What Is Niche Marketing?

Niche marketing is when you zero in on a specific topic or demographic and cater to the needs of the audience.  You don't want to go too broad with your niche because then it makes profiting from it more difficult.

For instance, alternative health is a very broad niche.  A narrowed focus would be alternative methods for stopping smoking, alternative cures for skin cancer, or alternative methods to cure sleep disorders.

Consider your email marketing list when you're honing in on a niche.  If you create a squeeze page with a free report, you want the visitor to feel like your offer is valuable to them - worth handing over their contact information.

There's no better way to do this than to speak directly to their needs.  If it's too broad, then half (or more) of your emails will feel like wasted time to the recipient. A man suffering sleep apnea won't care about herbal remedies for menopause, for instance.

The squeeze page graphics, opt in freebie, and emails should focus on WIIFM (What's In It For Me) - the question consumers always ask before trusting you with their email address.

So How Do You Find a Starving Niche?

niche emailsYou hang some bait in front of it and see if it bites. But first, you have to do some background research on where the fish (I mean, starving niche) is gathered. There are many ways to do this, including:

1.) Spying on other marketers. Sounds unscrupulous, but many marketers look to the ClickBank marketplace to see what's selling well. The key is to devise your own unique angle. Some marketers also spy on projects being posted at Elance because the people posting them don't realize they're being spied on.

2.) Visit TrendHunter.com and look for trends that are emerging so you can be one of the first to fill a need in a niche.

3.) Look to article directories to find out what publishers are picking up most. Of course, this means more competition, but don't let that drive away, because many marketers do it wrong anyway!

4.) Watch the news and absorb print media, too. Many trends, like the baby boomer niche, are always discussing their needs in news formats.

One you have a broad niche, such as Baby Boomers, try to narrow it down even more, such as "Funding Your Retirement" or "Health Care for Baby Boomers."

After you have an idea for a niche, dangle the bait in the virtual waters of article directories, web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, and see if there are forums where you can begin branding yourself as the go-to person in your new niche.

Make sure you set up some niche squeeze page templates and begin building a list right off the bat. You don't want your article marketing efforts to go to waste!

The Five W's of Niche Marketing Success

When you're trying to narrow down your niche, you want to create a profile of your target audience. This questionnaire will help you develop products that meet their needs.

Many marketers only choose a niche and assume they know what they should create, without ever taking the prospect into consideration.

Before you start writing for the audience, you have to visualize them in your head, get a feel for what they need, and then convey that you can deliver.

Who? - Who is in your demographic? Think about what makes them who they are, including age, race, gender, income level, and personality. Flesh out the typical character who would opt into your list.

What? - What are their needs? Why would they even land on your squeeze page in the first place based on what they were typing into the Google search box?

When? - Is there a sense of urgency in your niche? A mom dealing with a colicky baby has an immediate need for relief. Someone considering a real estate investment may have more time.

Where? - Does geography play a role in your niche? In some niches, it does, so make sure your niche will be broad and reach out to all of the World Wide Web - and if not, that's okay, too - but your email marketing campaign should reflect that fact.

Why (or How)? - Why do they need what you have to offer? How does your product or service dominate your competition?

Answering these questions ahead of time will help you create content for the 'net that blows the competition out of the water so that you can quickly plug in a squeeze page template and start building your list!

Have You Found a Niche Whose Needs You Can Fill?

Niche Marketing article by Wikipedia

A niche market is a focused targetable portion (subset) of a market.

By definition, then, a business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers. A niche market may be thought of as a narrowly defined group of potential customers.

A distinct niche market usually evolves when a potential demand for a product or service is not met by any supply, or when a new demand arises due to changes in society, technology, or the general environment.

Niche market ventures may become profitable even though they are by nature small in comparison to the mainstream marketplace, or monopoly. due to the benefits of specialization and focus on small identifiable market segments; even without the benefit of economy of scale. Niche markets may be ignored or discounted by large businesses due to what they consider to be small potential; this in turn is part of the process that makes the niche market available to smaller businesses. The key to capitalizing on a niche market is to find or develop a market niche that has customers who are accessible, that is growing fast enough, and that is not owned by one established vendor already.
