Arts Directory
As an ongoing effort to help new webmasters understand the usefulness of submitting their sites to directories I am covering the arts directory today. There have been many things written about general website directories over the last few years, and this last year especially. Last year Google decided to give less weight to a link from a lot of directories and penalized some directories for charging for being listed on their sites. I run a number of small general web directories so I know exactly how useful they are and how well they are indexed.
I will start with just a few facts about some of my directories. They outrank some of the sites listed in them for the keywords that those sites are targeting. What that means is that someone searching for those keywords is more likely to end up at my directory than at the site listed in the directory. So if you happen to be listed in that section then there is a good chance that your site will get traffic directly from my directory. Good directories that are well taken care of have a huge number of pages index in the search engines. That helps if you are considering a featured link in a directory. Besides getting on someone's blogroll there aren't too many other places you can get thousands of links to your site immediately.
I am of the opinion that you should definitely submit your site to directories and don't worry about finding only the best ones. It only takes a few seconds to add your site and while it may not be the best link you will ever get it will be just about the easiest. But make sure that you submit to the correct category. If the category you are considering has baby categories that suit your site better then make sure you submit to them or more than likely your listing will get suspended and never show up at all. It is an insult to the directory owner if you submit to a top level category and your site is less than a PR5. Don't bother.
Some directory owners take a lot of pride in their sites and work hard to make it the best site that they can. By doing things like writing articles about their sites and building links to then that will help all of the sites that are listed in those directories. Take your chances and submit your site to at least 5 directories per week and you will soon find that your site is better ranked in the search engines just from that minimal amount of effort. Of course there are better links you can obtain, but like I said earlier there aren't any that are easier to obtain. Below is a list of three directories that will definitely help you attain your online goals, give it a try.
