An artist with 30 years' experience.

I am a part-time artist, having drawn for 30 years.
You can see my art at:

Just email me for rates and any other questions.
Our minister at church recently commissioned me to draw his 2 sons in a portrait. He gave his wife the finished portrait on Mother's Day. She loved it.
I also drew a scroll with the Bible passage from Psalm 127:3 which was very apropos.
Check it out for yourself.

while I'm What I like to do is to put on some
cool tunes from

while I'm drawing and, voila, I'm in another world.

drawing and, voila, I'm in another world.
Priceless!

One way I use to promote my art is with fridge magnets.
It sounds a little strange, but think about it.
I print up a business card with my name, phone number, and website on it. Then go to an office supply store and pick up blank magnetic strips that attach to a business card.
Then peel off the paper backing of the magnet, apply your business card, and give it to people.
The fact is that people just don't throw away fridge magnets.
They stay in plain sight for YEARS and YEARS with your message on them.
In fact, the first time I used this method, the man I gave a business card magnet to, commissioned me for an art job.
So the odds are pretty good that this will work for anyone.
Just try it.

Anothe tip is to use your computer effectively.
How?
Glad you asked...
I have an HP with Vista on it, and it also has
Movie Maker in the program.
What I've done is to compile all the pictures I've done over the last 25 years into a movie.
Then I added a soundtrack (Theme from Hawaii 5-0)
to make it race along.
Then I added a short video clip of the fountains at Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Put that all together, burn it to DVD, and you've got yourself a winner.
The cost?
About $1.00 for the DVD, and 33 cents for the cover.
You could even hand these out, burn some more,
and keep handing them out to prospects.
Be creative; be thinking all the time.

We've all seen time-lapse photography.
That's where the camera takes a single shot,
then a certain time later, takes another shot,
and another , and so on.
Then when the film runs, you can see the natural
progression of events, whether it's a building
going up, or a plant growing.
This has always fascinated me for some reason.
So, I thought, why couldn't I do this with my art.
That is, show the different stages of a picture as
it progresses right to the final finished product.
And that's what I'm doing with a picture I call
"Birth of a Portrait: The Swimmer".
It's a combination water color and colored pencil.
So what I do is to scan each stage of the picture
on my computer.
It's time-consuming, but interesting to watch as
the picture evolves.
Plus you can add a sound track to it, something upbeat
and with a good rythm, so people don't fall asleep
watching it.
Then you could play the DVD showing the evolution
of the picture at an art display along with your
regular art pieces , or give it away
to a prospect.
Try it; be creative!

Another tip, if you're really creative.
Compose your own soundtrack on your computer to go
along with your art presentation on a DVD.
If you sing well or play an instrument, music and art would go well together.
I haven't seen too many artists who are also singers, or singers who are also artists.
So this might be a stretch for some or most people.
But if you can do both, you can even take bookings with church groups, organizations, fundraisers, etc. that could use your skills to promote their cause, as well as yours.
There are probably other ways to promote your art, and I'll keep posting them here as they come to me.

Another tip I'd recommend is to think about prominent people in your hometown.
We have several people who are on the national stage from St. Catharines.
Walter Ostanek, the Polka King, has won 4 Grammies and has achieved fame world-wide.
Ron Sexsmith, the singer-songwriter, also lives in this area.
The men who created Trivial Pursuit also live in this area.
What am I driving at?
Just ask these people if you could draw their portrait for free, then when and if they consent, post that portrait on your webpage.
You could even have a link to the celebrity's page to generate more interest.

As of today, Nov. 13/08, our city of St. Catharines has put up on banners across the downtown the pictures of local and international celebrities to showcase our city.
Just as I mentioned above, except they're doing it within the city, where I can feature celebrities on my website.
Great idea, though.
What else can we think up??
Who else could you draw?
Expand your sphere; on the national stage there are many prominent Canadians. Celine Dion, David Foster, Howie Mandel, Avril Lavigne; the list goes on and on.
Write to prominent people and ask if you could draw them, and then give them the original while you keep a copy for your files, plus one on your webpage.
People like celebrities and when they see portraits of them that you drew, they'll remember you.
You may even get a write-up in your local newspaper.
I haven't tried this method yet, but it should work. Just haven't had the time to do it.

Now you could be among the fortunate
few who will soon have their lives changed forever. iCashCamp is

While I'm drawing, I don't like prank phone calls.
Read on...
If you've ever received prank calls, you know how annoying
they can be. Sometimes it will be a kid who is just making
a corny joke, but there can also be lewd or offensive calls
as well. These can be a real pain in the behind. When you call
the police to report them, there isn't much that they can do
unless you receive the calls one after another for days at a time.

Another problem you might have is that the caller is on a cell
phone. It is difficult to find out who the owner of the cell
phone is if the number is unlisted. However, there are many
different resources that will allow you to search for a number
and then obtain records for the number. This includes the
caller's name, address, and other important information. With
this information, you are able to get the police to do something.
At the very least, you can scare the caller by addressing them by their name.

Prank callers are one of the most annoying guys in the world.
However, if you let them know that it bothers you, they will
call even more. Rather than allowing them the satisfaction, see
if their number shows up on your caller ID or call tracing option.
A lot of cell phones will show up with just the number and no
name or other information. This is great, because with that
number, you can visit a reverse cell phone search site.

Visit:

http://loveit.procash7.hop.clickbank.net

These sites are very easy to use, and all you have to do is type
in the phone number of the prank caller. Within seconds you can
find out who owns the cell phone, what their name and address is
and other things. If you think the caller means serious business
and isn't just playing around, then you need to take it very seriously as well.

Through some of these sites, you are able to use the information you
obtained from the reverse cell phone search and then access their
federal court records. This also contains arrest records, and whether or not they have been charged with a felony or misdemeanor. This is important if you feel scared by the prank caller. The more information you have to give to your local police, the better. If there are criminal records that show up on your prank caller, you will likely prompt the police to act on your behalf and quickly. With the things that policemen have to deal with daily, prank calls aren't normally high on the list. However, if they feel that you may be in danger, you can be sure that they will get their butts moving to find your prank caller.

If you ever feel that a prank caller is more than just that, you
need to immediately look up the number through one of these sites.
They provide you with a ton of useful information that may get you
some attention from the police. Even if the prank caller is just being
annoying to get a laugh, these sites are useful. When you have their
personal information, and you let them know it, chances are they will stop calling you.

Unlisted Cell Phone Number? Not Anymore!

On a daily basis, people are plagued by all sorts of unsolicited
calls. They are an annoyance, and most of the time, with caller ID,
we can find out who is calling us. With a telemarketer, sometimes if
we tell them that we're not interested, they will stop calling. We
have the option to ignore their calls, but that might not stop the
calls. Usually, you can tell who is calling because of caller ID.
This has helped many people with harassment calls and telemarketing
calls. Unfortunately, people can get away with making harassing calls
simply by using their cell phones.

Many people choose to get cell phones because they are unlisted.
This is great for those people who don't want to be plagued by
telemarketers, because normally, those types of calls don't come
through on cell phones due to the unlisted status. However, it's
not so great for the people that are called by telemarketers or others
who are using the cell phones. We may get the number of the phone, but
we have no idea who the person is, or what company they are working for.
Often times, it is possible for a stalker, harasser, or someone else to
make repeated calls to your home because they think there is no way for
you to trace the number back to them.

Due to the vast benefits of the internet today, you don't have to
deal with this anymore. You are able to find out exactly who is
calling from that cell phone number. All you have to do on these
sites is enter the number and the information will come right back
to you. This is so important to many people who deal with these kinds
of phone calls daily. If it's a telemarketer, you're able to deal
specifically with the company to stop the calls, and if it's a
stalker or someone that is harassing you, you are able to handle it in a number of ways.

By entering the cell phone number, you can get the name and physical
address of the person who has been calling you. By providing the
police with this information and filing a report, you can stop the
calls. You can also take the next step in making sure that the calls
don't escalate to something else. There are many people who have been
the victim of calls like this only to end up being the victim of physical
violence from stalkers and other harassing people. Take harassing calls
seriously and make sure that they are reported to the proper authorities.
Your safety and well being is extremely important, and although you might
think these calls are placed just to get a rise out of you, the caller may
have a completely different idea!

You can receive access to the caller's name, address, and also their
background. Find out if they have a criminal past, with court records,
criminal arrests, records and even warrants. This information is vital
when given to the police, because if there is a criminal record, the calls
will take a higher priority. Keep yourself safe and protect yourself. Whether
it's annoying calls from a telemarketer who thinks he or she is being clever
on their cell phone, or someone who might have terrible things in mind, you
can stop them. Don't allow these calls to take over your life when you can
do something about them.

Have you thought about getting into tattoos?

For people who love Harley motorcycles and are thinking of getting a tattoo, Harley Davidson tattoos offer a great look and a way to show your love of motorcycles. You can get the Harley logo, various representations of motorcycles, or various other artistic rendering. Some tattoos have the Harley name with a rose or the logo with flames coming from the sides.

Tattoos have long been used around the world for beauty, identification, cosmetics, and spiritual reasons. They are made by inserting pigment into the skin. There is evidence that tattooing has been around since Neolithic times. They have served a variety of purposes since then depending on the culture and time period.

In recent years, tattoos have become more popular in North America, Europe, and Japan. Increasingly, people trained in the fine arts have been entering the industry, bringing unique designs to tattoo shops around the world.

Temporary tattoos, including ones with a Harley design, have also increased in popularity. Some temporary tattoos last for several months or years. Others fade or wash out more quickly in a matter of days. These types of tattoos are fun for younger individuals, those who aren't sure they want the permanence of a regular tattoo, or for special events.

Finding a tattoo pattern for your new tattoo can be challenging or you may already have an idea of what you want, making the task much easier. Generally, deciding on what you want tattooed and where you're going to place it can take longer than actually finding a tattoo you like. You can search many sites online for design ideas. Look under topics like Harley Davidson tattoos, motorcycle tattoos, or biker tattoos and you'll find many designs on this theme.

You may find that you like design elements from a particular tattoo but want the overall appearance to be slightly different. In this case, talk to a tattoo artist who may be able to customize the look for you. For example, maybe you love the Harley Davidson logo but want to have flames or flowers swirling around it. A tattoo artist may be able to create the look you want.

You want to be sure that you love the final design since you'll have a permanent reminder of it. Take your time in deciding on the tattoo design that you want and look through as many examples of the theme you want as you can find for ideas.

Harley Davidson tattoos make a great choice for those who embrace the biking culture or who own their own Harley. Think about the instant recognition that the logo gets, showing off your own bike, or creating a one of a kind look that incorporates the logo or other related items. Once you've got it, show it off at tattoo contests during events like the Harley Rendezvous Classic or Sturgis Bike Rally.

Once you've gotten all the Harley Davidson apparel you need some Harley Davidson tattoos to show your pride. Visit Motorcycle Accessories Pro to find out which design may be right for you.

The eyes have it!

How to draw eyes.

People have told me that they like the way I draw eyes of my subjects.
How do I do it? Simply observation.
First, draw in pencil (#2) the round iris. Then in the center, draw the pupil, but leave a bit of white paper in the upper part to look like light hitting the iris.
Draw a large pupil, then draw lines radiating from the pupil to the outer part of the eye.
I usually draw this up close to get a good likeness.
Draw the inner part of the tear duct, color it a flesh color. Then add eyelashes to the top of the eyelid with a few on the bottom. As you gain experience, this will all become 2nd nature.
And one last thing...keep on practicing constantly.
One thing you can count on...if the eyes of your subject look correct, the rest of the picture will probably look good, too.
I usually draw in colored pencil. Why?
Because, when I started back in the 60's (The Stone Age to some of you), oil paints had to be thinned with turpentine, which had a bad odor.
Whereas, colored pencils have no odor and it's possible to get great details with pencils.
This was even before acrylic paints; I tried them for a while but they dried too fast.
I do use them occasionally to give a watercolor effect, though.

Meet with other artists.

This is one of the best ways to expand your knowledge and study other's work.
I found a cool site at:

http://www.meetup.com

You can find almost any interest here and people with similar interests.
Another way is to go to art galleries with some artist friends, to study the Great Masters.
One idea I've seen recently is to form a club of artists, but you can charge a fee per month to access the club's features.
It's possible to earn a six-figure income using this club because you can expand your reach so much farther using the Internet.
Whereas, if you only sell your work to people locally for , say, $100, then you have to find other customers to pay for your art.

You'll be glad you did.

If you're an artist, you can sell more than just in your local town.
With this Artist's Market book, you can find the right buyer for your
artwork.
This saves you time and money. I've seen this book advertised for as much
as $30.00, but through Amazon.com, you can buy it for a big discount.
Or you can give it to a friend who is interested in art as a Christmas
gift, Birthday present, Graduation gift, etc.
I first read this book way back in 1980, and it was a real eye-opener.
I saw all the markets for my art in one book.
Now in the 21st Century, everything has changed with the advent of computers.
Now, you'll need to know all about software programs such as Pagemaker,
Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Whew!
It just boggles the mind as to how much an artist must learn in order to
stay competitive these days.
