How to summarise your Life as an Artist - the cv, the resume and the biography

different summaries for for different purposes

There are different ways of summarising the facts and content of your artistic work life.

The College Art Association reminds that there is a difference between a curriculum vitae and the "artist résumé."

* The CURRICULUM VITAE
is a record of all of your professional activities and is intended for use in academic situations.

* The ARTIST RESUME is an abbreviated document that is used in conjunction with commercial galleries, the search for exhibition opportunities, and certain grant applications. It is typically one to four pages in length.

* The BIOGRAPHY (or bio) relates to the wider context of your life in general

The most confusing aspect of all of this is that different organisations seem to use these words interchangeably to mean the same thing. It's REALLY CONFUSING!

When you need to produce one of these always check what sort of document the receiving organisation is expecting.

You might understand the difference - but they may not!

The Curriculum Vitae - for Artists

What is an artist curriculum vitae?

...and what does it contain?

The curriculum vitae is a record of all of your professional activities and is intended for use in academic situations.

The standard CV is factual and achievement based

More creative CVs (see advice further down this page) are more focused on explaining who you are and telling a story about your life as an artist. They're probably more accurately described as a biography

Author Jan Cole, who also wrote the earlier book with David Whistance has extensive experience in careers in higher education and the creative arts. Jan believes that, "Successful CVs and applications are all about understanding the target audience, and being meticulous in designing and producing a CV which not only portrays your skills and aspirations in the best light but is also right for the recipient."

BOOK: ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career

by Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathan Melber

This book includes a section on creating artist resumes and CVs.

The most comprehensive guide of its kind, Art/Work gives artists of every level the tools they need to make it in an art world so competitive one dealer likens it to "The Sopranos, except nobody gets killed." Whether you're an art school grad looking for a gallery, a mid-career artist managing a busy studio, or someone just thinking about becoming a professional artist, this indispensable resource will help you build your career and protect yourself along the way.

Unlike other creative professionals, visual artists don't have agents or managers. You have to do it all yourself, at least until you find gallery representation -- and even then, there are important business and legal issues you need to understand to stay in control of your career and ensure you're being treated fairly. Heather Darcy Bhandari, a gallery director, and Jonathan Melber, an arts lawyer, walk you through these issues so that you can essentially act as your own manager and agent. They show you, for example, how to tackle business basics such as tracking inventory and preparing invoices; how to take legal precautions like registering a copyright and drafting consignment forms; how to use promotional tools like websites and business cards; and how to approach career decisions such as choosing the right venue to show your work.

In addition to drawing on their own experiences, Bhandari and Melber interviewed nearly one hundred curators, dealers, and other arts professionals, in cities across the country, about what they expect from and look for in artists. The authors also talked to a host of artists about their careers and the lessons they've learned navigating the art world. The book is full of their entertaining anecdotes and candid advice.

No matter what kind of artist you are -- or want to be -- this book will help you. Art/Work covers everything you need to know to succeed, saving you from having to learn it all the hard way -- and letting you spend more time making art.

"Emerging curators, along with established curators who work with living artists, would do well to read it, as would art dealers and workers at nonprofit spaces or organizations.... The Résumé - for Artists

What is an Artist Résumé?

...and what does it contain?

The artist résumé is the 'short version' of your CV - an abbreviated document that is used in conjunction with commercial galleries, the search for exhibition opportunities, and certain grant applications.

REMEMBER - This is about you life as an artist - not every job you've ever had!

From a gallery perspective, if a resume is to be used in a catalogue then it needs to be accessible, informative but succinct.

If you are using a resume to try and become a gallery artists, then it needs to be long enough to contain enough relevant information which will accredit your status, experience and achievements.

The College Art Association suggests that it is typically one to four pages in length.

Typical contents include the following:
* Art Education eg art schools, courses of study, classes, workshops as appropriate
* Academic Awards eg fellowships, scholarships and grants
* Art Exhibitions - Solo Shows - detail location, venue, date and name of show; of more significance if held in a prestigious gallery
* Art Exhibitions - Group Shows (as above but include the name of the group too)
* Art Competitions - include selections for named juried competitions with date
* Art Awards - List name of award and type of show. Listing these after exhibitions can help eliminate duplicate information and keep the resume succinct
* Publications - list all journals and books you've contributed towards eg articles with title, date and journal
* Press - provide a listing all of all press mentions (including online)
* Teaching - state credentials and types of classes given or courses taught
* Professional Affiliations - eg signature membership of art societies
* Professional / Curatorial Activities - what you do besides create art!
* Collections - include names only if they indicate prestige and status of the collection. Differentiate between corporate and private collections

Standards and Guidelines | College Art Association - Artist Résumé: Recommended Conventions
The artist résumé conventions presented here are designed primarily for use with commercial galleries. While its length, one to four pages, is similar to the "short curriculum vitae," or "short cv," it is not intended for academic situations. Artists should avoid making the artist résumé complicated. It is meant to be short and simple to review. Galleries may receive dozens of applications per week, so you will want to make it easy on the eye.
* Select fonts and font sizes that facilitate reading.
* Use the white spaces well.
* Do not submit your artist résumé on a computer disk or CD-ROM unless it is specified.

WRITING AN ARTIST RESUME By Margaret (Maggie) Brezden
An artist resume is an absolute necessity for every professional artist. Although an artist bio may contain similar information it is presented in a different format than the artist resume.
* An artist bio is most often written in the third person and in paragraph form while the resume is not.
* Generally an artist's resume is organized by headings that are listed by date with the most recent event first. These headings can be bulleted, bold or underlined so they stand out.

Illinois Central College - Art - Writing a Resume
A resume is a summary of your accomplishments as an artist. Within your resume you list basic information such as your contact information, education and background experiences related to art. More in-depth accomplishments can be included such as: workshops attended/conducted, exhibitions you have been in such as one person shows and group and juried shows, awards, honorariums, any important commissions, collections, and any related publications.
What Art Dealers Expect From Your Artist Resume: Part 1 - your name | FineArtViews Blog by FASO

The next heading on your artist resume (based on what art dealers have told me over the years) should be dedicated to grants and awards.
