With a Child's Eyes...
Although I've seen much of Arthur's artwork, I know nothing about this man. What an enchanting life he must have lead. Arthur Rackham was an illustrator of many children's books, including Peter Pan, Rip van Winkle, and Alice in Wonderland. All of his illustrations have succeeded in capturing our young imaginations. Even now, when I see his work from Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, it sparks the imagination. So, sit back and relax. Summon up that child you shut away so long ago, and allow me to introduce you to Arthur Rackham.

Through the Looking Glass

One of twelve children, Arthur was born in London in 1867. At eighteen he became a clerk, and by twenty-five, he was a full time artist. His early work showed very little promise, nothing of what was to come. In 1893, his first book illustrations were published. Nothing like what you see before you now, and gaining no fame from the publication. His illustrations in Bletherwitch and Zankiwank in 1896, started him on the right path. It was much more fun and childlike in comparison.
At last, in 1905 the work in Rip van Winkle made heads turn. Rackham began publishing beautifully illustrated books in limited edition bound in vellum, signed, and some had color plates. Something not found in the trade editions.
Rip van Winkle was at the top of an impressive list from there. In 1906, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland in 1907, in 1937 A Midsummer Night's Dream, among many others.
Rockham won gold medals at at the Milan International Exhibition, and the Barcelona International Exposition. And in 1914 his work was included in an exhibition at the Louvre.
"For children in their most impressionable years, there is, in fantasy, the highest of stimulating and educational powers."
