Get the help you want
Ithink one of the most difficult pictures to draw, is the drawing of a person's face. Artists know that the placement of features is but a small part of drawing a face. How to draw hair that looks like hair, lips that are realistic, or eyes that show emotion really are where we need professional help. Of course, the very best help for these pencil drawings would probably be with the help of an in-class art instructor. But many artists need to work at jobs to cover their daily living expenses and haven't the time to go to these classes. That's where on-line classes can provide the information that we want, and to use on our schedule.
One really good free site for drawing portraits is Learn To Draw Lessons . This site has free online drawing lessons and videos created especially for art students of any age.
If you are looking for on line courses that you pay for and download onto your computer, I'd say one of the best out there may be the Realistic Portrait Drawing home study course. Although this costs a little money, I think it is a quality program. The main thing is that you want to get started and to practice, practice, practice.

Mastery Home Study Course

You can do this without wasting precious time and going through years of trials and errors. The cost of this program is well worth the money.
The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life. ~William Faulkner

When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?" ~Howard Ikemoto

How To Make Origami
How to Draw Step-By-Step
a video guide
In this video guide Taylor Roy reveals three secrets of drawing realistically:
The first secret is that you need to master drawing each feature individually.
The second secret is you need to learn how to bring these features together to create a masterpiece.
The third secret is that you need to learn to see what others can't see.
Taylor says that too many people try to master everything, instead of focusing on the few important techniques that they actually need to master portrait drawing. These videos will make the serious artist an even better artist.
Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. ~Scott Adams

- That's me, want-a-bee artist. A couple of years ago I bought a couple of kids drawing books. Good step for me to start at. I don't work at it too much. Squidoo, the internet and tea bag folding take up too much time. I waste too much time too.
I like your craft lenses. Very nice.

- Nice informative lens! My favorite book on drawing is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Dr. Betty Edwards, she emphasizes "you draw what you see not what you know."
