Why Does Article Marketing Work?

Correct Use Of An Author Resource Box

Why is article marketing, or article promotion, one of the most effective ways to drive traffic to your website?

Lesson #1 - Never, ever forget... the Internet is the "Information Highway". When someone uses the Internet... they are purely and simply looking for information.

Sure, eventually that person may buy something - but before they make a buying decision - they need gain information!

A clever marketer or business person, will supply them with the information they are looking for. You can does this simply by writing highly targeted, informative, maybe entertaining articles. These articles are then freely distributed throughout the Internet.

When you distribute your articles throughout the Internet, you will generally be adding them to sites that are considered 'high authority' sites within the Search Engines. A 'high authority' site is one that is content rich and updated regularly.... Squidoo is considered a high authority site, as is EZine Articles. There are two main benefits to these sites:

  1. They rank really highly in Search Engine results.... normally on Page 1 of the results and, it's not unusual for your articles on these sites to rank more highly than your site for a while
  2. They aren't considered by visitors to be 'sales sites'.... so someone searching for information is more likely to click on an article link, then they are on a link that looks like it goes to a sales page...
I can hear you all asking now - 'But how does that get traffic to my site?'...
By adding a correcty formatted 'Author Resource Box' to your articles. The AuthResource Box will look something like:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About The Author: Your Name is a cooking enthusiast and self proclaimed romantic. His website at http://www.mywebsite.com offers simple yet delicious recipes for creating the perfect meal on a fixed budget. David's Free E-course "Cookie Cutter Cooking" is jam packed with tips and techniques for the cooking enthusiast. Subscribe for FREE by sending a blank email to: mailto:cooking@myautoresponder.com or at http://www.mywebsite.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By using the Author Resource Box correctly, you are able to credential yourself as an authority in the area and profile your website as a place to gather more information, or even buy the products or services being investigated.

It really is that simple -- no secret strategies, no hidden traps. Writing informative articles, targetted at a specific piece of information will help you drive traffic to your site and may well become a viral marketing tool for years to come.

Use Article Marketing To Your Benefit

Article Titles - Ensure People Read Your Articles

The first 3-5 words of your TITLE
determine the success of your article.

These immortal words are shared by Christopher Knight from Ezine Articles.

Now, if the CEO of Ezine Articles (which is considered to be the largest article directory on the Internet) tells us that the title of your Article is important.... we should listen!

Your Article Title Is Important

Spend 50% of your efforts on the "TITLE" of your article. This is extremely important. If your title isn't full of benefits for it's readers, chances are the article won't even get read... so spend a lot of time on it!

Here is some advice on how to craft your title:

  1. Ask a question in the title:
First Dates: Do You Make These 4 Stupid Mistakes When Asking Someone Out?
  2. Offer "How To" advice:
Search Engine Rankings: 4 Simple And Easy Ways To Improve Your Sites Rankings
  3. Be Specific:
Search Engine Rankings: 4 Simple And Easy Ways To Put Your Site On Page 1 Of Google

By following these simple guidelines - not only will you encourage people to click on your article, but you will also be improving your chances of being 'found' by the search engines.

Most importantly - pay attention to the guidelines of the article directories you are submitting to! I use the EZine Articles Editoral Guidelines as my baseline.... here is a subset of the guidelines that I use and you should consider using too:

  1. Your Title MUST Be In Upper and Lower Case Letters With The First Letter of Each Major Word Capitalized.

  2. Don't use QUOTES around your entire TITLE

  3. Do NOT end your TITLE with a period.

  4. Refrain from excessive repetitive punctuation in your TITLE. One exclamation "!" or question mark "?" is enough to make a point.

  5. Don't Keyword Stuff your TITLE. Keyword stuffing is the use of too many redundant keywords, over and over again.

  6. Use a MINIMUM of two unique words in your Title.

  7. Ensure your TITLE is relevant to the article content.

On a final note, whilst there doesn't appear to be any limitations on the length of the title for your article, I would recommend that you keep the title "short and succinct" - don't add words to the title just because you can! The title needs to capture the readers attention, but not bore them stupid. Try to keep the title to 100 characters or less.

Duplicate Content -- Isn't It Bad?

I'm sure you've all heard by now that Duplicate Content is frowned on by the Search Engines - particularly Google. Well.... in a way that's true. However, when using articles to promote your site, products or services - the duplicate content debate becomes a little greyer.

Let's consider this: articles are written to be reproduced - so of course, there is going to be duplicate content on sites all over the Internet - particularly if your article is really good.

According to Google:

"Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar...In some cases, content is duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or garner more traffic via popular or long-tail queries."

Many newbie article writers and blog publishers are concerned about submitting an article they publish on their blog to article directories. There really is no need to be.

I generally publish my article on my blog and then submit the article to the article directories. I may take some time and rewrite the article slightly... changing the introduction and conclusion sections.

Of course, the better way to do this is to write two articles - Part 1 and Part 2. The first part of the article, whilst it provides useful information is a teaser to the second part. The second part is the one you publish on your blog.

If you are using someone elses content -- then make sure that you give credit to that content.....
