Why Paint On Stone?
Tabby cat, acrylic on stone, www.hysongdesigns.com
Stone was perhaps the first surface man painted, decorating his caves and sacred sites back in the stone age. Today Rock Art is an emerging art form with many talented artists getting in on the fun. Painting on a stone is to paint a 3-D image on a 3D-object, giving a sculptural feel to your work, without the bother of learning to create a sculpture from scratch.
Pet portraits and memorial stones are becoming more and more popular, especially as more people opt out of having children and just have pets instead. Stones painted with acrylic paint and sealed against the weather become unique pieces of garden art. Stones are a forgiving surface, make a mistake, just paint over it. This makes stone painting a no stress surface for beginning artists.
How I got started Painting on Stone
I learned to paint on stone from Lin Wellford's Books
Today I create some very lifelike animal art on stone and sell them through a local shop as well as online. Along the way I have learned many things about painting in general, painting with acrylic paints, creating 3-D paintings and how to paint life like animals. I will share some of these discoveries in future lenses. Also along the way I have 'met' other rock artists and learned even more. Here I will highlight some of those artists as well as some resources so you can get started on your own adventure in Rock Art.
A Few of My Stone Paintings
A few of the stone paintings for which I have uploaded photos to flickr. I'll be adding more photos to the set and or adding another set as I have time. I have painted over 200 rocks in 2011 alone.
Lin Wellford, Arkansas, United States
Lin Wellford is perhaps the most well know rock artist in the United States. Lin is the author of several books on rock painting, from super simple designs suitable for young children to some very lifelike animals. Her instructions are easy to follow and understand with great color photographs to help you along. In addition to the book projects Lin includes photographs of many other related animals to inspire you. Lin's book "Painting Animals on Rocks" was the first one I discovered. I've happily worked my way through most of the rest of her books. No matter how long I paint I always find some new tip that helps me out in a new book. Links for Lin Wellford

- Stone Menagerie is Lin's stone painting business. From this page you can see her books and even order an autographed copy. You can also order your own pet portrait from Lin.
- Yahoo! rock painting group
- This is the original rock painting group at Yahoo! news groups. I encourage you to join, we have a lot of fun, cheer each other on, give advice, critique if asked and generally just have a good time. I love to go look at all the new photos of what everyone else is painting.

Just a few of the dogs I've painted this year. My goal for 2011 is to paint as many of the usual or most popular breeds as I can.
Suzi Chua Rocks Malaysia
Suzi Chua's wonderful stone food!
Late one night through a random Google search I happened across the website of Suzi Chua. Suzi is a self taught artist working with pastel on paper and acrylic paint on stone. Over the years she has literally painted hundreds, if not thousands of stones, ranging from domestic pets to exotic wild animals. Suzi has a kind and giving heart and freely offers help and advice through the Stone Painting forums accessible on her website as well as the Lin Wellford Original Rock Painting group on Yahoo! newsgroups.Suzi has now published several e-books about rock painting. Working through the projects Suzi provides in her e-books, from very simple to quite elaborate will give any beginning artist a great foundation in this art form. She has painted and published so many photographs of her works over the years that she had to move her older photographs to a separate website.

Flora Tan, Borneo Rocks, Malaysia
Flora Tan is another Malaysian rock artist. She collaborated with Suzi Chua and Lisa Carter on Suzi's latest e-book, "Let's Get Catty". Flora, like most rock artists takes pet portrait commissions, as well as painting other animals, like the unique ones native to Malaysia. Many of Flora's animals sport bandanas or ribbons with messages on them, a nice way to say "I love You". Links for Flora Tan

This leopard rock was quite large, about 12x12 inches and about 16-18 inches long. I almost couldn't lift him.

Not all Rock Art is serious. Some of mine is down right silly, like my 6 toed giant foot. It all depends on what the rock says to me....
Angel Blessings

Squid Art provided by Steve Thompson, aka tagsforkids
Squidoo Angels are super nice people that volunteer to read and 'bless' lenses. A blessing is like a super duper giant LIKE and gives the lens a little bit of a boost in lens rank. They also share those lenses with a lot of other people so more people discover you. This lens has been wonderfully blessed and I am honored that you all thought it was good enough! These lovely Angels have blessed this lens, thank you! I very much appreciate your help and support!
Lady bugs are an easy beginner's project and as you can see they have lots of personality. I've just finished up a free tutorial!, How to Paint Ladybug Rocks.
Lens of the Day
This Lens was Lens of the Day on June 16, 2011. This is a very high honor to me, I had only been a member of Squidoo for 26 days and this was my very first lens that I published. I'd like to thank everyone who gave me helpful hints, read, liked and shared my lens. The Squidoo community is wonderful and I'm proud to be a part of it.Squiddo art provided courtesy of Steve Thompson / tagsforkids, see more on his squidoo art page
THE PURPLE STAR
Perhaps because it's been showered with so much Angel dust, this lens was awarded a Purple Star. They don't give out a lot of these in a year, compared to the number of lenses written each year, so this is really and truly a special award to me. Thank you one and all who have had a hand in making my first lens such a success.
Please sign the Guestbook and give me some feedback!
This is my very first Squidoo lens and I would love to have your feedback about this page. What do you love, what do you hate, what should I do differently? And if you are a rock artist or know of one, please add their website url to your comments! I love to visit other artists and see their work!
