medal for the winner.

There was no exhibition in 2011. Entry is now open for the 2012 Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize,

The 2012 exhibition will take place at:
* The Mall Galleries, SW1 28 March - 5 April 2012
* WH Patterson Gallery, Albemarle Street, London, W1 from 16 - 20 April 2012.

Representational painting is finished we were told, now that the camera can copy reality better and faster. Fortunately for painting, we were told wrong. What the voice of progress failed to mention was the fact - so clearly demonstrated in this exhibition - that copying reality is not what painting is about

Artist George Shaw - Interview at Baltic Gateshead

The film was made for BALTIC and shown by guardian.co.uk . It shows artist George Shaw walking around his new exhibition 'The Sly and Unseen Day', BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and explaining how it came about. The paintings are from a series he has worked on for the last 15 years, and depict the 'unseen' spaces of his youth, growing up in a small post-war estate on the outskirts of Coventry. He paints using everyday model-makers paints which provides a distinctive palette and a glossy sheen.

In an intimate interview, Shaw discusses sadness, memory, being uncool at art school and why his painting table reminds him of 'Last of the Summer Wine'.

The Turner Prize

based on nominations / NOT an open competition

"The Turner Prize is a contemporary art award that was set up in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art.

The prize is awarded each year to 'a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding'.

Nominations are invited each year, and the prize is judged by an independent jury that changes annually. The four shortlisted artists present works in a show normally held at Tate Britain before the winner is announced in December. Artists are not judged on their show at Tate. The decision is based on the work they were nominated for.

In 2022 the Turner Prize's main exhibition has shifted to the Baltic in Gateshead in an effort to redress regional balance and oppose the London-centric criticisms which have been made of the Prize in the past

Over the recent decades the Turner Prize has played a significant role in provoking debate about visual art and the growing public interest in contemporary British art in particular, and has become widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe."

Jerwood Visual Arts - Contemporary Painters

Jerwood Visual Arts - Contemporary Painters
Jerwood Contemporary Painters aims to promote, discover and support imaginative and vibrant practice in contemporary painting and offers an exciting opportunity to emerging artists who are at a particular stage in their development, falling between student and recognised artist status. Up to 30 artists who have all graduated since 2000 are invited to show one selected piece of work and will receive a minimum of £1000, not as a 'prize' but as a participation fee. This fee is unusual for any group show or prize in rewarding all the artists showing in the exhibition and is an important part of nurturing serious support for artists at this critical point in their careers.

Jerwood Visual Arts - Painting Fellowships

Jerwood Visual Arts - Painting Fellowships
Jerwood Painting Fellowships are an open submission opportunity. Three artists will become Jerwood Painting Fellows. Each will receive a bursary of £10,000, will be assigned a mentor for a six month period and will be expected to work towards an exhibition within the Jerwood Visual Arts programme at Jerwood Space, London and on tour. Smaller Works

ING Discerning Eye

exhibition at Mall Galleries, London

The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is an Annual Show show of small works. Lesser-known artists have the opportunity to be hung alongside contributions from internationally-recognised names. Six people select the works from an open entry. In addition they invite small works by artists they like.

The selectors are made up of: two artists, two collectors and two critics. The exhibition is then hung in sections of the gallery so that each hang has its own distinctive identity.

In 2011, over 600 works were on display at the Mall Galleries in November

Making a Mark: ING Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries (November 2007)
I went to see the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries yesterday. It's a unique art event insofar as it is the exhibition of pieces which have been chosen by two artists, two collectors and two critics who act as selectors for what are, in effect, six individual parts of the same exhibition.

2,300 contemporary artworks are submitted by artists from all over the UK. Artists in the process of establishing their careers can display work alongside well known artists.

Drawing

Jerwood Drawing Prize

exhibition at Jerwood Space

The Jerwood Drawing Prize was established in 1994 which now makes it the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK.

It's an exhibition which seeks to promote and reward excellence and talent in contemporary drawing practice through the support and recognition of the work of all artists in the field of drawing, including that of established artists and that of emerging artists engaged in the discipline of drawing.

The exhibition is open but submissions are limited to domestic only i.e. all artists resident or domiciled in the UK. Works can be submitted through the regional collections centres in Cardiff, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Falmouth, Manchester and London.

The exhibitions usually start in the early Autumn in London at the Jerwood Space, 171 Union Street, London SE1 0LN

Jerwood Visual Arts - Drawing
The number of artists submitting work, and the coaches of students arriving at the Jerwood Space and each venue every year testify to the interest and focus of many established and emerging artists on the role of drawing within their practice, be it exploratory, affirmative, generative, transformative, or summative. The visitor numbers on the tours also testify to the popularity of the exhibition with a wider audience. The administrative centre for the exhibition is based at Wimbledon College of Art, one of London's outstanding specialist art schools. The project is delivered through the working partnership of Wimbledon College of Art and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
