Essential Supplies for Art Journals

Using art in your journals or journaling on your art can add a new dimension to your creativity. I have been journaling with mixed media for several years now and have learned that producing something meaningful does not need a plethora of materials. In fact, my favourite pages have been created with minimal supplies.

I have gathered together a selection of art and writing materials, which will help you on a wonderful journey of discovery into your art journal. I have also added in a few of my pages which may inspire you to try art journalling for yourself.

Less Can Be More in Art Journals

A Basic Art Journal Kit Is All You Need

Black page journal

I started this journal at the beginning of the year. I decided that what I wanted to express in my journals was more important than how much twiddly stuff I could get into it. I wanted to create pages in a short time, not spend days on them.

I chose a simple black-paged blank book. I can customise the plain heavy card covers in due course once the journal has more character. The materials I used were water soluble crayons, some collage, a glue-stick and a white pen.

I like to recycle old journals by scanning and printing out the pages, then cutting them up and using them as borders or rearranging them in a new way. This kind of repetition can add a certain style or uniqueness to your work that becomes your own. So the borders on these pages are just chopped up copies of previous pages of mine.

Basic Art Journal Kit

A blank book with heavy pages able to withstand watercolor. Alternatively, cut/tear sheets of watercolor paper and use loose rings to bind them.

Crayons or pastels - oil, soft or water-soluble; your choice

Glue stick or double-sided tape dispenser.

A selection of pens

Old magazines for cutting up

You can add to this as you go along. It can be fun to experiment new materials.

Caran DAche Neocolor II Watersoluble Crayons

These are the watersoluble crayons I use. I have the box of 40. They are a little expensive but last for ages so are a really good investment. They can be used as ordinary crayons or you can add water to produce intense swathes of color. You can also wet a brush and stroke it on a crayon so you can apply color more delicately.

Fabric Journals

When you want something relaxing to do, these fabric journals are the perfect way to zone out. I use glorious Kaffe Fassett fabrics and hand stitch each one into sweet little pillows, which are then quilted and sewn together. They don't take long to make and all you need to do is sew in your choice of paper and you have a completely unique journal... or, if you are like me, a whole collection of them. They make fantastic gifts too!

Gorgeous Handmade Leather Bound Journals

Inspiring and beautiful

I do make my own plain old ring-bound journal but I also have a few special ones. I treated myself to a gorgeous, soft leather bound one a year back and am still working in it. I love the way it smells and the lovely way it wraps around itself and ties with a leather thong.

Be one of the first to get your hands on this new book by Traci Bunkers.

Traci Bunkers is a passionate and quirky self-employed mixed-media and journal artist living in Lawrence, Kansas. "I love rusty things, glitter glue, old books to cut up and cheap cameras. I'm smiling when my hands are dirty with paint or when I've altered a camera or something to use as a printing tool. It means I'm doing what I love-making art and doing things with my hands. Lucky for me, I do what I love for a living." Even though the DIY and repurposing life styles are now in vogue, for this self-proclaimed love child of MacGyver, reusing and repurposing have always been her way of life as a creative way to problem solve and make ends meet. Through her one-woman business Bonkers Handmade Originals, she sells her nifty creations such as hand-dyed spinning fibers and yarns, original rubber stamps, handmade books, knits and original artwork. She also creates an artzine called Tub Legs, designs knitwear, and is a knitting, spinning, and crochet technical editor. She has been teaching workshops across the US since the early 90s and her visual journal pages, artwork, and knit designs have been published in numerous books and magazines.
