Irises, Saint-Remy, c.1889Buy This at Allposters.com

In 1889, just one week after committing himself to the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Remy, France, Vincent Van Gogh began painting the Irises. While he thought it was just a study, Van Gogh's brother, Theo, wrote that this painting of the Irises "strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life."

The Irises were inspired by Japanese wood blocks, which can be seen in the use of the black contour lines in the painting.
