Vintage Art Glass Vases
A Short History of Art Glass
While hand-painted glass vases and glass decor from centuries ago are not technically considered "art glass", it is difficult to separate any particular artistic glass vase from the art glass term used in the last few decades. If it is glass and it is artistic, I refer to it as art glass.
How and Where Artistic Glass Vases Began
From the earliest times, humans have not only invented out of necessity, they have found ways to turn their inventions into artwork. The most obvious places we see this is in the making of vessels, such as pottery, glass work, and architecture. It is believed that glass making began in Mesopotamia centuries before the birth of Christ, but the earliest examples of art done with glass come from early Egypt and Rome.
The vintage hand-blown and painted vases on the market today are nowhere near that old, but date back to the 1800's, with most popular coming from the early 1900's. Art glass vases and sculptures had their height of popularity in the 1920's, again in the 1950's, and have recently become popular again.
Five Types of Art Glass Vases
Hightlighting a few modern and vintage vases
- Bohemian or "Art Nouveau" - The creation of Bohemian art glass began over five centuries ago in what is now the Czech Republic, but evolved into Art Nouveau into the 18th and 19th centuries.Though Bohemian vases range from simple crystal or glass vases to pieces that have been hand-worked into elaborate representations of nature, the most highly recognized Bohemian art glass vases are those that have been painted with floral designs.
- Carnival - Early 20th century. Carnival glass is molded and patterned and fired in such a way as to produce a tinted shimmer.
- Depression - Sold and given away for promotional purposes during the Depression Era. Though depression glass was relatively inexpensive to make, it is now highly collectible. Prices may range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars for one vase.
- Studio Art - While Depression glass, carnival glass, Bohemian, and most Vaseline glass are produced in bulk in factories, studio art glass is hand-made. These types of vases are done by one artist or a small group of artists. Vase makers may hand-blow, press, mold, and paint the glass anyway they wish -- it's their studio and they do what they want with it. Studio art glass is not limited to a particular type of glass.
- Uranium or "Vaseline" - This refers to the glass materials and the lighting effect obtained from the uranium. In truth, vaseline glass may also be used to make carnival glass or other types of vases. The easiest way to tell a vase is made of uranium glass is to look at it - there will be a greenish tint to it. Even uranium glass that appears to be clear will show up as green under a black-light.
Painted Daisy Art Glass Vases
I confess that I have tried painting on glass. So far, I have not quite discovered a knack for it. My "thing" is rock painting, but I am interested in learning how to create beautiful art glass paintings.
I also love daisies, so when I found this image of hand-painted art glass daisy vases, I had to follow the link and include it in my lens. I do not know the artist or seller and am not affiliated with Addoway.

Word of advice: If you want to buy art glass, make sure it is packaged carefully -- especially hand-blown glass vases. These are often thinner in some areas than others.
