Where to find art supplies in the UK
Do you have problems finding art shops or art suppliers or just anywhere that has got that illusive item that you want. Do you forget who stocks which range?
This site provides details about where to find fine art materials supplies in and around the UK. It shares details of online suppliers and the locations of retail stores that you can visit as a retail or trade customer.
Where I have used a store or supplier personally and have an opinion or recommendations then you'll find this listed too. I don't have any recommendations about other sites - other than those provided by other people. (See the comments section and/or this thread on my blog Resources for artists - art materials and art suppliers.) Please remember opinions are just that and what works out best for me and others might not work out best for you. Do let me know what you think by providing a comment. Who do you recommend? (As you'd expect this isn't an invitation for suppliers to advertise their stores or sites!)
VOTE for how you buy your art supplies and who you think is the best supplier of fine art materials.
New links are added on a regular basis. It's intended to provide modules which focus on different types of media over time. See the Bookmark and share section in the right hand column to create a bookmark or link to be able to check back to this site and/or e-mail this site to a friend who is interested in sources of art supplies
If you live or travel in the USA - or want to import art materials from there - try consulting the companion site Art Supplies in the USA - Resources for Artists

Online Retailers of Art Materials - based in the UK
Things to watch out for
* Online suppliers can choose to offer deep discounts on prices found in retail stores.
* Suppliers who have both retail and online supplies may have two different pricing structures and/or deals which are only available online.
Watch out for the despatch costs
* what might seem cheap on an item by item basis may start to look a lot more expensive by the time you've added in the shipping.
* work out what is the best size of order to take advantage of any deals on free shipping
Overseas customers should remember to check with their Customs whether they will have any import tax to pay.
If you have a view on any of the suppliers listed - or would like to suggest a new one - please use the comments function below.
- Heaton Cooper Studio Ltd > ART MATERIALS
- Art shop with online purchase of art materials and art supplies.
Based in the Lake District and run by a family who have been in the art business for a long time. They also sell original paintings and prints of the notable Lake District landscape artists, William Heaton Cooper and Alfred Heaton Cooper.
This is my view
"Heaton Cooper are a very reliable on-line supplier of artist quality art supplies. I've ordered stock and have found that their site has a really excellent selection of fine art materials from a range of manufacturers - including some which are hard to find elsewhere. They're not the cheapest but the stock always arrives promptly and is extremely well packaged." - L Cornelissen & Son Home Page
- Cornelissen & Son was established in 1855 and have been trading in London as art

- Artists' materials at discount prices. Supply a wide range of paints, paper, canvas, brushes, easels, accessories and more. Fast and friendly service.
Viven Blackburn says:
"I like Ken Bromley - I usually look up online and then order by phone as it is still a family business and they are very very helpful. They don't carry the range of larger companies but the prices are very competitive and the 'real person' with knowledge to talk to is a major bonus :)"
A fellow artist states
"It's still a family business and if you phone with queries they are really helpful. Goods come next day and I've found them very pleasant to deal with. They have the best deal I've found on cartons of canvasses". - Cult Pens

- The SAA Price Promise *The SAA has always represented good value...now we make you our price promise - if you can buy an indentical product cheaper anywhere else - we will match it! (see site for more details)
Tina Mammoser says
"I'd also recommend the Society for All Artists shop (saa.co.uk) for some things. Members get quite a hefty discount on some items and while their range is generally aimed at the hobbyist there are some good deals to be had. They are the only supplier I have found for my 5" square canvases." - Art Discount - Art Supplies and Artists Materials
- Online store for art supplies, craft materials and artist's equipment. They claim massive discounts and speedy delivery. They use reputable carrier services who require a signature on delivery. The great majority of our orders have to be dispatched by carrier rather than by post for the reasons of size, weight and the signature requirement.

Minimal and confusing information about the trading name and company. The website says it is "The Print Gallery Art Shop" - but uses "Wheatsheaf-Online Sales" for its Google Ads. Personally I don't like dealing with businesses which don't know what their name is and which don't provide any background information aimed at making me feel comfortable about doing business with them. But others may well feel different.........

Cornelissen & Son was established in 1855 and have been trading in London as artists' colourmen since then. Cornelissen is known throughout the world as a specialist niche supplier of art materials from premises that a 19th Century apothecary would recognise.

- Paintworks Ltd - art materials and picture framing, Kingsland Road, London
99-101 Kingsland Road , London , E2 8AG
Tel:020 7729 7451
Situated in Hoxton within London's East End, the gallery is surrounded by art and artists. White Cube, Flowers Gallery and The Geffrye Museum are all within five minutes walk as is Hoxton Square and Columbia Road. Located on the fringes of the City - but comfortably outside the congestion charging zone. Customer car park behind the shop (access via Falkirk St.) and a couple of bike racks at the front. Buses serve Shoreditch with many stopping just a few yards down Kingsland Road.
Paintworks says:
"A range of some of the finest brands in the world with paints, brushes and papers to satisfy the needs of the most demanding professionals. Also stocks the raw materials for DIY production of canvases and paint making. A keen regard for value for money is reflected in prices."
This is my view
"I've used Paintworks to stock up and they tend to usually have good stock levels and the staff are often knowledgeable. They have Talens Van Gogh pencils in open stock! I like their packs of paper. They also offer a framing services and I found the chap to be both very helpful and skilled - ATLANTIS ART MATERIALS - The art supplier to London's leading artists
- 7-9 Plumbers Row, London E1 1 EQ (just behind the Mosque on Whitechapel Road)
Atlantis is conveniently located in the East End of London for access by car or public transport.
TUBE: Aldgate East 300m
RAIL: Liverpool Street Station - 15 minute (brisk) walk
DLR: Tower Hill Station - 10 minute walk
BUS: 253, 205, 25
CAR: free parking (but gets busy at weekends)
This is my view
"Atlantis used to be my main supplier - from when it was in Brick Lane but it's undergone a lot of changes since then and, as a result, I now use it a lot less often and buy a lot less from them (except for paper).
It's housed in a very large warehouse and is still good on supplies of paper (and canvases for painters) but appears to be increasingly oriented to art school students (ie popular and cheap).
Overall the ranges and number of items stocked have reduced over time (presumably because of competition from online sites?). It also suffers from odd gaps in the range of products stocked plus 'stock-outs' more frequently than I encounter elsewhere. Staff used to be good but are now not always so knowledgeable as they used to be.
I understand it used to have a good mail order business however the catalogue was badly out of date for a very long time. The current print catalogue is dated 2007 - but I don't remember ever seeing it in 2007!
What I find most odd is that their website is very awkwardly constructed and has always been devoted to showing pages from their mail order catelogue. The catalogue webpage is dated 2003 and comes with a 'health warning' on the front page about the prices being out of date!!! There is no online ordering process on offer except via e-mail. - C Roberson & Co

Roberson started in 1810 in Long Acre in central London because of its proximity to the artistic quarter of London and to the home of the Royal Academy, in Somerset House. It moved to its present location in Holloway in 1987 and is now an independent company thriving as a trade-only supplier, supplying many of the products for which the company was famous in the past.
Roberson was one of the most important colourmen in London. Among its customers were artists such as Turner, Whistler and Sargent, designers such as William Morris, William de Morgan and Walter Crane and the royal and famous including Queen Victoria, Lady Randolph Churchill and Winston Churchill. The company prepared its own paints and manufactured a wide range of materials to recipes that were kept secret and actively protected. Some of these recipes are still used today. - London Graphic Centre

London Graphic Centre is a leading supplier of graphic materials. It offers a range of art and graphic supplies, easels, fine art products, craft materials, computer consumables, portfolios, art supplies, and designer gifts.
This is my view
"I remember the days when the fine art range was good and I could spend hours and hours in this shop before they relieved me of a large amount of cash. The range is now much reduced from what it was. It's very much a graphic design supplier now and it probably still caters quite well for volume demand from hobby artists and graphic designers using watercolours. The coloured pencil stock took a big hit when graphic designers went digital. Good range of portfolios, carry cases and technical equipment." - Cass Art

One shopper commented
"The local Burns and Harris has a nice selection of art supplies, but most of the staff have no clue about the stock and just a very basic knowledge of art and art supplies in general. If I ask if they have something, I usually get a shrug of the shoulders and a blank expression and no offer to help me see if they do have what I am looking for. I am sure it is not like that at all of the stores, but it does put me off of going there unless I need something quickly." - Links & Addresses of Scottish Art Shops

Gosh - I've never ever heard of Cowling and Wilcox - but I'll now add them to the list and look out for them in future! Posted April 13, 2008 |

Thank you for vast information! Definitely I keep this page as a favorite for the future reference! By the way, I sometimes go Cowling & Wilcox in Soho, London, because it's convenient location. Is this shop meet your criteria? Posted April 13, 2008 |
I like Harold Hockey, an independent art and stationary shop in Bristol. They have a good range of reasonably priced products and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful - they will happily go and check stock for you if things aren't on the shelves.

I like Great Art, an online supplier with an extensive range. They've always given me good, quick and efficient service.
