A Bit About the Art Shaman

As the Art Shaman, I use art as a tool in assisting someone's soul for the purposes of transformation.  It's a title I created for myself through my involvement in the online reality of Second Life.  In the realms of art, shamanism, magic and Second Life the line between reality and imagination are very blurry.  (My lens about Second Life)  In a way, I am just posing as an "art shaman", making it up as I go along.  But that's the way it is at the heart of creativity, too, and that's where transformation happens.  The Art Shaman is real and not real at the same time, standing in the middle of the creative flow.

The art I do is mainly intuitive. (My lens about intuitive portraits.)  I rarely know what's going to happen as I sit down to work.  I have been attuned to Usui Reiki II and Kundalini Reiki to the Master level, so the energy flows from my hands as I work.  I know, intuitively, that the art I make can change the viewer's energy field, aligning it to higher vibrations.  That's something I knew was happening even before I read the The Healing Power of Hado.

The Law of Attraction is a hot topic right now, and my goal as an artist is to give people an image they can put in their surroundings that can actually help them attract the things they want in life, especially on an emotional level.  Some people would consider it sympathetic magic, and it is.  And it works, especially when charged with the universal life force energy.   (See my lensroll for a lens about the Law of Attraction)

In my studies of subtle energies in the human body I have learned about the chakra system.  There are many books and websites about chakras now, and I have links elsewhere on this page.  My art is designed to "tune up" your chakras in order to increase your own creative flow and also draw into your life the things you want by repatterning your own energy field and unconscious mind.

Fantastic Art Shaman Guidebook: The Artist Inside

I knew it had to exist...

Took me a while to find it but here is a definitive book - a textbook, even - for aspiring art shamans.

The Artist Inside: A Spiritual Guide to Cultivating Your Creative Self

Amazon Price: $5.47 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

This book perfectly combines creativity and shamanism. The author guides you through a shamanic process of connecting with your inner artist and power animal to create an ongoing relationship with them through journaling, inner journeying, ritual, energy work, making a sacred space art studio, etc. The theory is that it will help your creative efforts to actively engage with your other levels of consciousness.

The Art Shaman is....

  • An agent for change at all times, without even trying.
  • A reiki practitioner.
  • Well traveled in alternate realities.
  • A medium for the deceased.
  • Clairsentient.
  • Able to dream while awake.
  • Far from perfect.

Urban Shaman by Serge Kahili King

How to Become a Huna Adventurer

Or, how to practice a form of Hawaiian shamanism when you aren't a native Hawaiian.

I've met Serge Kahili King in, of all places, Second Life. Huna and shamanism as described in Urban Shaman pulls together all the various pieces of what a shaman does that I've been collecting for years (at last!). Serge hosts a weekly healing circle in Second Life at Pali Uli on Wednesdays at 11 AM Pacific Time, and also a monthly Talk Story there on the first Sunday of the month at 12 PM PT.

This is a great pocket-sized book that teaches you the basic components of being a shaman whether you want to actually be one or just understand what a shaman does. Each page covers a different topic such as:

- The Sacred Artist
- Shamanic Awakening
- The Vision Quest
- Animal Spirits
- The Fool
- Who Are the Shamans
- And more!

This book does not cover shamanism in great depth, but sometimes less is more.

Commission Your Own Spirit Guide or Angel Portrait

You may commission me to do a portrait of one of your spirit guides in one of two sizes: 3.5 x 2.5 inches for $30, or 4 x 6 inches for $50, which includes shipping and handling.

Like the drawings you can see here and here, your portrait will be done with colored pencil on Bristol board paper. Recently I have started working much smaller, doing what are called "ACEO's", or Art Card Editions and Originals. They are 2.5 x 3.5 inches. I am very happy with the way they are turning out.

I accept payment via PayPal up front. I can work with a photograph of yourself or not, but the end result will likely not look like you that much. They don't always come out as having a human body, either, but always a friendly, light-filled face.

Contact Gretchen with "portrait" in the subject line for more information and to order.

The Concepts in These Books Sum It Up

Although I don't do things exactly as described, these books come the closest to explaining what the "art shaman" is about. And.."Flowdreaming" and "The Healing Power of Hado" were published after I was already doing what I do.
