From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Venetian school (art) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- In the 15th century Venetian painting developed through influences from the Paduan School and Antonello da Messina, who introduced the oil painting technique of Early Netherlandish painting. It is typified by a warm colour scale and a picturesque use of colour. Among the leading early masters were the Bellini and Vivarini families, followed by Giorgione and Titian, then Tintoretto and Veronese. By about 1500 Venetian Renaissance painting was the most important school in Italy, along with that of Florence, and sought after by collectors across Europe.
- Giovanni Bellini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430-1516[1]) was an Italian Renaissance painter, probably the best known of the Bellini family of Venetian painters. His father was Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini, and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. He is considered to have revolutionized Venetian painting, moving it towards a more sensuous and colouristic style. Through the use of clear, slow-drying oil paints, Giovanni created deep, rich tints and detailed shadings. His sumptuous coloring and fluent, atmospheric landscapes had a great effect on the Venetian painting school, especially on his pupils Giorgione and Titian.
- Andrea Mantegna - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Andrea Mantegna (c. 1431 - September 13, 1506) was a North Italian Renaissance painter, a student of Roman archeology, and son in law of Jacopo Bellini. Like other artists of the time, Mantegna experimented with perspective, e.g., by lowering the horizon in order to create a sense of greater monumentality. His flinty, metallic landscapes and somewhat stony figures give evidence of a fundamentally sculptural approach to painting. He also led a workshop that was the leading producer of prints in Venice before 1500.
- Titian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488/1490[1] - 27 August 1576[2] better known as Titian (play /%u02C8t%u026A%u0283%u0259n/) was an Italian painter, the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno (in Veneto), in the Republic of Venice.
- Giorgione - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Giorgione (born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco; c. 1477/8 - 1510[1]) was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance in Venice. Giorgione is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are acknowledged for certain to be his work. The resulting uncertainty about the identity and meaning of his art has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European painting
Though he died at the young age of 33, Giorgione left a lasting legacy to be developed by Titian and 17th-century artists. Giorgione never subordinated line and colour to architecture, nor an artistic effect to a sentimental presentation. He was the first to paint landscapes with figures, the first to paint genre - movable pictures in their own frames with no devotional, allegorical, or historical purpose - and the first whose colours possessed that ardent, glowing, and melting intensity which was so soon to typify the work of all the Venetian School.
[edit] - Category:Venetian painters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The painters in this category are painters from the Venetian Republic (last doge abdicated in 1797). The majority are mentioned, if not featured in illustrations, in A Concise History of Venetian Painting by John Steer (Thames and Hudson, 1979, London).
- Canaletto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Giovanni Antonio Canal (28 October 1697 - 19 April 1768[1]) better known as Canaletto, was a Venetian painter famous for his landscapes, or vedute, of Venice. He was also an important printmaker in etching.
- The Renaissance in Venice - Art History Basics on the Venetian School - ca 1450-1600
- During the Renaissance Venice gave birth to a distinct school of painting. There was just something about the light there that begged to be captured on canvas.
Famous Artists who have painted Venice
There are those who 'poo poo' the notion of painting Venice - but it's been painted by an awful lot of rather good artists in the past...........
Venice: From Canaletto and Turner to Monet
Venice was truly a laboratory of perception in the nineteenth century, with its beguiling interplay of light, water, land and architecture. Of course, its fame as a muse for great artists goes further back, but the optical preoccupations of Impressionist and Neoimpressionist painters like Claude Monet and Paul Signac were especially suited to its singular virtues. Monet was inspired to create his famous Venice cycle in the autumn of 1908, and his Venetian paintings mark a turning point in his work as he embraced an increasingly abstract pictorial vocabulary.
It is therefore safe to say that Venice made a considerable, if rarely acknowledged, contribution to this chapter of art history, poised as it was on the threshold of Modernity.
This volume, filled with large-format color illustrations, is the first to provide a comprehensive examination of Venice's image in European and American painting of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the center of this well-informed exploration is Monet's aforementioned Venice cycle, supplemented by masterpieces by his predecessors and contemporaries, ranging from Canaletto to Turner to Signac.

This is a superb book produced by those highly renowned art book publishers Hatje Cantz. I like their books as they combine superb production values - in terms of the quality of reproductions - with authors whose narrative text is based on in-depth research and yet still remains readable - even in translation
I own this book and highly recommend it to anybody who loves Venice or any of the artists who have painted Venice.

- Oh my goodness, but our visit to Venice was one of those highlight memories of my life. It is hard to put it into words to express the great joy I felt there -- perhaps part of it was all the water that surrounds Venice? And, being a water sign? LOVED the fact that we also visited Murano and watched authentic glass blowing up close and personal. Nice presented!

- Don't know if you can help, but last night on The Travel Channel, Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" show featured Venice Italy, as non-tourists would see it. One part of the broadcast featured an English artist whose first name is Jeff. He has lived in Venice for 40 years and paints figures in either oils or acrylics. I wasn't able to catch his last name. I would like to view his work, and perhaps purchase one. If I could find out his last name I might be able to do so. Could you be of any help to me?
Thank you.
