An Easy Way to Promote Your Business

Article Writing: A Cost-Effective Way to Boost Business

Most entrepreneurs are always looking for better ways to establish more credibility, create or increase recognition of a brand, strengthen customer loyalty, and effectively promote their business without having to spend large sums of money or massive amounts of time doing so. Many of these people are overlooking a relatively simple way to do those things and more which costs no more than a little bit of time . . . writing high quality articles related to their business and submitting them to article banks on the Internet. It's a great way to promote yourself and create backlinks for your lenses and websites.

What's the Big Deal About Writing Articles?

Webmasters are Searching for Content!

They're Looking for Writers and Articles Like Yours. Will They Find You?

Webmasters are Looking for Good Articles

You can write and publish dozens of articles, but they'll never do you a bit of good if you don't get published. You need to promote your articles just as diligently as you promote your business!

I never said it was going to be easy, but if you do it right...It'll be worth it!

First, Mention Your Articles in E-Mails that You Send Out. People you already know and have contact with will probably be interested in what you have written. Whether or not they publish your article they will read it and possibly click on the links that you have placed there.

Second Talk to People You Know You will be amazed how many people will be interested when you tell them that you write articles, and will ask where they can read some of the things you have written.

Third Mention Your Articles on Social Media If you use Twitter or Facebook you already have people who are interested in what you have to say. Chances are good that they will be glad to read articles that you have written. You already have a relationship with these folks This is just a chance for them to get to know you a little better. Regular Tweets or Facebook posts are a great way to publicize your articles, just be discreet in the number of posts that specifically mention your articles. Smart use of social media is a key to success.

"SEXY" Words Entice Readers to Want to Learn More!

Did it Work? An Effective Headline is Vital to Creating Interest and Enticing Readers

The headline is what catches the attention of a webmaster who is looking for content. If the headline is not interesting, chances are good that your article will be completely overlooked. And it is just the same once the article is published on the website. If your title GRABS ATTENTION there is a much better chance that the website visitor will actually read the article.

What kind of words catch people's eye?

* How To
* Easy
* Increase Your (Fill in the Blank)
* Exploit
* Learn About (Fill in the Blank)

Your Article's FIRST SENTENCE is Crucially Important

Your fourth grade teacher was right when she told you, "You need to write a good topic sentence."

The object here is to GRAB THE READER'S ATTENTION and ENTICE THE READER TO CONTINUE. The headline of the article may appear in search engine results along with the first sentence or two of your abstract or the article itself. If you don't catch the searcher's attention...whether that person be the webmaster who you hope will publish your article, or the searcher/visitor who you and the webmaster both hope will be enticed to read the piece, your article will almost undoubtedly never be read.

The First Paragraph: TELL A STORY or GIVE A BENEFIT!

If They Don't Get Past Your First Paragraph of Your Article You're Wasting Your Time

When I first started writing articles I was somewhat lost. My articles were interesting and provided good content, but it wasn't until I remembered what a sales trainer once told me that I began to see results. If you follow the advice he gave me, it will help you, too.

"Tell Them Why They Need to Listen in a Way That Makes Them Smile!"

I don't believe this is the full story, I prefer "
Tell Them Why They Need to Listen in a Way That Evokes Emotion!"

A story is great! A few lines indicating a lack of fulfillment in the reader's life and a promise to help reach fulfillment works well. Don't fulfill a NEED, fulfill and DESIRE, or tell how your product or website will do just that.

Grammar Builds (or Destroys) Credibility!

Make Sure Your Article Makes Sense and Reads Well

I hate to say it, but simply using good grammar and proper punctuation will make your article stand out from the pack. If you browse the articles offered by these directories you will often find articles which appear to have been written by people who have only a passing acquaintance with the English language.

Readers make the assumption that an article that looks like it was written with care is more worthwhile than an article that looks like it was thrown together at the last moment. If you've spent the time to put together a great business (no matter the size) ... if you've spent the time and effort to put together a quality Internet site (or even a single page) don't shortchange yourself by failing to spend the miniscule amount of time it takes to write your promotional copy well, and to check the article a second time before you submit it!

One trick some authors I know use is to read the article aloud. They say they catch errors more by hearing them than by just seeing them. I read most of my articles aloud, and at the article's first reading I almost always change something!

Does this mean that you need to follow every Grammar rule? What about Capitalization? I don't think so, but bend and break rules to produce an effect, not simply to avoid the trouble of checking up on yourself!

If your article is readable ... if your article is well-written, chances are much better that your article will be picked up by webmasters than if your article looks like it was written by an amateur.

Check your Grammar and Punctuation!

But Remember, You Are Writing for the Web!

The Rules of Composition You Learned in Fourth Grade Don't Always Apply.

As I said earlier, stick to the basic rules of grammar, but think, "Headlines." Short sentences are more effective. Use Capitalization to Your Advantage. I told you that Grammar is Important, and it is! But when it comes to writing articles for the Worldwide Web, rules can be bent. Write with Punch and Emphasis. Sometimes Sentence Fragments are Acceptable. Conversational Writing is Often the Best Way to Go. Just don't sound like Li'l Abner was the educated member of your family . . . unless that's the image you're trying to portray.

Perform a Service!

Keep the Reader's Interest in Mind

To you, the purpose of the article is to promote your idea or drive traffic to your website so you can make money. To the webmaster, the purpose of the article is to provide content to improve his rankings on search engines or to provide new content to make his readers come back. To the reader, the purpose of the article is to provide him with information or entertainment. NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE READER'S INTEREST!

So provide that service to the reader. Tell him what he needs to know. Make him smile, or cry, or just say "Awwhh!" And do that as a service to the reader. The body of your article is where you Give Something to the Reader

When you write the article be sure not to transgress the guidelines set out by the article bank with whom you are working, especially with regard to the number and placement of links. Best practice would seem to indicate that there should be no more than one self-serving link in the body of the article, with another self-serving link in the author's resource box! If the article is well-written, and the link is well-crafted, this will be sufficient. That link in your resource box is where your reward will come from. And if you will provide that service in the article body, you'll most certainly receive that reward when the reader gets to the resource box.

Short Articles Draw a Better Response

400 - 700 Words Seems to Work Best

Webmasters are looking for content which will fit into spaces on their pages. They look for fresh content which is substantial enough to interest their readers without overwhelming them. The rule of thumb seems to be between 400 and 800 words, although longer articles do work in some circumstances.

Remember, your goal in article writing is to fulfill the desires of three people. First, you need to provide content that will provoke the curiosity of the reader enough to get him to read through the article. That fulfills the requirements of the webmaster. If the article actually delivers by informing or entertaining the reader, you've met the expectations of the second party, the reader. But never forget that the third party involved is YOU! YOUR goal is to create enough interest and curiosity in the reader to cause him to click a link in your article that will lead him to your website where he will have the opportunity to take advantage of what you have to offer.

Don't tell the reader everything in the article...create interest and leave him wanting more. Reserve your big guns for your own website.

Keep It Short and Don't Tell Everything

Remember, your purpose in writing the article is to get the reader to click on your links. If you don't entice the reader with implicit (or overt) promises that he will gain something by clicking on those links, the reader will never make it to your website. Your opportunity to present your product or service to that reader on that day will be lost. And don't forget, it may be the only time you get the opportunity to address that particular reader. Don't Squander It.

Think of your article as the bait you use to lure that rainbow trout to your hook. The hook is the link that you want the trout to bite, so . . .

Provide a Summary and Great Call To Action

What's the Reader Supposed to Do When He Finishes Your Article?

From your publisher's point of view, the goal is to get the reader to read the article. Once the reader has reached the page on which your article is displayed the publisher's expectations have mostly been met. Your goal, however, is to get the reader to follow a link to your website so that he can get more information about your product or service. For this reason it is extremely important that you CREATE A STRONG SUMMARY AND A COMPELLING CALL TO ACTION AT THE END OF THE ARTICLE.

Don't Expect Perfection . . . It's Just an Internet Article

Your Job With an Atricle is to Entice. Save Your Best Work for the Ends Not the Means.

That's not to say that what you write shouldn't be of excellent quality. It is saying that neither the webmaster who publishes your article nor the reader who finds your article and reads it expects to learn everything there is to know about your subject from this one little article. The webmaster wants you to attract the attention of a reader to make that curious individual a visitor to his website. The visitor expects you to attract his attention and help him determine whether your product, your service, your website can help him further. If there is further interest, that visitor will be thrilled to click through to your website. He'll get the real meat there. Don't write a perfect article about your ultimate topic. Write an article that is good enough to draw people to your product, your business, or your website..

When Cooking, How Do You Tell if Spaghetti is Done?

Throw it at the Refrigerator, If It Sticks, It's Done.

Eventually some of it is going to stick. At least that's what we used to say in college.

What does that have to do with Article Writing?

Success in Article Writing is a matter of getting people to publish your article. If you are putting out a quality product, your article will get published. It may take a while, especially if you are writing articles with really limited audiences. But your article will get published, and it will get read. And if you've done your job well enough, your article will produce clicks on your links and you'll get the visitors you are after.

Throw enough spaghetti at the wall some of it will stick. Write enough articles, some will get published. Get enough articles published, and you'll get visitors. Get enough visitors and . . . well that's what you're after isn't it?

So What Are You Waiting For?

Your Article Won't Write Itself!

Pick a subject. Organize your thoughts. And START TYPING!

What you're looking for is results, and if you don't get to work you'll never get a result of any kind! The sooner you get to work, the sooner you can experience success.

That All Sounds Good, But I've Got No Ideas!

How Do You Find Things to Write About?

There are two trains of thought about article writing.

The first is that you should just write as many articles as you can about a wide variety of subjects. Write about things that you do every day. Write about your favorite television show. Write about your favorite recipes. Write about you favorite vacation spot. Write about ways to save time or money. The advantage here is that you get your name out on the Internet, hopefully becoming a trusted author due to the huge number of articles written.

The second is that you should choose a niche, then write about topics within that niche. The object here is to become known as an authority in that niche.

Either way, you need to find topics to write about. One way to go about that is to simply look at some effective starting lines for articles begin:
1. The best way to . . .
2. The top ten . . .
3. Five things to remember when you . . .
4. The worst way to . . .
5. The person who helped me the most . . .
Keep your area of expertise in mind and then begin talking about the subject with these five lines. You'll be amazed how often something comes to mind. And remember, sometimes the people who will most benefit from your articles are absolute beginners! Sometimes even the simplest, basic ideas concerning a subject are the very best article topics.
