* the way people learn about art
* the nature of instruction available in art books and
* the economy of publishing. - Making a Mark: Art Books #2 - the economics of publishing

The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - see my book review
A revised and expanded edition of the classic drawing-instruction book that has sold more than 2,500,000 copies.
When Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was first published in 1979, it hit the New York Times bestseller list within two weeks and stayed there for more than a year. In 1989, when Dr. Betty Edwards revised the book, it went straight to the Times list again. On the twentieth anniversary of her classic book this new version was published - and has been selling steadily ever since.
The material was refined through hundreds of workshops and seminars. This edition includes:
* the very latest developments in brain research;
* new material on using drawing techniques in the corporate world and in education;
* instruction on self-expression through drawing;
* an updated section on using color; and
* detailed information on using the five basic skills of drawing for problem solving.

However it emphatically earns in my view a five pencil rating for those keen to develop their drawing skills beyond technically correct rendering and/or are interested in drawing in art history and/or those who just want to develop their drawing generally. FAVOURITE BOOKS about Acrylic Painting
The New Acrylics: Complete Guide to the New Generation of Acrylic Paints
The acrylics of today have grown into the most adaptable art material of the modern age. Focusing on a popular art medium that has been around for over 50 years, The New Acrylics illustrates how artists can create lush textures, colour, and lustre with the modern acrylics readily available in any art supply store. These are non-toxic, environmentally sound, and exist in the most dazzling array of chemical formats - from the most fluid to the highly viscous. Not only do artists paint with acrylics these days, they can create rich metallic effects, or even 3-Dimensional sculptures. Traditional technique based books on acrylics cover traditional methods of painting. However, The New Acrylics is geared towards more non-conventional ways in which to manipulate modern-day acrylics, and demonstrates new applications such as glazing, textured effects, soft sculpture effects, or staining, thus reinventing the old way of handling acrylics, and revealing a fabulous new artistic medium. The underlying theme of this dazzling and sophisticated book is to encourage artists to interpret and handle acrylic paints in a vibrant, fresh, and above all, individualistic style.

Capturing the Moment in Oils
One of the attractions of painting outdoors is the challenge of capturing the spirit of a place - changing light, weather and transient conditions demand particular painting skills if they are to be interpreted effectively.Leading painter David Curtis works on location, in all weathers, observing and capturing the subtle effects of light and mood. Oil paint is as good for painting on site as it is for large-scale painting in the studio; it is remarkably responsive; can be applied in many different ways; and it allows time to assess and modify work in progress.In this fascinating book, David Curtis shows how he achieves such expressive and original results using drawings, paintings and stage-by-stage examples.
He gives detailed explanations of his two main working methods - for plein-air paintings and for studio compositions - as well as plenty of helpful guidance and advice on choosing materials, exploring techniques, selecting ideas, composition, colour and tone and associated topics. Drawing skills and interpreting the qualities of light are other key issues that he deals with, while his wonderfully evocative landscapes, coastal scenes, interiors and figure compositions provide much to inspire the reader.

- Kathryn - Somehow I missed your post requesting book ideas, but hope these are not too late... Please get in touch if you need more information on any of these books.
I was taught (Art Course as part of Teacher Training) by the artist and illustrator of (in particular childrens') books, Doreen Roberts. Recently I discovered she wrote two instructional books which I bought and in whichI recognise much of the material we were taught at college in them:
Doreen Roberts - Drawing Workshop - Pub: Harper Collins
Doreen Roberts - Painting Workshop - Pub: Harper Collins
(not sure if they are still in print but both come up for sale on eBay, which is where I bought them
A brilliant book about colour with a fantastic colour wheel - if you buy one secondhand do make sure the colour wheel is still there!
Stephen Quiller - Color Choices - Pub: Watson Guptill
... more information follows as I have run out of permitted space!
