Zines are generally self-published works with a narrow, focused interest. The altered art world has embraced the zine concept, and there are dozens of small publications dedicated to this type of artwork.

Zines are presented in a variety of formats. They can be as simple as handprinted words and drawings that have been photocopied, or as complex as a full-blown magazine. Some altered art zines offer original artwork extras, ephemera, or images that can be used in your own artwork. Increasingly, zines include digital publications, including small ebooks, CDs and issues offered as downloadable .pdf files.
