Arthur Hughes (British, 1832-1915)
The London born Arthur Hughes studied at the Somerset House School under Alfred Stevens and later at the Royal Academy Schools were he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt. Together Hughes and Rossetti helped create the mural of the Oxford Union.

Hughes became influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite ideals as a result of reading their briefly published magazine, The Germ, which was introduced to him by fellow School of Painting sculptor, Alexander Munro. He would become one of the second generation Pre-Raphaelites along with Edward Burne-Jones and John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope.

At one point in his painting career Hughes would experiment with painting by candle and lantern light after being effected by William Holman Hunt's Light of the World, for which Hunt had spent months sleeping by day and painting outdoors at night to capture correct lighting and shadow.

The subject of Hughes paintings was primarily love following the themes of the Brotherhood, such as April Love, which was inspired by Alfred Tennyson's poem The Miller's Daughter, though he retired in 1858 the Brotherhood's sessions. He also illustrated many books several of which were children's stories of nursery rhymes and fairy tales. His brilliant use of color made him one of the more outstanding artists of this genre.
