Article Marketing for Profit

Build Online Income: No Advertising Costs

Articles for bum marketing (Travis Sago & his wife named this method bum marketing) should be between 300 and 500 words each. This is not to say that articles cannot be more than 500 words (EzineArticles cuts you off at 2500), but you should attempt to write as close to 500 words as possible. There are many reasons for this, but two of the most important reasons are:
  1. People tend not to read extremely long articles online;
  2. more articles equals more views equals more clickthroughs equals more income.
So what do you write about? Are you in college? Do you still have your old college papers stuffed in a drawer somewhere? If so, you have some ready made articles you could submit. You might have to tweak them a bit, but if you can locate a product that goes along with the topics you have previously written about, you have a ready resource. Even if not, you can put out articles that link to your Web site. One of the articles I get the most views from is a paper I wrote for an English class on how I quit smoking. Now, if I was smart, I would:
  • Create a quit smoking site
  • Link to it from the article
  • Start promoting a clickbank product on how to quit smoking.
At the time I submitted the article to EzineArticles, I had not learned enough to know I needed to do this. It is on my list of ToDos, now.

Have an interest? Cooking, woodworking, motorcycles, sewing? Whatever the interest, there is something out there that you can promote through writing articles about that interest. If you can't find a product in ClickBank, check out Web sites and see if you can find affiliate programs. It is very unlikely that you will get rich quick using article marketing, but it is not a scheme and over time can make you a substantial income. Or, create your own product such as an e-book or special report about your interests.

So Just How Do You Do Bum Marketing?

Basically, bum marketing follows this path:
  • Research to find a long-tail keyword (a keyword phrase made up of two or more words) that has between 500 and 1000 searches each day.
  • Find a product that fits that market.
  • Write 30 or more articles about that product, with a link in the bio/signature section to the site that sells that product (see below for more information).
  • Start over and do it again--over and over and over again!
Be careful to watch the terms of service and writer's guidelines of the ezine publisher. Some, such as EzineArticles, will not allow a direct affiliate link in the bio/signature. Others not only allow them in the bio/signature, they allow them in the actual article. Make sure you follow these rules. If you don't, your article will not be approved.

Depending on how the terms of service and writer's guidelines are worded, you may be able to direct link to the site that sells the item with an affiliate link. If not, you will need to create a landing page or Squidoo page to which you link your articles. Landing pages are simple, usually one page, Web sites. The landing page or Squidoo page will then have links to the actual site where the item or article is sold.
