What is an Art Society?
An Art Society is created by a group of artists who collaborate and co-operate for mutual benefit.
* An art society can have various names - group, club, society, institute etc
* It can be very large or very small.
* It can be media oriented or subject matter specific.
* It can be completely open or it can create hurdles to entry
* It can include professional and /or semi-professional and/or amateur artists
* It can very active thoughout the year - or limit itself to an annual exhibition of works by member artists
What is an Art Exhibition?
An Art Exhibition is a display of artwork for viewing by a target audience. Typicallt artwork is displayed for a short period of time - although that can be several months
Art Society exhibitions very often run for one to two weeks - sometimes longer and sometimes shorter. The exhibitions of National Art Societies are frequently held in major cities. In the UK that city is normally London.
* Art exhibitions can be large or small.
* They can be open or closed
* They can be media oriented or subject specific
* They can be traditional or contemporary - or a mix of both
* Sometimes the only reason an art society exists is to have an annual exhibition.
Art Societies which have Annual Open exhibitions frequently "Call for Entries" from both members non-members. Payment of an annual subscription to an art society normally entitles the artist member to have some preference in terms of how artsowkr submitted are dealt with. This varies from a discount of the entrance fee to a larger allowance of works for artist members
Exhibitions have always been prime methods of assessing the artwork of prospective new members. As such, the exhibition for a non-member is a "way in" to signature status which entitles artists to letters after their name indicating their membership of the a society. Of course, signature status varies depending on the status of the individual art society. In the UK, the art society which sits at the top of the pyramid is the Royal Academy of Arts

Annual exhibitions of the major art societies normally follow well known and/or well advertised schedules. Notices are normally given by way of adverts in most of the major art magazines and journals.
* In the UK, a significant number of the leading national art societies are affiliated to the Federation of British Artists based at Carlton House Terrace and the exhibitions are held at the Mall Galleries.
* Two major exceptions are the Royal Watercolour Society annd the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers which exhibit at the Bankside Gallery next to Tate Modern.
* A number of non-FBA national art societies also choose to avail themselves of the facilities at the Mall Galleries and both submissions and open exhibitions are held at the Mall Galleries.
* Other national societies choose to administer their open exhibitions themselves and locate their exhibitions at other locations and galleries in London and around the country.

The Society's inaugural Exhibition, held in 1896 in the Modern Gallery, was the first to be devoted exclusively to contemporary miniatures and was an immediate success. King Edward VII granted the Royal Charter in 1905. In 1926 the RMS extended its welcome to other forms of miniature art. Recognition of this wider scope was officially confirmed when Sculptors and Gravers were added to its name by Royal Command of King George V.

You may submit up to four works.
Categories of work acceptable are: painting, drawing, sculpture in all media; miniature work in all media, ceramics of a non-utilitarian nature, engraving, lithography, etc. - Making a Mark: Society of Women Artists - Annual Exhibition entry details
- The Society of Female Artists was founded in 1857 because in the UK in the mid-nineteenth century, women were not considered to be serious contributors to the field of art. Consequently they had great difficulty in obtaining a public showing of their work. The Society was created with the aim of providing an opportunity for female artists to exhibit their work. At the first exhibition, 149 women showed 358 works, some hiding their true identities under a pseudonym.
The Society of Graphical Fine Art
- The Society of Graphic Fine Art
- The initial aims of the Society were to give the opportunity for artists to exhibit works unimpeded by purely commercial considerations and ' to uphold and maintain the interests of all those forms of art that do not use colour as a form of expression'. At that time, black and white work was specified, colour being thought to be more allied to painting. Print making was allowed, mainly consisting of engraving, both on wood and copper and the etching process.
Whilst black and white work and traditional skills are still a priority, in recent times a more progressive outlook has encouraged the use of colour and non - figurative work. The Society holds two membership elections a year, drawing excellence being the main criteria of membership in all media disciplines, though oil paintings are not allowed. - Society of Graphic Fine Art Events

- Hi, I have taken over the administration of the website for Lytham St Annes Art Society, which you have listed as a local art society in Northwest England. I have re-launched it under a new URL, namely : http://lythamstannesartsociety.co.uk. The old URL: lsaartsociety.org.uk, which provides a link to the new website, will be allowed to lapse. The new website has a link to Squidoo at http://lythamstannesartsociety.co.uk/links.html. Could you please change the link to Lytham St Annes Art Society to http://lythamstannesartsociety.co.uk
Thanks

- Another great lens with lots of detail. I have been looking for info however on ways to manage an exhibtition for a very small, leisure art group in the UK. We hold one at least once a year but are often disappointed by the number of visitors. Publicity seems to be one of our stumbling blocks - do you have any info/links which you could pass on. I would be very grateful.

- Funny you should say that - I'm about to start working on a series of blog posts about art societies and exhibitions were one of the things I had in mind
Publicity requirements and associated arrangements will always vary a lot depending on the type of exhibit held and its venue. Book mark this lens - and you'll see relevant links shortly I hope!

Archive: Art Society Exhibitions in the UK 2010
