How To Swap ATCs

All about swapping artist trading cards

Essentially, there are two ways to swap Artist Trading Cards: by mail, or in person. You can find either type of ATC swap online, though some areas may not have local swaps.

Swapping ATCs by mail: You can find ATC swaps on social sites like Flickr and Yahoo Groups, or through specialized ATC related websites like Atcs For All and Swap Bot. There are many places to choose from, keeping reading to learn more.

Swapping ATCs in person: Finding local ATC swaps can be difficult, so I've composed a list of all the artist trading card groups I know of. (Please contact me if you have any to add!) I also have some tips on finding local ATC swappers to arrange one-on-one swaps with.

Flickr is a great place to find people to swap ATCs with

Swapping artist trading cards on Flickr can be a fun experience, because you pick and choose from what an artist has available to swap. There are many Flickr groups devoted to swapping ATCs, and I've listed some of the largest ones here. As you can see, some groups fit a specific niche such as type of media used or geographic location. Feel free to explore the groups I've listed below or seek out a niche group. When you see an ATC you like, send FlickrMail to the artist to see if it's available for trade.

Artist Trading Cards Swap Sites

Some sites are dedicated to swapping ATCs and other fun stuff

There are a few sites out there that are dedicated just to ATCs or to snail mail swaps in general. Often these can be a good bet for getting frequent, consistent swaps, though usually you don't know exactly what you'll get. There is often a theme, but the exact artist trading card you get is a surprise.
ATCsforAll.com: Artist Trading Cards - ATCs for trading, collecting and swapping
ATCsforall.com is a welcoming Artist trading card and mail art community where new and experienced artists can join swaps, participate in one-on-one trades, and get to know their fellow artists. We do mixed media art, collage, hand-painted work, clay, fiber/fabric arts--you name it! All mediums are welcome too--stamping, painting, drawing, collage, mixed media, fabric, clay--you name it, we do it! And we don't just trade ATCs; there is a lot going on here. This includes chunky books, inchies, rinchines, twinchies, charms, art journals, altered art, rolodexes and rolo trading, and much more. We also have a gallery and trader rating system to facilitate trading between members and keep our community growing. We hope that you will join our family of art lovers and join us in trading art!
Swap-bot - Welcome
Do you like sending and receiving snail mail? Do you like writing letters, making crafts, or putting together fun packages? You should try swapping! Swap-bot is a online service that organizes group swaps and a community of creative individuals. Swap-bot takes the hassle out of participating in group swaps by organizing all of the participant information and doing all of the partner assignments. On Swap-bot, you can host swaps, join swaps, and chat with other swappers from all over the world. Give it a try!
Art Forty-Two
Special thanks to reader Heather for this tip: "Art Forty-Two is a great site - beyond ATCs, you can also trade all kinds of things. I have done trim swaps (like, bits of fabric trim), art paper-dolls, inchies, and twinchies."

How to pack ATCs for mailed swaps

When swapping ATCs by mail, it's important to be sure they are packed safely

One of the most important things to know about packing ATCs to swap them by mail is that it's best to slip them into trading card sleeves. Just sliding around back and forth in an envelope can cause damage to artist trading cards. To prevent this from happening, slip each ATC into its own sleeve and use Scotch tape to tape the sleeve to the inside of a blank greeting card or, in a pinch, a sheet of printer paper folded into thirds.

HOW TO: Pack and Mail your ATCs for Swaps

Making a Connection and Meeting Other Artists

That's the whole point of swapping artist trading cards

Ideally, swaps take place in person as it follows the original spirit of artist trading cards. According to the official ATC website, "it is important that you meet other people in person to trade - i.e. it is ok to trade by mail or to participate in editions but the main purpose of this performance is the trading session and the personal meeting."

As an active member in a local artist trading card group for over two years now, I can tell you that trading ATCs in person is very often a much deeper, more fulfilling experience than swapping ATCs online. I have formed bonds with my fellow artists that I am quite sure will last for years to come; they are some of my closest and dearest friends.

However, I understand that this is not always realistic as some areas don't have local swaps. You can still make it personal when doing mailed swaps. Simply share a bit of history of the card; how you can up with the idea for it, or what techniques you used, or if you were trying something new. Anything like that that you might chat about if you were meeting he ATC recipient in person. You can write some of this info on the back of you card along with the ATC name, edition, and your contact info. Or if you are sending directly to you swap partner (rather than a hostess, as some swaps arrange things) you can just include this in the note you send.
