Articulation and Speech Intelligibility

Articulation and Speech Intelligibility are the cornerstone of a Speech-Language Pathologist's work in the school setting. The materials highlighted in this toolbox are ones that I have used and found successful and maybe are not that commonly known. If you have any tools that you find successful, please share and we can make this tool box even better! Please note I am not addressing apraxia, dysarthria or other motor speech disorders with these recommendations.

The Essentials - Part 1

With these you can do anything...

Webber's Jumbo Articulation Drill Book
(Super Duper series)

40,000 Selected Words:
Organized by Letter, Sound, Syllable

These two books can be used to explore a client's speech sound inventory as well as provide needed practice. The Webber book tilts towards younger clients, although there are word, phrase and sentence lists without the cartoons. The 40,000 Words book seriously breaks down words into sounds and syllables, a great resource if you are working on coarticulation skills.

The Essentials - Part 2

What to do with the worksheets...

Eliciting Sounds:
Techniques and Strategies for Clinicians

Articulation and Phonological Disorders
(6th Edition)

These two books provide both the basis (Articulation and Phonological Disorders) and basic treatment approaches (Eliciting Sounds). Even after 20 years of providing treatment there are still times that I need to refer to these texts when an unusual client comes along, or I just forget.

The Essentials - Part 3

Specialized Tools

Accent Modification Manual:
Materials and Activities

Successful R Therapy:
Fixing the Hardest Sound in the World

Two areas of specialty in the area of articulation therapy is accent modification and the dreaded /r/ problem. Both require specialized materials and approaches that can be covered elsewhere. In the spirit of disclosure, I do not have much experience with accent modification, however I do have LOTS of experience with the remediation of /r/ sound errors.
