What's With Andy Warhol and High Heel Shoes?

Andy Warhol's Shoe Illustrations

Andy Warhol and his famous shoe artwork... He had an obsession with high heel shoes that's for sure, although he drew all kinds of shoes including boots. Have you ever seen his posters with shoes? In 1949, Warhol graduated from the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (it is now called Carnegie Mellon University). Following his graduation, he decided to move to New York City to start working in magazine illustration and advertising. His biggest dream was to be in a big city where he would be able to meet celebrities and famous artists. He was obsessed with becoming rich and famous, maybe because of the tough childhood he had, coming from a poor family and growing up without a father. (His father had died when Andy was 13 years old). During the 1950s, he started working on ink drawings of shoes for advertisement purposes. These illustrations are the early works of his signature pop art technique. These were done before he had started painting Campbell's soup cans or Coca Cola bottles or his celebrity artwork.

How much do you know about Andy Warhol?

Warhol was great at drawing simple things but making them look so appealing. Even if you hate high heel shoes and what they stand for socially, you can't help but want a pair of them. This was Andy's talent. You can feel his desire of being known, being rich through his work of art.

Fancy prints on a solid background, buckles, ribbons, straps... it feels as if you are looking at a queen's shoe collection. Each of them say something, each of them have their own unique personality. Surely when he said "My shoe is your shoe" he meant more than just that.

It was a cultural and social statement, much like when he was drawing Coca Cola bottles. He said that no matter how rich and how poor you are, there is only one kind of Coca Cola, and the president drinks the same thing as you. It is the same bottle, same taste. With his shoe illustrations he brought out lower class' envy for luxury and money.

Maybe an Andy Warhol painting sells for 100 million dollars today but back then, he gave away most of his paintings, actually including these shoe series. He had done this a lot in the beginning of his career in hopes of making friends from higher classes.

I didn't know this. Interesting. I have a weakness for clogs, LOL, maybe I should photograph my clog collection--not nearly as graceful and delicate as high heels--I know.
