I don't have an artist statement yet, but I hope to have one this year. I will definitely be back to learn more about making one.

I think that an artist statement is like a statement of purpose or a cover letter in many ways. You write about why you create art, what influenced your decisions to make certain actions or produce a series and describe the theme or what it's supposed to represent.

One of the best "artist statement" that I have read was that of the preminent colorist Sam Gilliam who exhibition at the Speed Museum was a retrospective of some of his most notable works.

Often times with established artist who has created a body of work over several decades...their work "speaks" for themselves.

Wow, this is a great resource. I spend a lot of time marketing local artists, and information is always lacking about themselves. Or it ends up being not very interesting.

It's so important to get this right, and this helps immensely.
  • Chinajoy Nov 27, 2010 @ 3:23 am | delete
Thanks for all the info. It is a great help to those of us (artists) who are much better with producing the art than the business side. Great lens.
  • Followthedon Nov 24, 2010 @ 12:12 pm | delete
This is a good amount of info ,I have written some descriptions and some what of a artist statement in one of my classes but I really need to get better at them any how thanks for supplying all this info on your page.

As usual, a wonderful collection of resources and tips for writing an artist statement. I totally agree that writing a short statement really helps when you try to explain your work to others face to face (your elevator speech). Blessed for the content, layout, and attention to comments.

A must read for any artist :)
  • Color_Expert Oct 29, 2010 @ 8:11 pm | delete
It can be difficult to write about something as personal as your artwork but your lens has taken a bit of the pain away.
  • noobeegin Oct 24, 2010 @ 12:40 pm | delete
As an artist, I do find it difficult to write about my designs. Especially when they just start as an odd doodle and just develop into something as I go. This lens really helps to put my art into perspective and put a personal stamp on it
  • artyfax Oct 16, 2010 @ 5:34 pm | delete
wow, great lens; lots ( and lots) of useful info. Always seen this as a problem. Hope to be better equipped to do this after spending a little time browsing and getting thro this .

A much needed post. I am also a writer, so my artists statement came easily (http://aggiev.typepad.com/aggielogic/aggies-artistic-statement.html), but most artists I know struggle with this (and also writing their bio). Thankx for the great help. 5* for you!
  • d-artist Feb 5, 2010 @ 12:04 pm | delete
great lens...5* and an important aspect of an artist, one that really is hard to do...will have to re-evaluate my artist statement and see if I can improve it....thanks for sharing!
  • makingamark Jan 9, 2010 @ 4:05 am | delete
I forgot to mention - I will NOT be listing this site above as it offers no obvious value.
  • makingamark Jan 9, 2010 @ 4:04 am | delete
Before you all go racing off there, Daly neglects to mention that it will cost you $49 to get a look at this template and there's no guarantee you couldn't have put together something better from the FREE sources listed above

Bottom line there is NO INFORMATION on the site other than a link to a purchase order for a template called 'artist'
Frankly I think it is extortionate and if you want to spend money I think it's very likely that there are books that will give you much better advice
  • daly Jan 8, 2010 @ 10:21 pm | delete
I got an artist bio template from www.HowToWriteBio.com and found it useful. You may want to let others know about that site.
  • no_king Dec 9, 2009 @ 9:16 pm | delete
good information, but just not the RIGHT information.
  • makingamark Dec 10, 2009 @ 3:18 am | delete
That's an interesting comment! What would be the "right information"?
  • JaguarJulie Sep 3, 2009 @ 7:01 am | delete
My sister is an artist but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have an artist's statement written. I'm working with her to bring her into the internet to realize that she can market her work to a larger audience than just local patrons. A helpful resource.
  • sema Aug 7, 2009 @ 1:54 pm | delete
I am an artist and your lens was very useful lens.I am off to writing my artist statement .I somehow avoid elaborating on it.
  • Apr 14, 2009 @ 11:10 am | delete
You have an incredible amount of useful art-related lenses, and this one is no exception. I'm favoriting it so I can read it again and look through more of the resources you have here. I definitely need to work on this.
  • Bibleanswers Feb 21, 2009 @ 4:42 pm | delete
I'm not a serious artist, but this seems like a remarkable resource for anyone who is! My 13yo dd is currently a serious artist planning to work in the field when she is grown, so I enjoy coming across information like this for future reference. 5*
