Cornelissen & Son was established in 1855 and have been trading in London as artists' colourmen since then. Cornelissen is known throughout the world as a specialist niche supplier of art materials from premises that a 19th Century apothecary would recognise.

Situated in Hoxton within London's East End, the gallery is surrounded by art and artists. Located on the fringes of the City - but comfortably outside the congestion charging zone. Customer car park behind the shop (access via Falkirk St.) and a couple of bike racks at the front. "I've used Paintworks to stock up and they tend to usually have good stock levels and the staff are often knowledgeable. They have Talens Van Gogh pencils in open stock! I like their packs of paper. They also offer a framing services and I found the chap to be both very helpful and skilled

This is my view
"Atlantis used to be my main supplier - from when it was in Brick Lane but it's undergone a lot of changes since then and, as a result, I now use it a lot less often and buy a lot less from them (except for paper).

It's housed in a very large warehouse and is still good on supplies of paper (and canvases for painters) but appears to be increasingly oriented to art school students (ie popular and cheap).

Overall the ranges and number of items stocked have reduced over time (presumably because of competition from online sites?). It also suffers from odd gaps in the range of products stocked plus 'stock-outs' more frequently than I encounter elsewhere. Staff used to be good but are now not always so knowledgeable as they used to be.

I understand it used to have a good mail order business however the catalogue was badly out of date for a very long time. The current print catalogue is dated 2007 - but I don't remember ever seeing it in 2007!

What I find most odd is that their website is very awkwardly constructed and has always been devoted to showing pages from their mail order catelogue. The catalogue webpage is dated 2003 and comes with a 'health warning' on the front page about the prices being out of date!!! There is no online ordering process on offer except via e-mail.

Roberson started in 1810 in Long Acre in central London because of its proximity to the artistic quarter of London and to the home of the Royal Academy, in Somerset House. It moved to its present location in Holloway in 1987 and is now an independent company thriving as a trade-only supplier, supplying many of the products for which the company was famous in the past.

Roberson was one of the most important colourmen in London. Among its customers were artists such as Turner, Whistler and Sargent, designers such as William Morris, William de Morgan and Walter Crane and the royal and famous including Queen Victoria, Lady Randolph Churchill and Winston Churchill. The company prepared its own paints and manufactured a wide range of materials to recipes that were kept secret and actively protected. Some of these recipes are still used today.

"I remember the days when the fine art range was good and I could spend hours and hours in this shop before they relieved me of a large amount of cash. The range is now much reduced from what it was. It's very much a graphic design supplier now and it probably still caters quite well for volume demand from hobby artists and graphic designers using watercolours. The coloured pencil stock took a big hit when graphic designers went digital. Good range of portfolios, carry cases and technical equipment."

Getting to Newcastle Arts Centre is no problem! We're just around the corner from the Central Rail Station and the Metro. There are also three car parks within walking distance.

'details' is the art store of Newcastle Arts Centre Limited, which was founded as an Arts Development company in 1981. Since then it has brought back to use a group of 9 abandoned buildings in the City Centre and has provided home for dozens of arts related companies. The centre now has over 85,000 visitors a year and over 80,000 sales, making it one of the most active independent Art Centres in England.

If I ask if they have something, I usually get a shrug of the shoulders and a blank expression and no offer to help me see if they do have what I am looking for. I am sure it is not like that at all of the stores, but it does put me off of going there unless I need something quickly."
