What is Artists in Residence (AiR)?

The aim of the Artists in Residence series of documentary-style videos is to give viewers a "behind the scenes" look at working artists in order to de-mystify the creative process, heighten appreciation for the artistic community's contribution to our lives, and to reveal the commitment artists make to their work. The artists involved have contributed their time and expertise with the knowledge that their messages about the arts will receive the largest audience possible.

J.T. Dunphy: "Revealing Treasures in Trees" (AiR-027)

J.T. (Tom) Dunphy, a self-taught woodturner, uses local "rescued" hardwoods (deadfall, storm damaged trees, and woodpile pickings) to create his unique pieces. His works, some as large as 20" in diameter and retaining the natural bark rim, are turned from a single piece of wood--elm, cherry, oak, osage, apple, pear, walnut, ash, and maple. The resulting pieces feature astonishing grain and figure. His functional pieces include plates/platters, boxes, salt & pepper sets, pepper mills, bud vases, oil candles, ikebanas (Japanese-inspired flower arrangers), bowl sets and the occasional lamp. JT's awards have included Best of Show at New Albany, Findlay, Delaware, Westerville and Oberlin arts fesitvals.

Starting with a rough cut section of spaulted maple, JT guides the viewers of Revealing Treasures in Trees through the steps he takes in revealing Nature's hidden treasures. JT first turns a log into a rough bowl discovering a nail embedded in the "blank." Viewers then pick up the process several months later after the rough bowl has dried. JT goes through the finishing process of turning, sanding, and sealing. Preview JT's video below.
