So , what is artificial intelligence? Well, I define it as a man made thinking device. At this early stage, that means a decision making device that makes decisions based on pre programmed routines. At some stage, one would then want to progress to a device capable of learning, that is store information about everything it encounters and use that information in a constructive way.

Artificial intelligences of varying levels of sophistication have been with us for a while. These include

1, Computer games : Ai are used as computer opponents in most complex computer games today

2, Scientific and Business applications employing neural networks.

3, Search Engines: Its likely that search engine algorithms would qualify as artificial intelligence software.

4, Movies: The concept of artificial intellingence is widely used in scifi movies today.

5, Novels and comics: Here as well, the concept of artificial intelligence provides a lot of fuel for the writers imagination.

6, Autonomous deep space probes. As space probe get further away from Earth basedcontrol, they need an onboard manager. This is usually a form of AI. These AI are usually capable of performing the list of set tasks that are programmed into them. The Space agencies can also update their instructions remotely. But its unlikely that they would try live online control of a space probe orbiting Neptune from Earth based communication centres.

The computer oppponent in any computer game is of crucial importance. This is true where we are talking about a Chess game or first person shooter or grand strategy turn based or real time strategy game.

The computer opponent should be capable of making all the basic moves available tl it and then to respond to actions from its human opponent. It should also be capable of executing built in or pre determined stratagems.

Artificial intelligence can be described as a computer software simulation of thinking processes. The thinking processes in question being human thinking processes.

In this lens, i am going to explore how Artificial intelligence has being depicted in movies, games and novels.

IN THE MOVIES
Movie makers have been depicting AI on screen for quite a while Some early examples include HAL from 2001 a space odessy, The robot butler from "Forbidden planet" Infact the depiction of mechanical men or robots has been around for longer than has the formal concept of AI.

The Organic or Cyborg style cylons of the new Battlestar Galactica series are the top depictions I have seen of AI to date. Its not always possible to guess what the writers are thinking or intend to convey, but these guys are it.

One of the facets of AI that this series splendidly addresses is the moivation of AI. What would they want?
