Art Garfunkel -- Voice Of An Angel

Art Garfunkel's voice is his instrument and one of his most recognizable features.

"Art Garfunkel is one of those great, rare voices," James Taylor wrote in Rolling Stone Magazine. "I would know it anywhere at the drop of a hat, in half a bar."

"To sing with Art Garfunkel is a very intimidating experience, because his voice is a wonderful gift and I always considered that my job was to surround it with some harmony and let it shine." - Paul Simon.

Singer, Actor, Reader, Walker, Writer -- Art Garfunkel has certainly left his mark in history.

Simon and Garfunkel

As one half of the "folk rock" duo Simon & Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel released a string of hits from 1965 to 1970 with his childhood friend, Paul Simon, which helped land them at #40 of Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

They've also received several Grammys and are inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

"They were fabulous years," Art remembers warmly. "I'll always be happy to say a little on behalf of the duo. I'm proud of singing those great songs. Now they teach Paul Simon songs in churches and schools as part of the curricula... it seems that part of good citizenship is the knowledge of the songs we did. How can I grasp that?" (From the Art Garfunkel Bio page)

Art Garfunkel The Actor

Art Garfunkel worked with director Mike Nichols when Simon & Garfunkel recorded the soundtrack for his movie The Graduate, this lead to the start of Garfunkel's movie career with roles in Nichols' next two films, Catch-22 and Carnal Knowledge.

More recently he appeared in two episodes of the TV series American Dreams and in the movie The Rebound.

Art Garfunkel's Filmography

Art Garfunkel The Solo Artist

In 1973, Art released his debut solo album, Angel Clare, which included two hit singles, All I know and I Shall Sing.

"Acting was just a diversion. I've always felt committed to music; I love to sing." - Art Garfunkel.

Art has continued to release music through the end of the 1970's, including a hit version of I Only Have Eyes for You from Breakaway in 1975. On that album he also reunited with Paul Simon for the recording of the song My Little Town.

In 1975 he also performed live with Paul at the CBS convention in Toronto, Canada in July, on the TV program Saturday Night Live in October, and at New York's Avery Fisher Hall in November.

In 1978, Art released not just his third solo album, but his third consecutive gold album, Watermark which featured songs all written by Jimmy Webb with the exception of Sam Cooke's "(What a) Wonderful World" sung by Art, Paul Simon and James Taylor.

Bright Eyes became the biggest selling single of 1979 in the UK when it was released from the Fate For Breakfast album. The song didn't even crack the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, it was released as a single, but wasn't on the original American version of the album.

Following his disappointing 1981 release, Scissors Cut, Art rejoined Paul Simon for the hugely successful Concert in Central Park. A world tour followed the concert, but the partnership wasn't able to last after the tour.

Art Garfunkel The Walker

After the 1980's break up of Simone & Garfunkel, Art started to become known for his obsession with long-distance walking. Beginning with a three week hike across the rice paddies and back roads of Japan in '82.

Art sang background on Crosby, Stills & Nash's Daylight Again in 1982, and on Christopher Cross' Another Page in '83.

In 1984 his walk across America began as he started in New York and walked about 100 miles. Periodically, he would make these trips, returning to where he left off, and continue to walk further across the country.

In '85 he recorded Jimmy Webb's The Animals' Christmas with Amy Grant, based a Cantata Webb mostly composed of his own original songs, which Art had originally performed at New York's St. John the Divine Cathedral and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

In 1988, he returned to his solo work with the release of the album, Lefty which didn't sell well, but lead to his first solo tour since 1978. He also sang Bridge Over Troubled Water during a command performance before Prince Charles and Princess Diana at the Prince's Trust concert. He also married actress and singer Kathryn (Kim) Cermak.

In 1989, his first book of prose poetry, Still Water was released. He had begun writing his poems in 1981 when he realized that he had a real talent for writing. The book is a collection of autobiographical prose poems that explore a wide range of feelings from his early career with Paul Simon, through the depths of despair brought on by tragic death of his girlfriend, Laurie Bird in 1980 on to his marriage to Kim Cermak and the pleasures of falling in love again.

Art's Walk Across America continued as he made his way from Noble, Illinois to Garland, Nebraska in 1989, traveled to Scotia, Nebraska in 1990 and South Dakota and Montana in 1991.

In 1993, Art released Up 'Til Now and a article featured in an issue of The New Yorker magazine focused on Art's "Walk" as he described it's progress to date from New York City, through nine years of on again, off again walking.

After Having completed his walk across the United States in 1996, a documentary-style video that chronicled Art's 12-year walk as well as a celebratory concert at the Registry Hall on Ellis Island and was released as Across America featuring musical guest James Taylor, Garfunkel's wife, Kim, and his son James.

Art Garfunkel The Reader

Do you like to read? Art does.

Not only does he have a list of his favorite books, but he's also put together a list of every book he's read since 1968!

Art Garfunkel Songwriter

In 2003, Art debuted as a song writer with the release of Everything Waits to Be Noticed, and Simon & Garfunkel reformed for another successful world tour that was extended into 2004 and made possible the release of Simon & Garfunkel - Old Friends, Live on Stage.

Art's most recent album is Some Enchanted Evening released in 2007. In late February 2007 during a German television interview to promote the new album, he expressed interest in reuniting with Paul Simon on a new Simon & Garfunkel album.

In 2009, Garfunkel appeared as himself on the HBO television show "Flight of the Conchords" episode entitled "Prime Minister." He and Paul Simon are touring New Zealand, Australia and Japan in 2009.

The Graduate (40th Anniversary Collector's Edition) (1967)

Few films have defined a generation as The Graduate did. The alienation, the nonconformity, the intergenerational romance, the blissful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack--they all served to lob a cultural grenade smack into the middle of 1967 America, ultimately making the film the third most profitable up to that time.

Seen from a later perspective, its radical chicness has dimmed a bit, yet it's still a joy to see Dustin Hoffman's bemused Benjamin and Anne Bancroft's deliciously decadent, sardonic Mrs. Robinson.

The script by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham is still offbeat and dryly funny, and Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for his direction, has just the right, light touch. --Anne Hurley

Nominated for seven Academy Awards and winner for Best Director, this ground breaking and "wildly hilarious" (The Boston Globe) social satire launched the career of two-time Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman and cemented the reputation of acclaimed director Mike Nichols.

Pulsating with the rebellious spirit of the '60s and a haunting score sung by Simon and Garfunkel, The Graduate is truly a "landmark film" (Leonard Maltin).

Shy Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) returns home from college with an uncertain future. Then the wife of his father's business partner, the sexy Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), seduces him, and the affair only deepens his confusion.

That is, until he meets the girl of his dreams (Katharine Ross). But there's one problem: she's Mrs. Robinson's daughter!

Catch-22 (1970)

Joseph Heller's novel was one of the seminal literary events of the 1960s, but Mike Nichols's film ultimately proved too literal in its attempt to bring Heller's fragmented fiction to the screen. Still, Nichols, who made this on the heels of The Graduate, seemed the ideal candidate to tackle this Buck Henry adaptation.

The story deals with bomber pilot Yossarian (Alan Arkin), who has flown enough missions to get out of World War II but can't because the number of missions needed for discharge keeps getting raised.

The satire and absurdity of Heller's book get lost in Nichols's effort to give screen time to the members of his all-star cast, which includes Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Richard Benjamin, and Martin Sheen, among others. --Marshall Fine

One of the most controversial movies of its time, this "thought-provoking" (Leonard Maltin) comedy-drama from legendary director Mike Nichols (The Birdcage) is a funny, poignant look at relationships as seen through the eyes of two friends over a 20-year period.

Superbly crafted by playwright Jules Feiffer, Carnal Knowledge is brimming with touching insights, sexy banter and powerful performances by three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson*, Ann-Margaret, Candice Bergen and pop music icon Arthur Garfunkel.

Jonathan (Nicholson) and Sandy (Garfunkel) are college roommates who share an endless fascination and obsession with women. As time goes by, their relentless pursuit for the joys of the flesh becomes more competitive...and more damaging.

Soon, Jonathan and Sandy's lives become a vicious circle of girls, booze and unfulfillment, and they realize only too late that in the war of the sexes they are their own worst enemy.

American Dreams - Season One (Extended Music Edition) (2002)

American Dreams - Season One (Extended Music Edition)

Amazon Price: $17.99 (as of 07/14/2009)Buy Now
List Price: $26.98

The 2002 first season of American Dreams introduced one of the more ambitious new dramas on a major television network since the debut of The West Wing. Deceptively nostalgic, American Dreams looks, at first blush, like a bone tossed to baby boomers who remember black and white TV, American Bandstand, and what class they were in when word spread of JFK's assassination.

But the more one watches the show, the more apparent it becomes that American Dreams is not about memories but about bringing a pivotal chapter in 20th century U.S. history to life--sometimes electrifyingly so.

The series pilot, set just before and on the day of Kennedy's murder, introduces Philadelphia family the Pryors, white, middle-class Catholics whose stern but not undiscerning patriarch, Jack (Tom Verica), gets an earful one night over dinner.

Eldest son J.J. (Will Estes), a star running back at high school and candidate for a Notre Dame football scholarship, announces he's leaving the sport, feeling unappreciated for his mind and inspired by Kennedy's outreach to young people.

Teenage daughter Meg (Brittany Snow) allows that she'll be dancing on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

Jack's wife, Helen (Gail O'Grady), later lets fly that she's moving on from her boring book club to spend time with a new friend, a feminist academic (Virginia Madsen), and strongly hints that she's done with adding more babies to their brood of four.

The times are indeed a-changin' for the Pryors--who have chugged along on WWII vet Jack's fiercely protected vision of picket fences, cooperative kids, and a wife who doesn't upset his equilibrium with needs of her own.

But the rest of the country is changing, too, and American Dreams captures--with subtle precision--the erosion of comfortable assumptions at the onset of the Vietnam war, the escalation of the civil rights movement, the British Invasion, reproductive rights for women, and much else.

The series flows, often with stylish splendor, between the Pryors' home, the Bandstand studio set, and Jack's retail television and radio shop, where Jack's sole employee, an African American father, Henry (Jonathan Adams), wonders silently about the options a racist society will offer his talented son, Sam (Arlen Escarpeta).

Wordlessness is a hallmark of American Dreams: An exchanged look between Meg and Sam is shattering testimony to the confusion of racial prohibitions among well-meaning kids.

Part of every show finds historical reenactments of '60s musical acts appearing on Bandstand, and sometimes these artists are played by contemporary musicians such as Nick Carter (as Jay of Jay and the Americans) and Third Eye Blind (as the Kinks).

This boxed set includes real Bandstand clips that are contemporaneous with the series' timeline. --Tom Keogh

Simon and Garfunkel - The Concert in Central Park

Amazon Price: $9.98 (as of 07/14/2009)Buy Now
List Price: $9.98

What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)

Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch.

The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell

Up 'Til Now

Garfunkel's single-CD album, Up 'Til Now, is a very peculiar compilation. It doesn't include any of his six Top 40 hits as a solo artist; in fact, it only includes two songs from his previous solo albums.

It does include "The Breakup," and 1964's original all-acoustic version of "The Sound of Silence" before a folk-rock rhythm section was added to turn it into a hit. It also includes his theme song for the CBS-TV series "Brooklyn Bridge" and his lovely version of Hoagy Carmichael & Frank Loesser's "Two Sleepy People" for the soundtrack album of A League of Their Own.

It's strictly MOR (Middle Of the Road), but Garfunkel lends this much-maligned genre an elegance largely missing from the work of such MOR stars as Barry Manilow, Bette Midler, Harry Connick Jr., and Liza Minnelli. Those other singers strain to oversell their modest material, while Garfunkel has the good grace to understate his vocals and allow the frothy sentiments to float atop his purring melodies. And that makes all the difference. --Geoffrey Himes

So I'm here and listening all songs you have listed here... And thinking to myself - I'll add them to my lens 'My Musical Retreat'... But which song??? I love them all! :) As soon as I decide, I'll feature your lens under 'to find out more...'! :)

Art Garfunkel is the silent hero of the two! A friend of mine, who is a teacher in New Jersey, told me that after he split from Simon, he went back to teaching math in a Greenich Village high school! I haven't checked it, but I love it!

5*

A great lens. And thanks for putting my lens of 1970 on your lens. It was a surprise to see that.

This is cool story. Back in 1992-1993 I saw Art walking through Vanceburg, Kentucky. He had a back pack and that was it. I would have stopped to talk to him but I was in a truck and working at the time.

Bright Eyes is one of my favorites of his solo efforts. It's a pity the song wasn't as successful in the US as it was in the UK. Very nice lens!
