What is an Art Exhibition?

article on Wikipedia

Art exhibitions are traditionally the space in which art objects (in the most general sense) meet an audience. The exhibit is universally understood to be for some temporary period unless, as is rarely true, it is stated to be a "permanent exhibition". In American English, they may be called "exhibit", "exposition" (the French word) or "show". In UK English, they are always called "exhibitions" or "shows", and an individual item in the show is an "exhibit".

Art Society Exhibitions in the UK - 2009

Annual exhibitions of the major art societies normally follow well known and/or well advertised schedules. Notices are normally given by way of adverts in most of the major art magazines and journals.

Societies which are members of the The Federation of British Artists hold all their exhibitions in the Mall Galleries. The Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers both hold their exhibitions at the Bankside Gallery. Other art societies make arrangements to hold their exhibitions in various venues - some of which will also be at the Mall Galleries.

The Royal Society of British Artists

The Royal Society of British Artists
The Royal Society of British Artists advocates the highest standards of skill, expression and concept throughout the visual arts. We represent 'leading edge' artists who employ a sound knowledge and application of draughtsmanship as the basis of their work.

Our annual exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London, together with other regional and international members' exhibitions we hold throughout the year, promote a renaissance of core aesthetic values within the visual arts.

The Royal Society of British Artists also works with schools, colleges and universities to uphold these principles within education and to encourage excellence in the development of emerging artists.
How to exhibit
The Annual exhibition of the society is held in March. The dates for the next exhibition are Wednesday 18th March to Sunday 29th March 2009 (closing at 1pm).

Works on exhibition include both members and non-members and represent every form of media including fine art prints and sculpture.

Royal Society of Miniature Painters Sculptors and Gravers

Royal Society of Miniature Painters Sculptors and Gravers
The Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers was founded in 1896 by Alyn Williams who was the first President, a position he occupied until 1898, and then again from 1908 until 1941. The Society's inaugural Exhibition, held in 1896 in the Modern Gallery, was the first to be devoted exclusively to contemporary miniatures and was an immediate success. King Edward VII granted the Royal Charter in 1905. In 1926 the RMS extended its welcome to other forms of miniature art. Recognition of this wider scope was officially confirmed when Sculptors and Gravers were added to its name by Royal Command of King George V.

You may submit up to four works.

Categories of work acceptable are: painting, drawing, sculpture in all media; miniature work in all media, ceramics of a non-utilitarian nature, engraving, lithography, etc.
Making a Mark: Society of Women Artists - Annual Exhibition entry details
The Society of Female Artists was founded in 1857 because in the UK in the mid-nineteenth century, women were not considered to be serious contributors to the field of art. Consequently they had great difficulty in obtaining a public showing of their work. The Society was created with the aim of providing an opportunity for female artists to exhibit their work. At the first exhibition, 149 women showed 358 works, some hiding their true identities under a pseudonym.

The Society of Graphical Fine Art

The Society of Graphic Fine Art
The initial aims of the Society were to give the opportunity for artists to exhibit works unimpeded by purely commercial considerations and ' to uphold and maintain the interests of all those forms of art that do not use colour as a form of expression'. At that time, black and white work was specified, colour being thought to be more allied to painting. Print making was allowed, mainly consisting of engraving, both on wood and copper and the etching process.

Whilst black and white work and traditional skills are still a priority, in recent times a more progressive outlook has encouraged the use of colour and non - figurative work. The Society holds two membership elections a year, drawing excellence being the main criteria of membership in all media disciplines, though oil paintings are not allowed.

Exhibitions: This page is the gateway to the online shows of our Annual exhibitions. The major exhibition each year is an open and juried exhibition.

The rules of entry for this exhibition are that works should be completed in "pure" coloured pencil ONLY. Some graphite is allowed under the pencil, and watersoluble pencils are also allowed, but not pastels.

The aim of these exhibitions is to prove what can be accomplished using just coloured pencils. If an artist is successful in getting into this show three times within a five year span, they are entitled to put the letters UKCPS after their name.
