Getting started on ArtByUs.com

A short tutorial on the basics

First you will need to register with ArtByUs.com - click on the register link, fill out the information, wait for the confirmation email, click on the link in that email to confirm your registration. If you register with a free "unverifiable" email address (such as hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc), your registration will be put on hold until we manually approve your registration.

To start selling, click the "sell" link in the top menu.
Select a category for your work to be listed in, add your item specific information, such as pricing, size, shipping info, etc..
Upload or link to your images - make sure you have excellent digital pictures of your work - Buyers need to know what they will be purchasing, since they cannot touch it or see it up close.
Keep your images to under 200k - that is about 600x600 pixels at 72 dpi, jpg or gif format.

Below are some helpful links for creating your own html auction templates, hosting your images, etc.
To gain extra exposure for your auctions, you can use the optional feature plus gadget ($9.95 per auction) - it will put your auction at the top of the page within the category and for a limited time on the front page, as well as randomly in the featured section of the homepage.

Invite your collectors to your auctions using some of our tools - add your auction to your favorite social bookmarking sites, send out e-card promotions, add rss feeds to your site, etc.

Tips and Tricks

Valuable tips to make selling on ArtByUs.com even more exhiliarating.
  • The ArtByUs.com Art Blog is where you can find interesting news, tidbits, and even post your own or comment on the posts already there.
You can also add it as an RSS feed to your own site...
  • For maximum effectiveness of your Feature Plus fees, use the 60 day listing - more time, same price - only $9.95!
  • Use caution when using auto relist in combination with Feature Plus or bold - when your auction relists, it will also re-charge the fees! And they are non-refundable - so consider that before approving your Feature Plus auctions.
  • Good images are VERY important when selling online - make sure they are clear, straight, well lit, and if possible true to real life color of the original. Closeups are an excellent way to show the buyer what they want to know - brushstrokes, signatures, details, damages, all the little things that the buyer would like to notice if they were looking at your artwork in real life.
  • Take a moment to write a concise, detailed description for your item - it builds confidence in your work, and lets your buyer know what they are looking at.
  • Add a short comment on what inspired your artwork, location created at, comments from previous buyers, significant information about the piece, etc.
It will give the buyers a personal connection to your work.
  • Your Seller's Gallery page is your very own online art gallery/auction page - this is where you can really ring the bells about your work.
Add your Bio, pictures of yourself, links to your website, your views on life in general, etc.
Your Seller's Gallery contains a list of all your current auctions.
  • With the ArtByUs.com Seller's Kit you can add your auctions (or those from other sellers) to your website. Just download it from the Resources area on ArtByUs.com, and paste the html code into your website code.
It is customizable so you can match the colors to your site's design.
  • To gain extra exposure for your work, add your listings to your social bookmarking pages, such as stumbleupon, digg, mister wong, del.icio.us, furl, kaboodle, spurl, etc. - and make sure your friends know you're artwork is online at ArtByUs.com.
  • Use the free e-cards from your auction to mail your auction to your mailing list.
Go to my artbyus > i'm selling and check the auction you want to promote, then click the promote button.
You can enter up to 100 email addresses at once...a great way to notify your collectors of your new auctions!
  • Price your work realistically - not too cheap, not too expensive.
Chances are, buyers will buy if the price is right for the work offered. If you are asking a lot less than your work is worth, you will devalue your work - If you ask a lot more more than it is worth, people won't buy.
Since you will not be competing with cheap import reproductions on ArtByUs.com, you do not need to lower your standards on your prices either to fit in.
  • Make sure to add your artist name to your auctions in the "artist name" field - if somebody searches the site for your artist name, it will pull that auction up, but only if it is there...
  • When sending out your newsletter to your buyer base, make sure you add the link to your ArtByUs.com gallers - it's the place where you can showcase all your listings without distractions to your buyers.

Find out about the newest trends, technologies and developments in the creative world - and perhaps find some inspiration and "aha!" effects to build your art career at the same time...
USATODAY.com - Artists take paintings to masses
A phenomenon is breathing a breath of fresh air into the artworld of stuffy galleries and snobbish art dealers: artists that are taking matters into their own hands to create a marketplace that works FOR them, not against them, by changing the way they create and the way they connect their artwork with buyers.

One of those connectors is ArtByUs.com, where buyers connect directly with the artists to purchase real art, not cheap machine made prints or sweatshop productions from far east.

Maria Puente of USAToday has written an article, explaining the basis and idea behind the artists new found freedom.
