Impressionism is defined as a style of painting developed in France during the 1870s which was based on producing a sensory impression rather than a realistic form. This was achieved by applying unmixed primary colors in small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.

Claude Monet is probably one of the most well-known impressionists of all time. In fact, it was said that his painting "Impression Sunrise" was responsible for naming the movement. Other great Impressionists include Edgar Degas, Mary Cassat, Pierre Auguste Renoir,, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, Frederic Bazille, Paul Cezanne and Edouard Manet.
