The British Jazz sensation

British pianist/vocalist Jamie Cullum mixes jazz with melodic pop and rock into a crossover style that calls to mind such artists as Harry Connick Jr. and Norah Jones. In that vein, Cullum will just as often cover a swinging jazz standard as a modern rock song, and his original compositions deftly move from earnest ballads to songs of sardonic wit.

Having played guitar and piano since age eight, Cullum developed an avid interest in jazz passed down from his older brother Ben. Inspired by such piano icons as Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck, Cullum spent some of his formative years living in Paris where he honed his abilities performing in jazz clubs.

Cullum eventually earned a degree from Reading University, during which time he recorded his first album, Jamie Cullum Trio -- Heard It All Before, at age 19. The surprise success of that album eventually put him in contact with jazz bassist Geoff Gascoyne, who offered Cullum the opportunity to play on his album, Songs of the Summer. With Gascoyne's encouragement, Cullum eventually recorded his second album, Pointless Nostaglic, released in 2002.

The album benefited from a boost of publicity as it received heavy airplay on TV and Radio personality Michael Parkinson's BBC 2 radio show. Cullum eventually signed with Universal Records and released his third album, Twentysomething, in 2003. Catching Tales followed in 2005.

Hollywood Bowl, L.A. Philharmonic, July 21st, 2007

Cool Brittania

It was a cool brisk night in Hollywood. What I and 5 of my other friends didn't know was what a night it was going to be.

We knew we were in for a treat, Jamie was playing outdoors with the L.A. Philharmonic after all. This would be the third time seeing Jamie for me and my friend Nicole, although we were a bit sad that we would be so far away because both other times we had seen him we were in small venues and were right in front next to the stage. This would be the first time seeing him for my other friends. Jamie did not disappoint. He came out and sounded awesome with the orchestra behind him. He changed up "London Skies" and it was perfect. He engaged the crowd as he always does and had the night ended there we would have all been happy (though we would have loved him to play longer). But our night had just begun.

I had found out earlier in the night that Jamie was going to be doing a meet and greet autograph session after the concert. So as soon as Jamie took his last bow we took off like there was no tomorrow and ran to get in line. Needless to say we got our autograph's, shook his hand, had some pictures taken, and Corey got not only a hug but a kiss from Jamie. The proof is in the pictures below.

Like I have said before, if you have not seen Jamie live, you haven't seen him at all.

Here are some pics from the autograph session!

My second time seeing Jamie in concert

Grove, Anaheim California

This time it was a much shorter trip. But the result was the same. Jamie put on another amazing show with his tireless energy and exceptional musical abilty. He once again showed why he just such an amazing performer (the boy can play the piano). It was a bit bigger production this time around than is San Diego which was nice. I gotta say that his renditions of "These Are The Days" and "The Wind Cries Mary" were really well done.

He seems to connect with the audience at a level where you could just hang out with him at a bar, share some drinks, tell some stories, and you would never know he tours around the world as a jazz musician. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do it. And I'm telling you the girls love him. Once again I got to go with, this time count them, 4 absolutely stunning girls. Thanks Jamie!

My trip to see Jame Cullum in San Diego

At the House of Blues!

One of my favorite concerts I have ever been to.

I missed him when he was closer to me in Anaheim. So when I had a chance to buy tickets to see him in San Diego and found some friends that wanted to go, I jumped on it. The 1 1/2 drive wasn't going to be a problem. Not only because the drive was going to be made with 3 very beautiful women (hint to guys, girls love Jamie Cullum) but because I was finally going to get to see him live. First stop though was to Old Town San Diego where we had some drinks.

We then headed to the House of Blues. And can I say, Jamie is amazing live. His energy seems to never stop and he sounds absolutely awesome live. He played every song we wanted to hear and his interaction with the crowd was great. The crowd was also a very diverse, which was very cool. In fact one of the best parts of the night was when Jamie asked to crowd to get up and jump, we looked up and saw an older couple (possibly in thier 70's) get up and start jumping. It was awesome. Needless to say that I and my friends had a great time and we cannot wait till he comes back to california.
