MARKETING FOR ARTIST
A Few Basics to Get Started
If you've been in the art business for years or just starting out to market your art, there is always something new to learn.
In this lens I will start out with the most basic aspects of marketing and proceed to the more advanced techniques.
So, let's get started.
One of the first things I recommend for any artist, is to have at least ten pieces of art completed that have continuity and are in the same genre. Get them professionally photographed, and I stress professionally because this will be the work that represents you to the public eye.
The next step I like to take is to get a web site set up that is simple, easy to navigate, professional, has your art work and your contact info, artist statement and biography (which I will talk about later in detail in a linked lens), and has relevant key words and SEO (search engine optimization). If you need information about key words and SEO you're going to have to do some research or go to a pro website creator, or possibly I'll write a lens about this topic later. Hey, don't worry, this gets easier, once you get over the hump of putting the basics together.
Make sure you create a presentation portfolio so that you can physically go out and show your art work. You will want to get a nice portfolio case that you can put at least ten 8.5" x 11" photographs of your art work in. Make sure this looks sharp. First impressions are important, so present yourself professionally.
So, there's the first three major steps to getting started. This is like laying the foundation of your "art house" so that you can build a strong and beautiful "art house" on top of it.
NOW WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR ART, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND WEBSITE?
Should you go and find yourself an art promoter?
Are art galleries the best place to get started?
Would it be wise to join a bunch of social networking sites and promote yourself that way?
Would reading a lot of marketing books help?
Are there other places to have art shows than just galleries?
These and many more questions will be answered in the articles below. The answers I have are of course my opinion, and you may find other more effective methods on your road to marketing than the ones I have mentioned here. The Next Step For Emerging Artists
So now you have a coherent group of art work, great photos, and a fantastic web site.As an "emerging artist" (someone just starting out) you have a lot of options to get your art work out into the market place. Below are several ideas, starting with what I feel is most important based upon my experience. Of course whatever works best for you is what is really important.
Take your time, relax, as this stuff takes time, fortitude, and patience.
Let the force be with you my young Jedi............
1) Enter juried contest and shows to build your biography. When entering these contest it is important to decipher if they are actually about promoting artist or just about the contest holder making money (more on this later).
2) Look for smaller venues to show your art in until you have gained at least a local following. Places like coffee houses, emerging art galleries, restaurant's, or any other small venue that might give you visibility. This also builds your biography which is an important step to getting into the larger galleries. Make sure the place has insurance that will cover your art work in case of a mishap.
3) Join social networking sites like Facebook, Napoleon Exchange, Twitter, and art networks. This doesn't mean your necessarily going to sell something from these sites, but it does help to give you visibility. Just a note: don't over advertise yourself on these sites, it tends to turn would be prospects into no prospects.
4) If your thinking about contacting an art agent or marketer at this point, please hold off for a bit until you have developed several good art shows, have a great biography, a few published news clips about you, and simply a good sense of what it is that a marketer can do for you (more details on this later).
5) Make a very professional looking business card that has your art on it as well as all your contact information. There's nothing like networking and handing out your cards to help you in your endeavors. You can do this step at any point in time.
REMEMBER, BE PATIENT, ENJOY, BE CONSISTENT AND CONSTANT IN YOUR PERSUIT.
Ohh yeah..........I almost forgot something really important. Keep a nice neat file of all the contacts made, buyers of your work, galleries, and everything conected to your art marketing.

I mean just the photos, bio, and artist statement are enough to keep you busy for a good bit.
So keep creating art, and take ten hours a week to invest it in the marketing part of things.

Encounters with the Marketing World
Most of my art marketing experience is not theoretical, but real world, get out there and do it stuff. I started off pretty naive and full of unrealistic expectations, thinking that I was going to be embraced by the whole world because I was so talented. Man, what an ego I had, and believe me, it got deflated pretty quickly.I learned a little bit about art marketing in school when I got my degree in graphic art. They showed me how to put together a professional portfolio, and how to present myself to would be employers or clients.
When I decided to return to school to get a fine art degree, they didn't even bother with marketing because, they thought it was a lowly thing to do if you wanted to be a great artist.
So I felt quite thankful that I at least learned something about marketing from my graphics schooling that I could actually apply to the "real" world.
From there I went to New York city to live out my dreams to become a famous artist.
Guess what? I didn't become instantly famous and I didn't know how to approach galleries, and I didn't know that galleries look for artist that are generally selling well because the gallery owner has to make a living. Add to that that I wanted a show now, not in year. Most galleries are booked for the coming year before you ever approach them. So, it was a bit of let down for my young over inflated ego.
After doing a bit research, I started looking for emerging art galleries instead the high end galleries I wanted to get into, so I could build my biography. I started getting in several shows, juried, unjuried, competitions, and small unknown galleries.
At the time I started out trying to sell my art, the use of computers for internet marketing barely existed. I lived like a cave man. Everything was through the mail or delivered in person and things were slow.
Skipping several millenniums, I encountered the computer age in full bloom, and started a web site, got on social networking sites, twittering, blogging, making videos of my art and art shows, posting them on Youtube and everywhere else, using the age of electronics to my benefit in any way I could benefit from it.
I still do a lot of person to person marketing, going to network meetings, and generally selling myself as an artist whenever possible, though not in any overt or obnoxious way. I just love doing art and making money from it.

Promoting Yourself With a Video
One of the easiest ways for people to get to know you and see your art work is to create an informative and fun video. You can put the video on your website, youtube, Facebook, even here on Squidoo.A FEW BASICS
What should be in your video?
1) Your art work. This one is kind of obvious!
2) Either talk about your art work while your creating a piece or do a straight on interview.
3) Humor! Have some fun talking about your work, and generally speaking, people are much more attentive when you add a bit of fun to things.
4) Be yourself, people love genuine people.
5) Have a professional or at least a semi-pro film you and do the editing. This is'nt absolutely necessary, but it gives you a more polished look.
6) Make sure you have your name, contact info, and website on the video.
7) Look up a bunch of art videos on youtube and pick out the ones you like so the videographer knows something about what you want your video to look like.
When it comes to marketing your art, whatever tools you can employ to get visibility, get noticed, do it! Well........let's make sure it stays legal.
I have to admit something to you.
I made my own amateur video about my art, and people loved it. I don't know why people liked it so much, because it's really pretty poorly done. I made my own because I thought I could produce something good without having to put out the bucks for it. You can do this as well, its just that I think you end up with a lot better product if you can make a small investment. I posted the video I did below.

Marketing is the process associated with promoted for sale goods or services. It is considered a "social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and values with others." It is an integrated process through which companies create value for customers and build strong customer relationships in order to capture value from customers in return.
Marketing is used to create the customer, to keep the customer and to satisfy the customer. With the customer as the focus of its activities, it can be concluded that marketing management is one of the major components of business management. The evolution of marketing was caused due to mature markets and overcapacities in the last decades. Companies then shifted the focus from production more to the customer in order to stay profitable.
The term marketing concept holds that achieving organisational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering the desired satisfactions. It proposes that in order to satisfy its organizational objectives, an organization should anticipate the needs and wants of consumers and satisfy these more effectively than competitors.

A Quick Review on Marketing Basics
This is a quick review of what I mentioned in the previous articles above. If you have missed any of these essential steps, you may find it difficult to proceed to the next leve of marketing that I'm going to talk about in the upcoming articles.ESSENTIAL ART MARKETING STEPS.
1) Complete at least 10 coherent , finished pieces of art work.

My Experiences With Marketing
As an artist I have had a wide variety of thoughts about marketing my art. At first I was very reluctant to spend any time on marketing because I thought that creating art was primary, and the marketing stuff would take care of itself. I also thought marketing was a lowly activity reserved for others.Eventually I evolved a bit and began to see that no matter how much art I created, it did not sell itself except for the occasional friend who might buy something. Not exactly a profound insight, but it did lead me to looking for some marketing answers. I wanted to make money and there had to be some way to get my stuff out the door and create an income from it.
I did found it difficult to create a balance with my time between creating art and looking for ways to sell my art.
After a lot of soul searching and experimentation I found that if I set aside just ten "focused" hours a week to marketing I still had plenty of time for my creations.
With ten hours a week you can do a lot of research, phone calls, email marketing, social networking, and everything else you will need to succeed.
Of course the long term goal is to have someone else do your marketing. This usually happens when you have established yourself a bit and are deriving a reasonable income from your art.
You may succeed on a different path than what I have experienced marketing my art. You may already know someone who wants to promote you, or you may own a gallery, or be extraordinarily wealthy, but either way, you still need marketing knowledge and time.

I had to set up a schedule for myself that helped me to balance my time between creating art and doing the marketing. Some people don't like schedules, so figure out what works best for you and keep at it.

Are Galleries The Best Choice For You?
Galleries can be a great place for you to sell your art, or they can be a place where your art will sit in the back room and rarely be seen.How can you know if a gallery is going to sell your art?
Are co-op galleries worth the time and cost?
What kind of gallery is best for you?
There are a lot of different types of galleries out there, one or all of them may or may not work for you.
Galleries want to make money from your art work, so they have a stake in your future well being as well as their own.
HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A GALLERY.
1) Ask about their mailing list. How many people are on it, and is it a targeted mailing list? Another words, who is their audience.
2) Do they have a large existing client base?
3) How long have they been in business?
4) Do they carry insurance?
5) Go to a few of their openings and see what sort of people they attract.
6) Do they have a professional web site?
7) Do they sell locally, nationally, and or globally?
8) What percentage do they charge you to sell your art?
9) Does your style of art fit in with their gallery?
10) How much art do they sell a year?
11) Do they use a legal contract with the artist. You will want one.
Some galleries are what is known as exclusive, meaning that you can only have your art in their gallery and may not promote it anywhere else. This can make your artwork appear to be important because of the limited places to purchase it, or it might serve only to make it hard for people to find where to buy your art. Generally art galleries only want this kind of a deal if you are a well established artist. Once you sign an exclusive legal deal with them you are obligated to them, so be smart, and seek legal consultation before ever signing a deal.
Fact: You can never really know if a gallery is going to sell your art.
Research: Look up the gallery on line, ask other artist in the gallery if they are selling, ask the gallery owner about art sales amount per year, ask how they will promote your art, go to their openings, go into the gallery before you talk to anyone there and see how they interact with you. See if you like the place & people that work there. Another words, do due diligence.
Co-op Galleries are owned by the people that show their art there. Generally, entry is gained by juried piers. These galleries can be a good entry point for you if your an emerging artist. Usually you have to put time in and/or money in the gallery. This type of gallery can help to build your biography.
WHAT TYPE OF GALLERY IS BEST FOR YOU?
Good question. Depending on where you are in your art career, selecting a gallery that is appropriate for your work is what's really important. If your just starting out, you probably are not going to get into high end galleries in N.Y., and if your a well established artist you probably are not going to seek an underground sort of gallery. There are no hard and fast rules about galleries. Access yourself and your art honestly and finding a gallery is a lot easier,

- Artswami has not merely created a blog but a multimedia wiki about art marketing that communicates with aplomb and is threaded with a great ATTITUDE.

This lens covers so many key aspects of communication and demonstrates such a positive attitude that anybody who is trying to get the word out would beneifit from reading and digesting its content.

- Fantastic lens!!! You obviously put a lot of thought and energy into this site. It is content rich, interesting, informative and aesthetically pleasing. Paintings are cool!!
My scrolling finger did become a wee bit tired so may I suggest that if the subject matter is enough of its own subject to stand on its own or evan as a subset then perhaps it could be moved with a backlink to its own special wonderfuls lens page. For example the gallery info.

Art Consultants, PR, & Art Reps
Do you need an Art Consultant, PR person, and or and Art Representative?What do they do for you as an artist?
Let's start with some general definitions.
GENERAL DEFINITIONS:
1) Art Consultant - Generally they help you to understand what it is that you want to accomplish as an artist. They can access where you're at in your art career and what path might be best for you, and what you need to put together to get yourself in the market place. Some may be both a Consultant and an Art Representative. On the average they charge $25 to $150 an hour, so I suggest you have some good questions to ask them that you really want answered.
2) Art Representative - You won't find many people announcing themselves as Art Representatives. Usually they run/own galleries, and/or look for artist that are of interest to them. They will market you either nationally or globally. They generally have thousands of contacts and a proven track record of getting art work sold. They will usually pocket anywhere from 40% to 60% of the cost of your work.
3) Public Relations also known as PR. These guys are essentially into branding, which means, they sell your art by creating an identity that everyone can recognize such as the soft drink brand Coke. PR has been created as a specialty now and generally is not inside an advertising agency anymore because the task of branding has become such an enormous effort.
These are abbreviated definitions of the above mentioned. If you want to find out more about each one I'll be giving some very worthwhile links for you research.

WHO DO YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL?
Is It Art Reps, Art Consultants, PR's, or Someone Else?
So now the magical answers you've all been waiting for.................Having your art represented by an art representative has a lot of advantages depending on the art reps reputation, their marketing capabilities, their organizational skills, if they are nationally & internationally known, and if they have repeat buyers nationally and internationally. They can set up shows and publicity for you and help you into the big time. These guys can put your career in hyper drive, or at least help you to make a living from your art.
An art consultant can help you sort out what direction you may want to take and if your ready to proceed, as well as answer those thousand and one questions you may have. So all in all, I think getting some objective feed back from a professional who is not a family member of friend is quite a wise thing to do, and can set you on a well defined path to market your art.
The public relations guys can do wonders for your image. This is generally a pricey option to take, as the guys that really know their stuff are going to charge you some major dollars. The definition of PR is,"Building and managing relationships with those who influence an organization or individual's audiences". So, they target your audience, build up mass appeal and away you go, once again if you have lots of "mulla". All in all, I have never known any artist to use a PR person aside from those in the music or film industries. Andy Warhol came the closest to being a self made PR guy, and it worked quite well
THE BIG QUESTION!
Do you need anyone listed above, or galleries to help your art career?
Wow, this is a tough one to answer because every artist has a unique way of promoting themselves or not promoting themselves.
I believe there is always greater possibility and strength in surrounding yourself with people who know more than you do and want to work with you. Doing marketing work solely on your own can be done, but it requires enormous time and energy that you could be putting in your art work.

- There is a lot of very helpful information here. I was just looking at an MFA program and wondering if, at age 48, I really needed to pay somebody thousands of dollars when I would still end up having to do the work myself. (That was what I found after majoring in studio art (because graphic art wasn't an option) from a small college.) It seems to me that if I did all the work I would need to do to even apply for a graduate program I wouldn't really need it. lol 5*
