What is print on demand?
Print on demand (POD), sometimes called "publish on demand", is a printing technology and business process in which new copies of an item are not printed until an order has been received. While it most often applies to books and DVDs, it also applies to the reproduction of artwork in a variety of ways.
POD FOR ART
Digital technology is ideally suited to publish small print runs of posters (often as a single copy) as and when they are needed. The introduction of UV-curable inks and media for large format inkjet printers has allowed artists, photographers and owners of image collections to take advantage of print on demand.
For example, the National Gallery, London installed a print on demand system in July 2003. The system increased the number of images available as prints from 60 to 2,500, which is almost all of the gallery's permanent collection.
HOW POD IS SUPPLIED
There are two main categories of suppliers:
- companies which are geared up to produce fine art prints and/or posters and/or greetings cards
- companies which are primarily about printing books - but can be used for printing marketing material and other products based on artwork or art instruction
Traditional publishers are also moving across to print on demand as it's more economic in terms of inventory costs.
Many traditional small presses have replaced their traditional printing equipment with POD equipment or contract their printing out to POD service providers. Many academic publishers, including university presses, use POD services to maintain a large backlist; some even use POD for all of their publications. Larger publishers may use POD in special circumstances, such as reprinting older titles that had been out of print or doing test marketing.
ECONOMICS
Profits from print on demand publishing are on a per-sale basis, and royalties vary depending on the route by which the item is sold. Highest profits are usually generated from sales direct from the print-on-demand service's website or by the author buying copies from the service at a discount, as the publisher, and then selling them personally. Lower royalties come from traditional "bricks and mortar" bookshops and online retailers both of which buy at high discount. The higher the volume sold the lower the royalty inevitably becomes, as the retailer is able to buy at greater discount.
Because the per-unit cost is typically greater with POD than with a print run of thousands of copies, it is common for POD books to be more expensive than similar books that come from conventional print runs, especially if that book is produced exclusively with POD instead of using POD as a supplemental technology between print runs.

More information about print on demand
- Print on demand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Print on demand (POD), sometimes called publish on demand, is a printing technology and business process in which new copies of a book (or other document) are not printed until an order has been received. "Print on Demand" developed only after digital printing began,[1] because it was not economical to print single copies using traditional printing technology such as letterpress and offset printing.

- Print On Demand Publishing - An Ingram Lightning Source POD Example
People who have worked in the publishing industry in any capacity are often dubious of the claims made for the print-on-demand publishing model, because it violates the "rules" of publishing as they know them. Our best answer to the critics is to start off with a case study of a year in the life of an actual POD book, published by the author through Lightning Source, including the actual sales, profits, and trends. It's important to get an overview of the whole process and costs at the outset. If you have trouble following the discussion the first time through, just keep an eye on the dollars. - Print on Demand
- WritersServices Chris Holifield Inside Publishing
Print on demand is a new printing technology which delivers, literally, print on demand. It has the power to change the way books are published radically, although many publishers are not yet using it on any scale and many writers are not yet familiar with its possibilities.

- Zazzle has consistently good quality, good customer service, has made life easier for their contributors while CafePress made it harder, is building a great community (you can feedback on site, you can save favorite shops and products), has customizable products (CafePress does now too...but it's a bear to use if you have linux), has frequent sales and coupons, lets you move your image around in stead of making a gallizion different sized images for differnt products, low threshold for volume bonus, etc. MY ONLY complaint about them is that they print things from different places, so you pay a lot more in shipping if you are buying different types of products on the same order--its as if you were buying them each from different shops.

- You can delete it from your shop, but it may still show up in the marketplace (long story there). But deleting from your shop is easy--at least with basic shops. You click on products, you click the check next to the products you want to delete, and then up at the top (right under the "add a product" button) you'll see the text "Make Changes To Checked Items Below" and a drop down list that says "Choose and option." Click on that drop down list and choose the option Remove Items, then click the little green "Go" button right next to the drop down list. I think they ask you if you're sure, but that's pretty much it.

- I have tried Cafe Press, Imagekind, Red Bubble and Zazzle, much prefer Zazzle, it's just the BEST site in every way to me. The cards are gorgeous, and being able to customize them and add text & designs to the inside and even the back is great for everyone. I have found it much easier to sell on Zazzle too, and you get great discount offers there from time to time.

Print on Demand - Art
Why artists use print on demand
Here are some of the reasons why artists use print on demand.
Print on demand frees up time:
- no need to spend time making contractual arrangements with a printer; POD is offered 'as is' with a menu of options for additional services at fixed prices
- no need to spend time on packaging and posting prints
Print on demand reduces risk:
- no need to sink capital into getting a work printed in the conventional way - which could be a waste of money if you don't know what its sales potential is
Print on demand keeps your space for producing art rather than storing it:
- no need to find storage which keeps conventional prints in good condition

These suppliers can provide you with anything which combines text and images and needs to be bound in some way
- a portfolio to use with galleries
- a brochure for commission clients
- exhibition catalogues
- a marketing brochure
- calendars
- teaching material and art instruction books as print publications or ebokks
eBooks are electronic, downloadable books. You need to look for suppliers who enable access via a wide range of eReader devices and platforms, such as the Kindle, the Apple iPad®, Barnes & Noble NOOK, and your home computer.
You are completely responsible for the set-up and content. How it works (in generic terms) is:
- Upload print-ready files or site tools to create new documents from scratch
- Everything is printed to order - no need to find a space for your inventory
- files are stored online so you can make changes and update content quickly and easily
- online stores enable online purchases and shipping handled by other people
Each publishers try to generate features which mark it out in some way.
The exact way it works may vary from POD publisher to publisher so make sure you understand exactly how their set-up works before placing an order
- WARNING!!! TechCrunch - Amazon Muscles Print-On-Demand Services
- Amazon has announced that it will only sell print-on-demand books printed by its own print-on-demand service BookSurge.
The print-on-demand book business has thrived in the last few years as players such as Lulu, Blurb and others have catered to publishers looking to reduce overhead on inventory. It will be very difficult for anyone to compete with Amazon in the print-on-demand space. - Amazon.com : Sell on Amazon
- Sell your products on Amazon.com. You have products people want. Amazon has the eCommerce experience people expect and trust.
- Questions My Dad Would Ask Before You Started that Ebook
- The pitches go like this: turn your archived content into an ebook that will rake in bucks while you sleep. Invest a weekend, maybe a few weeks, and you'll have a book that will establish you as a thought leader and open the flood gates to new revenue streams.
Lulu
Lulu.com is the biggest POD supplier of publications.
Founded in 2002, it produces Hardcover and Paperback books, eBooks, mini books, photo books, calendars, cookbooks, travel books - to print on demand specifications and also merchandises these publications.
It has two sets of customers - the publisher and the purchaser.
There are six international versions of the site for U.K., French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch customers
For publishers the important thing is that at Lulu, it's free to publish. Authors keep all the rights to their works and retain 80 percent of the profit they set when their books sell.
In terms of distribution, Lulu operates a global print network - which means the printing is outsourced - which means print quality has the scope to be variable depending on local quality control mechanisms. However this does enable cost-efficient worldwide distribution.
Distribution outlets also include Amazon.com and the iBookstoreSM (Lulu is an Apple certified aggregator of content for the iBookstore)
Since it was founded in 2002, some 1.1 million creators from more than 200 countries and territories have created accounts with Lulu. Each month Lulu adds approximately 20,000 new publications to its catalogue

- I use most of the POD sites you have described here. What I am interested in finding is a POD site that does NOT include their logo on the finished product, so that I can order my own art postcards and offer them on other sites. Anyone know of any good ones out there?

- I don't know about the others, but on Zazzle their logo is removable. You can replace it with your own or leave it blank. Their postcards are NOT standard size however.

- Greetings, Great job, as usual, on putting together a meaty Squidoo on specific topic. I would like to suggest you add to it my www.ArtPrintIssues.com blog. It ranks, along with your Making a Mark blog, as one of the Top 75 Art Blogs on e www.invesp.com/blog-rank/Art. While I do dispense much useful information for any artists, the content also focuses on the art print market. With more than 400 art business related posts since 2007, the blog provides visual artists a wealth of marketing and business knowledge.
I am also the author of the definitive book on the art print market. "How to Profit from the Art Print Market" is in its second edition. It has been a top seller consistently ranked on the Amazon.com "Business of Art" and "Prints" categories since first published in 2005. Last year, I published an e-book, "How to Price Digital Fine Art Prints." It has the wisdom of ten art print and art marketing experts to help artists devise a profitable pricing strategy for their prints.

- Great lens! I love both redbubble & zazzle. Zazzle has a huge range of products to adapt your artwork on. The quality of the t-shirts at redbubble so far are a hit, but you can't brand yourself as much as on zazzle. Fo me the community at both have been an inspiration. It is a exciting time to be an artist and designer opportunity is becoming easier if you can work on your marketing.

- What a lot of useful info gathered in one place. I've checked into most of the art PODs and have ended up concentrating on Zazzle for now. They have added some great new products over the past year although some of the introductions have been bumpy. The forums are pretty darn helpful for learning and communicating.

- I am off to read your various posts about Imagekind (that was what drive me to this page: infos about that site). I want to sell prints of my photos, nothing else (for everything else I use zazzle). I want a shop dedicated to photos only. Imagekind keep popping in search, but need to read a bit before deciding.

- Very informative lens! I'm thinking seriously of using a print on demand site (before your lens I wasn't even sure what it was called) and needed some reviews and ideas before I chose one. Your lens was very helpful to me, thank you. I would like to sell some full color, good quality prints as reasonably priced as possible without losing my rights to my art.
