Know your Article Directories and make the most out of them

Article Directories

The Basics

So what are the one's that you need to target - Well, here are a few tips.

Ezinearticles.com - This is the most prominent directory and probably the best if what you want is high quality links. The submission can take over a week though so don't expect overnight success and the links per article are maximum of 4 including the resource box so know this before you "overlink".

Goarticles.com - This is the fastest submission directory and the voting process is quite active, so you could end up with a front page link if your article is well received, which could lead to widespread publication.

Article Flame - This directory is one where you write for them and receive profits in an unusual and interesting residual plan. I am a contributing writer there and very much enjoy the process. This particular article directory doesn't allow you to add links other than to internal pages. This means for seo this is no good, but if you want to make some great income as a writer it is the best system on the internet.

There are other options, but if you stick to these three I'd consider that a safe and smart move

A Lifetime Of Quality Content

Article Directories Have It All

If you are searching for a "how to" or "10 ways" style subject hen the chances are that you will find the top results are all article directory pages. It's no wonder, because combined amongst them all are hundreds of thousands of articles.

The fact that these articles are so readily accessible means they offer such a convenient resource to readers and researchers alike.

Over the lifespan of a blogger, he or she could have written upwards of ten thousand articles and that's just one person's mark on the world. Of course not everyone is cut out to be a hard core writer and be prepared to stick through the rigors of internet marketing and the like.

If you are already a blogger, or you're about to embark on the wonderful, recently new style of income generation, then no doubt you'll be seeing the inside of quite a few article directories in the weeks, months and years to come.

Article Directory Submissions

Do you mass submit?

It's an interesting question and it's definitely one I've thought long and hard about.

Is it really advantageous to submit one article to 200 different directories and get a ton of backlinks, but dilute the value of your initial link?

Here's A Theory

I've heard this posited by some intelligent people, so I thought I'd place it here for your consideration.

If you have an article at a high PR site like Ezinearticles and you get links and traffic to that site, then your specific page will get great page rank, however if you were to the submit that same article to a myriad of other directories - It will dilute the value of your initial link.

I believe that if this is not already happening now that it will happen very soon as the SE's sharpen their defenses to this kind of shortcut taking.

At the end of the day, your average web surfer isn't pleased about getting the same article 4 or 5 times in the search engine results.

Protecting Your Work

Let's face it - If you submit your article to 500 different directories, then it's a bit rich to complain when you find someone publishing it with out your bio box or an acknowledgment to you.

I mean where was your high level of integrity in the first place - You wanted links and you probably got them. However that isn't to say that someone reproducing your article isn't wrong - They are!

The thing to remember is that if you put enough work out there, then some of it will be stolen. I had a case where a guy ripped of my article in it's entirety - he made no modifications to even try and pass copyscape. The problem was that he ripped out my bio and put his in and to add insult to injury he had about 50 comments telling him what a great article he had wrote - I was fuming.

I guess I could have contacted his directory host or done something, but I spent my time writing instead.

You can plead copyright infringement if you please but there is usually little point. Nothing really happens other than more loss of your precious time.

Here's one way of looking at it - If you haven't had any content stolen then you're not working hard enough.

Anyway, the more you write and the more links you have - the more chance you will be plagiarized.

If you want to see if your work has been duplicated then type the heading into the search engine and view the results of articles with the same heading, chances are you may find your own one somewhere you never thought you would.

For The Hardcore Blistered Finger Writers

Just how many articles can a pro churn out in a day if he or she puts their mind to work?

I believe burn out would play a factor eventually, but if that wasn't in the picture then I believe a good typist, who is quick to form ideas and is a seasoned professional could make 6 an hour. That's one every ten minutes.

In an eight hour day that would be 48 - That's more than some people write in a year...seriously.

Imagine putting out 300 articles in a week - Yikes, but in the same thought, imagine the web presence you could have.

How about 1000 a month? - Are you getting the picture?

The Big Picture

The overwhelming majority of intelligent online marketers would agree that if your not making the absolute most out of article marketing then you are seriously missing out and missing the point.

Submitting to article directories is the best, surefire way to get a healthy, high PR backlink over and over again. In fact it is the single best thing you can do.

Social Bookmarking

The social bookmarking revolution changed a lot of things and now, still a lot of webmaster spend time trying to get an easy link for a quick bookmark submission. The fact remains that social bookmark links are not as valuable as they once were and you just can't go past writing articles for directories and submitting them.

The Best Method

If you could only do one thing to get traffic and backlinks to your site, it would have to be article marketing. In fact there are those webmasters who only use article marketing and don't bother with the other methods. They get very good at what they do and build a ton of high pr links, not to mention the have a real internet presence that gets them following in itself.

Having that many unique articles out there in cyberspace can really leverage your position as an affiliate and an authority.

Enough Talk - More Writing

The work-work-work method gets the job done. If you spend every waking minute of your spare time writing articles for the directories then it is only a matter of time before you gain some degree of success. If you write 15 articles a day and build 15 backlinks as well then in 1 year you could have 5000 article and 5000 backlinks.

This is the time when you can't help but have some success. In fact if you're even faster you could easily double that.

I build at least 10 links a day and I write 15-20 articles. It's a matter of using your time to achieve something of value.

What will you do with your time.

To Non De Plume Or Not

Pen Names - Yes or No?

If you use a pen name then there is a chance that you're missing out on brand building your own name in the market place. Some authors use 3 or 4 pen names and they like the freedom it gives them to be an expert on several subjects.

I'm not sure whether this is a great idea as you may stretch yourself thin trying to hog too many niches or too many topics.

It's not a bad idea, when you are known for a particular subject and you use a pen name because you want to try your hand at a new topic and rightly or wrongly you don't want the credit attributed to you in case it impacts badly on your brand - Say if the subject doesn't go down too well.

Stick To One Name

I suggest you make the most out of your opportunity to brand your own name and get known in the article directories as an authority.

Only use a pen name when you are worried about the quality of an article and don't want the credit.

Fire It Up

Fan The Flames Of Creation

Once you've been around the writing block a few times, you'll probably learn to write faster and thoughts and facts will come to you easier. This will make the production of articles a lot more simple to perform.

Initially though there may be times when you are stuck for words and suffer from the dreaded "writers block" - There's just no need for it.

Anyone can browse the internet nowadays and find a lot of useful info. All you have to do to get those creative juices flowing is to bang on the doors of a few well articulated articles and find a subject you are really comfortable about writing.

The best thing you can do is to revert to the topic you know the most about - This usually leads to a stream of ideas that can have a nice flow on effect into other subjects.

The more you write the better you should become.

PR Counts But So Does Your Intuiton

Don't ever forget that although some of the big Directories have great Page rank, some of the little directories are growing and are becoming renowned for their quality.

As these directories grow their page rank will also increase, so your article could be one with a nice age and a high pr eventually.

it can some time mean you have to be intuitive and give these smaller directories an entry - Remember a diverse array of links is better than 25 from one single directory.

Be judicious, but also use your subjectivity.

Is PR The Be All End All

Be Informative

The more quality information you can provide the readers, the more you will seem to be the authority on a given subject.

Being an authority is exactly what you want to be.

With authority comes repeat viewers and fans. Once these people follow your opinions and look to you for answers, you can build your list and suggest genuine products of interest and make money as an affiliate.

Of course you have to do the hard yards first. Making a great article full of useful content will take time. This article you are reading right now is a constant work in progress as I share more and more of what I learn and build an extremely useful resource.

It counts to be useful.

Giving people the information they want not only does all the things I talked about above, but it also helps build rapport and trust.

When I find a writer who knows their stuff I am usually a pretty loyal follower of their blog.

I also find that I have some really great contributors who follow my own work, so I don't want to let them down.

Do the work and be informative

Get Them Indexed

If you've written an article and submitted it to a directory, or perhaps you've written several, then you really want them to get indexed.

If they don't get indexed then the Search Engines don't know they exist and they won't give you the backlinks for them.

All that work for nothing?

It doesn't have to be - Here's a suggestion:

For every article you write - Submit it to a couple of social bookmarking sites and maybe a couple of pligg sites.

By bookmarking them you might get them indexed via those links or just the keywords in the articles, but either way - You want those articles indexed.

Once when I was but a young and foolish newbie, I had written probably 30-40 articles on one directory and not one of them had been indexed, so I submitted each article to a social bookmarker, well about 20 social bookmarkers and within a week 85% of the articles were indexed.

That's a lot of backlinks and article writting to missing out on!

Find A Niche Directory

If you want to get your hands on some tasty, relevant links then one of your best bets is to hunt down a niche directory on the subject of your liking.

Google loves relevant linking, so if you can find a specialist directory on the topic that you are writing about then it's a little bit of "bingo" and a lot of "alright".

A niche directory will usually have quite a bit of weight with the SE's in their field of chosen information and this can be excellent for you if you're looking to get hold of some relevant links from a similar site.

It's hard to say just how much a link from a relevant site is worth, but I think that it is always going to above that of, say a general directory - right?

So try to find a niche directory for every little article you add to your sites and submit some good content - You'll be glad you did.

Link Boost Your Submissions

Get Better Links Out Of Your Submissions

Now, we know that submitting a link to a PR 7 article directory is good, but that doesn't mean the page you submit will have a high PR.

There are 800 word articles on high PR directories that are pr 1 or pr 0 - A lot of effort for an average link.

But, here's the thing - Because a directory is high PR, if you can get a couple of links to an article that you submitted then you can make that page a high PR linked page.

A savvy marketer could get 50-100 links to an article in 3-4 hours. You could get your PR value up to 5-6 and have 2-3 links from a PR 5 page.

It could cost you $150 to buy that sort of value linkage.

If you've got the time, then make the effort and authoritize your articles by building links to them.

Make the most out of your best submissions.

Spread It Wide

Diversify

In order for Google to take you seriously, you need to have a wide range of links to your website. If you have 1000 links coming from only 10-15 different sites then you may look like a spammer.

Google likes to see a number of inbound links to your site coming from a number of VARIOUS places.

If you don't submit articles to a variety of directories, then it may seem unnatural(spammy) and then Google may earmark you as dubious.

Like I have stated before, it is ok to dominate a directory to become a Top Contributor and reap those benefits, but you must add some other articles here and there, to other article directories.

Spread your efforts far and wide.

Top 5 Article Directory Submission Mistakes

Don't Make These Mistakes - Make Your Life Easier

  • 5 Typing Errors

4 Short Submission (350 words or less)

3 Poor Key Words - No one cares about blue shelled African pygmy snails

2 Incoherence - Keep it together and keep it interesting

    1 S.P.A.M - Don't submit crappola, please, really?

Obey The Rules

They're There For A Reason

To keep PR and a clean respectable resource, the article directories maintain certain standards which are really of benefit to the authors as much themselves.

Submission limits, spelling standards and spam reduction type rules, all help to keep the directory somewhere that authors can get good backlinks from.

For a second, just think about how the article directories would benefit "Genuine Writers" if they were littered with spam, multi linked pages and spelling errors en masse?

They wouldn't be something any quality webmaster would want to associate their work with and the backlinks would be near worthless.

There's no point complaining about minimum word counts and the like - If you don't like it then hunt down a lesser directory.

The amount of backlinks you can get from the directories is enormous so be grateful that they are what they are and obey the rules.

The Future Or Article Marketing

So, we don't have a crystal ball, but we can hazard a guess as to how the future of article marketing and directories are going to play out.

1. Votes will matter - Articles that are voted for the most will make a comeback as the systems become more trustworthy. This means that exceptionally high quality articles (like this one) will be worth while.

2. Spin will die - Google will be able to sense an article that has even been remotely tweaked, let alone spun. All spun versions incur penalties!

Unique Content

What is the point Of unique content?

Consider this every time you spin an article, you end up with the same key words and the same phrases albeit jumbled up, they are for the most part very similar.

NOW

When you write unique content, even rewrite content, you end up with many new combinations of words and fresh juicy new keywords. Long tail keywords that you may not even have thought about.

Long tail keywords are a great way to get brand new traffic and attract new readers to your articles.

Spun content will get you backlinks, but very rarely will be valuable enough to invite new traffic via the article itself.

Unique Content Rules!
