Selling Art Through Self Promotion

Self promotion is the key to success for an artist. If you are waiting to be discovered you will wait a very long time, unless of course you promote yourself! It's not hard to do, but it does take a bit of time away from your art. It's a balancing act between creating your art and promoting yourself so that your artwork will sell and you create forward motion with your art career. As an online publicist (retired now) of 14 years, I can give you some simple tips to help effectively promote yourself.

Simple Tips For Self-Promotion As An Artist

1. Participate in blogs that are interested in interviewing artists. This is a little self-serving as this is what we do at Whopple.com. However, it really is valuable to you as an artist. (Which is why I created Whopple.) There are lots of blogs that feature artists in one form or another. First, these features put you in the public eye from some else's point of view. It's like having someone else brag about your artwork. Second it provides back links and traffic back to your own art blog where you work is sold.
2. Study the galleries and pick about ten to concentrate your efforts. An excellent magazine for finding art galleries is Art America. After you have selected the appropriate galleries, start sending them a press release once a month detailing your new work. This is tons less expensive than sending a portfolio and it works. When a gallery is interested they will ask for more information from you.
3. Send press releases about your new work to the online media venues. This increases your exposure and provides valuable back links to your site. Interestingly enough it also pulls really targeted traffic. So many online businesses forget about the value of sending out press releases. They think they are just for newspapers or magazines. This simply isn't true anymore.
4. Study magazines that feature artists or their work. Some magazines, usually art related will feature you if you ask. Others will feature your artwork in a spread about homes and their interiors.
